Jig Racks needed if you use fluid beds?

I am going to purchase a fluid bed setup from TJ Tackle to apply powder paint. I am planning to get the dual 2" setup, and enough cups that I'll just store my powder paint in them.

I will be purchasing a cheap toaster oven to preheat jigs, and to cure them afterwards. Any recommendations on a model?

Are the jig stands that TJ Tackle sells(pictured above) useful during the curing process if you use fluid beds? I could see them being very handy if you apply too much powder. Is this a non-issue with fluid beds?

At this point in the game, it would be silly to not purchase a $5 item that results in a better final product, so it's not a financial issue. I will likely purchase at least 8-10 of these if they make sense.

I purchased 3 but haven’t used them yet. I noticed I was getting the drip effect when hanging the jigs in the toaster some. Using these will eliminate that causing any extra to go down the shank and not to the tip. I do small batches and can rotate so 3 should be all I need. I use cheap dollar store racks for hanging them after painting and only will use the clamps when baking.

Never used these but I think it would be more fuss than I want. I just dip and hang. And yes I wind up with poot heads because of to much paint once in a while. Attachment 392677 Let us know how you do with them.

I just got a dual fluid bed from TJ's and didn't order the racks but should have now I will be ordering them I think it will make it easier to load them in the oven and I believe I will be able to get more in there.

I went ahead and placed an order from TJ and got the racks as well.

Hopefully, I'll have some pictures posted before long of the whole process and some jigs.

i made some with heat resistant silicone sheet, paper clips, and aluminum angle from lowes a seem to work good but a little advice dont get the one with a sticky back the glue will run

I can get a hundred or so on the rack that goes in my oven. Paint em, rack em, push em in the oven, done. There for me so if I get a pouty head, that's probably the one I catch the most fish on, lose it, and don't have another one to replace it with. :Doh:

Regarding a toaster over, get the one they've got at the thrift store. That's the best model for curing jigs.... Mine cost less than $4 and it's cured lots of jigs.

I guess I'm not understanding how you're going to preheat them in the toaster oven and them stay warm while dipping in the fluid bed.... Do you paint more than one or two at a time? Seems to me that they'd cool off too quick for the paint to stick.

I occasionally get a Pinocchio jig. I have found the best way to eliminate that is to warm the jig to the correct temp, so that the powder sticks to it, but doesn't melt. They have a dull appearance, until you bake them, when that occurs. It just takes trial and error to figure out what the correct amount of time is. Depends on the size of the head. When I do get a long nosed jig, I take a box cutter and cut the nose on, and re-bake the head on the next oven load. That smooths out the bump.

I use a propane torch to heat my jigs. I hold the eye of the hook with needle nose pliers and dip them. That keeps the eye of the hook from being full of paint.

I cut the cross "wires" off the rack for my oven and welded a piece of expanded metal to the rack. I can hang around 100 jigs on the rack and they can't slide together and touch because of the X's on the expanded metal. This system works well for me.

I have a couple 6" jig racks, wish I would have ordered more. They keep ya from getting cone heads. With a fluid bed, its a lot easier to get the right amount of paint on the jig versus just dipping in the jar. The only issue I have with hanging jigs is if I do multicolor jigs, thats when I like the jig rack.

About a 5000 watt I think. LOL It’s a Quisenart toaster oven and I called it my easy bake oven one time and it sorta stuck. I keep all my jig making stuff at our shop so that’s now what all the guys call it.

Love it, amazing how items get a tag name. Been there done that. My boat has been miss piggy to my buddies and I as it's so heavy.

did u get the sheeting at lows also?

Litewirehooker, how do you keep the jigs from sliding around and touching? I tried using the rack in my toaster oven but I had too much trouble keeping the jigs apart. Admittedly I'm impatient so that's a factor too.

That rack was kinda old when I started using it many years ago. It’s not slick....guess that the reason they stay in place. I pick up by the center of rack to place in oven. Never had any problems with hooks sliding.....got to keep level when placing in oven. I bake after dotting the eyes.....every once in a while 2 will get together but it’s not a problem and usually my fault for trying to bake too many at one time.
