Still fairly new at this powder painting. What am I doing wrong? I heat the jigs then dip in the paint and it’s like the first dip doesn’t take and I have to re-dip them to get coverage, then it’s like they all have to much paint. I’m guessing it’s a heat issue. :dono
Boy powder painting is messy, it’s quicker but makes bigger mess then fingernail polish.
Try using more heat and just one quick flicker in the powder. Try not to dunk it or push it in, rather jingle it about. If the head is hot enough there should be no double dip necessary.
Are you using a fluid bed?
Looks like more heat is needed and less dipping. Make sure your jig heads are clean also.
Did you cast the heads or buy them?
Try wiping with alcohol or acetone before heating dipping.

Yes I’m using a fluid bed. Yes I purchased them. I was wondering if something was on them. I will try cleaning and more heat before dipping next time
Not sure if this is cause, but even if you have a fluid bed. After doing a few jig it's possible to pack the powder down. Stirring the powder to loosen up the paint will help.
Dave when people pour their heads they will coat the mold with talc or baby powder. I think that causes the pits your are seeing.
I’m gonna try cleaning them first next time. I’m thinking this is probably the culprit. I’ve played with the heat, even melted them....lol. Thanks
Dave, I know you’re no rookie, but for the heat I use it like this. I hold the hook iby the shank and start to count, usually to 4, then flip and do the same thing on the other side. By this time I can feel the heat coming up the shank of the hook and I grab them in a pair of bent tip, spring loaded needle nose pliers and go thru the paint. That’s usually enough heat for enough paint to bond, then I reheat and glaze the paint, usually a 2 count, then set them aside for the oven. Usually does the job for me, and under 1/32 heats faster and the heat in the shank tells you when to quit.
If you figure it out let me know. I bought some jigs and when I painted them did the same thing in the same color. I posted here and tried everything that was suggested. No help. Stir paint more heat less heat clean head with alcohol no help lol I gave up. Good luck I hope you figure it out.

depending on the alloys used as filler with lead from manufacturer does not lend itself to coating very well either. Plus ask the person you got them from to find out if they are pretreating their mold.
What is your heat source?
Pink and orange can pit like that when using too much air. One way to see if it is fluid bed is try not using it. Simply shake a powder paint jar to get fluffed then dip hot head in it. If it doesn’t pit then it’s the fluid bed. That green definitely too much paint. It takes practice. You should’ve seen some of my 1st heads I painted.
Also some colors require you dip longer than others while some don’t. You should be able to heat, dip and I like to quick swirl one or a couple times depending on color and then pull out and be shiny. Some paints do better with a little clear added or you can simply clear dip after initial color. But then some don’t like clear to be added like your disco colors and definitely don’t add clear or dip in clear with chrome.
Lots of good suggestions and ideas. I will work on them next chance I get. I’m using an alcohol lamp as heat source.
Purple and chartreuse are really heavy colors, adding clear will thin them some. I use a heat gun so I'm no help with an alcohol lamp but seems not enough heat looking at the pictures. Swish the heads in white vinagar rinse and wipe clean, let totally dry then try powdering again.
Honestly I've had some of the same trouble and it seems to be worst with spincast heads

I agree with the green comment, it is definitely my toughest color to get correct, very heavy pigment.
Been using a alcohol burner for many years and I think you are over heating your heads. On a 1/32 I give a count of 1000-1 flip 1000-2 dip the head and on 1/16 a count of 1000-1 flip 1000-2 flip 1000-3 flip 1000-4 dip. Chartreuse is very heat sensitive and I only do a count of 3 for the heating process.
try swirling the heads in the powder instead of just dipping them in the paint.
Exactly if using fluid bed. Like I stated I swirl mine one or a few times depending on color. If just dipping in jar container then just a quick dip. You have to figure with a fluid bed, air is introduced therefor the paint isn’t as dense.Quote:

No matter what I always add some clear to any powder paint, some colors are just really thick! Brown, black and purple have always been the worst for me.
With a fluid bed you also may not be getting enough air to roil the powder.
I tried some the other day without the fluid beds and thought they looked good until I baked them. Even though I followed the directions on the powder paint I’m pretty sure it was to hot.... it melted the glitter. Some colors still had the dimples. So from that test I eliminated the fluid bed as culprit. Next test I will clean jigs first and probably add a teaspoon of clear to the colors and see what results I get from that. Just trying to eliminate the problem but would like to know what it is by only changing one thing at a time.

I bake my jigs 320 for 20 minutes. Don't add clear to disco colors. Back when I added clear to my colors I did a 50/50 ratio. So 2oz color to 2oz clear. I'd start with a 75/25 ratio 1st though then work your way up. Also only add clear to those colors giving you problems with the exception of disco colors as I stated. Most colors won't need clear. Black and orange are the only two colors that really give me fits at times. Once I dip in clear though it takes away blemishes. I might need to add a little clear myself.
Going to get an oven thermometer to see what my toaster is actually doing. I’m almost scared to double dip in clear, I already have trouble with to much paint sometimes. I’m going to keep working on it and see what works for me. I will figure it out..... eventually :Rofl
also eventually want to get that crinkle coat as second coat figured out. It produces awesome looking jigs. Then the swirl look.
