First year chasing speck and loving it. Majority of my speck have been slap full of grass shrimp. My question is for those of yall that have used grass shrimp for bait, how did you go about using them? Multiple on a hook? Slip bobber? Had good luck using them?

I used them up north near the ocean when fishing for trout,,,they worked crazy good for trout,,, zi used to just use multiple shrimp on a small hook and Carolina rig setup,,,when the trout hit it,they wouldn’t feel resistance and the line would start peeling out I knew I had a fish,,, didn’t usually take long with grass shrimp,,they loved them,,,, I’d check with state laws first to see if it’s legal though,,,,some guys even use dead grass shrimp,,,. Mine were readily available via the local marina,,, just swiped the grass along side of the docks and filled a bucket quick,,,
There were several threads on here about salting the tiny salad shrimp, drying them, cutting them into small pieces and using them like crappie nibbles on jigs or just by themselves.
Also, one post mentioned using the tiny little guys that come in cans, located in the Vienna weenie section of your grocery mart.

Lots of guys use around here, but first, Welcome from Debary. Many ways to use em, but you gotta have the right net. Small mesh and up into the weeds, you’ll learn which weeds are best as you do it more. I’ve been taken to school by a guy using grass shrimp after I had fished where he was. Get the net and a bucket and start your way around the learning curve.
They work best live I found,,,because when they startakickin. Drives fish crazy
I fished them a lot as a kid on Okeechobee. We always just used one on a hook under a float and small split shot. The same rig we fished minnows on.
I wish I could put a mayfly on a hook round here. Probably work just as well
Fuzzy,,,, did you catch a lot of crappie with them?
We used baby eels on fish as well,,, mostly stripes liked those,,,nothin better then free bait

Takeum, we did but to be honest we always caught the shrimp in hyacinth roots or scooping a net in shallow grass but would fish them in deep water while drowning minnows.
When the specs were feeding on shrimp, in the places the shrimp live, I always felt like I could catch just as many as I wanted on jigs. I always loved fishing hyacinth mats by dropping a jig through any hole I could find and jigging the bait very close to the surface. The key was to keep it at the same level or a few millimeters below the roots which housed the gass shrimp.
an article i read said around 80% of a mature black crappie's diet was one of the large number of different kinds of freshwater shrimp.
i met a biologist at one lake ketchn bluegill to identify how many varieties of shrimp lived in that lake .
i had no idea there were so many different species of them .
thats just hear in Texas , i bet way far east of here the numbers of species is larger .
Sk and I watch them at night under marina lights with crappie taking them off the surface .
never used them for bait but i hear tell they work quite well .
:welcome321Specn'....Grass shrimp in Florida is kinda a generational pass-down thing & yes have heard plenty of quick limit stories using them on crappie...as mentioned in another post would image they work best near shore/source vs open water, think a simple hook, split shot, & bobber...start w/1 on hook & experiment w/multiple to see how they react...a follow up post w/results would be interesting...
Fish also love Baby crawfish, the kind you find on side of road in a ditch.Quote:

matter of fact we set out a trotline across a creek with 25 hooks and crawdads one spring back when ...and...
came back to line full of large sandbass on it ....:yikes
