Excellent point. Sun screen and protection. Because cancer is a low down rotten thief, I detest it.
Had one removed from temple last year . And I wear hats when I’m outdoors.
Brother had a big one removed from his ear .
Until the last few years I wore a ball cap . Now I wear a full brim when I’m fishing . And long sleeve shirts

Yep, good hat, sunscreen, long sleeve fishing shirt, and last year I started wearing fingerless fishing gloves. The gloves work well and don’t interfere at all with handling the reel. Protection is a must, wish I had started earlier.

Don't forget the buff. Hats, etc. protect you from sun's rays from above but don't protect you from sun bouncing off the water.

Coached 32 yrs. (football /baseball ) worked as a Boat patrol ranger at Enid 10 yrs . And like most spent all my off time fishing when the fields were mowed and my yard as well . had one removed from the top of my left ear..Dermatologist told me most of them removed from a ear is on the left side..She said drivers side is of suspect..I blame it mostly on 65 years of golf and fishing..Wide brim hats now outside...
Had one removed from my nose a few years ago. They took skin from behind my ear to patch the hole left on my nose.

When the surgeon first looked at mine, she said she would cut an ellipse and just stitch it closed. Since the first consult my BCC has gotten bigger. I'm hoping that she can cut it out and close it without giving me two incisions to worry about. Surgery scheduled for February 5th. Also being on two different blood-thinners doesn't help.Quote:

Before I started fishing I used to play golf. I still see some of my ole golf buddy's from time to time. It's amazing to see the hand that they wore the golf on...no freckles no sun spots and the skin is smooth and white. Took me a while fishing but I managed to make my hands match.bangs head.

A friend who always wore a hat, used sunscreen and ate healthy died a year ago from a melanoma on his head. 2 months from discovery to the funeral.

Today I had 65 stitches removed from my scalp by the plastic surgeon who had to rebuild the damage done when the carcinoma was cut out. My cancer turned out to be a Merkel Cell type, much more aggressive than "normal" skin cancer.

Wow, thanks for posting this. I have had some non aggressive skin cancers removed from my back and flank years ago. I don’t wear short sleeves or shorts anymore plus I always have a hat on and face covering while on in the boat. Best of luck and prayers for a complete recovery!

Good posts, guys. I rescheduled awhile back because of Covid, but my yearly checkup isn’t too far away. Yea, cancer is an equal opportunity enemy. Wear a hat and all the other items you have to protect yourself!

I remember the good old days fishing in the 70's wearing bib overalls and no shirt but always wore a hat. Lot's of burning and peeling back then. We do pay the price as we get older. I found out yesterday that I have a small basal cell on my right arm which will be removed in a couple weeks. These can show up anywhere even if area is covered. Anything that doesn't look normal should be checked, it never hurts to ask and get it checked out.
