Never tied one but I like the idea. Those fry are really hard to filet.
Well that is what I got the Silver and Black Crystal for! Once that large Crystal is wet it lays back and makes a nice body so then you would have a body of silver and black.

I cleaned some crappie about 6 weeks ago that had crappie in their belly a little smaller than the one in your picture
Let's see your best impression.
I know I read that crappie are cannibalistic. One of the lake I fish does not have any bait fish. So I'm guessing they eat their own. Also any other fry from other species of fish after the hatch.
Been around biologists a long time and they all say gamefish will eat anything they catch that fits in their mouth.
That’s the same saying I’ve heard my whole life as well.
We need to not throw our old twister tails and tube bodies in the water when we are done with them. Fish simply can't digest them and depending on the size of the predator they can not extract plastic then they die.

This may get the job done, might need a little work but the UV in the tail is spot on for what you see in a baby crappie. It looks blue in the picture but is purplish to the eye.
Here is my first stab. I dont think the picture does it justice.

Now that’s cool stuff,,,,how’s it done Capt?
Thanks just started a making/tying jigs a few weeks ago. I find it hard to make what I see in my head.
UV resin, sharpie markers, faux fir, flash
Tail is fake fur, body is flash then started building body up with uv resin. Started coloring with sharpie markers, more uv resin. The glo is uv sharpie under the resin. Eyes are UV resin with gold tensil with a sharpie dot.
Very very cool. Sounds like it took some time to make. I’d have a hard time throwing it in a brush pile....lol. Haven’t seen a whole lot done for jigs using resin. I had thought about trying some but just never have. A++ job! Outstanding representation!
Okay these ties are from a long time back and I may do them a little different now, but here it is, my original Baby Crappie Jigs.

Now also realize when this chenille gets wet it will lay back showing the shiny Silver and Black.

What the chenille looks like, but the pic is not as good.

Surprisingly they are quick. Maybe 7 min for the first one.. I bet it could get under 5min to make more. Technique is to put a large drop of resin toward the head of jig. Then spin the jig on the rotary vise. Use a toothpick to bring the resin back to the tail. Hit with uv light light and repeat.
I use the variegated feathers for the barred look. This jig does not look much like a crappie fry but I may try again. This is a jig from my box, not just now tied.Attachment 392197

Thought I would give this another try. I like the experiment of it. Got it wet so you could see the flash better.
My contribution.Attachment 392203
You guys are tying some knockouts, really good stuff. Used to use a gray and black with some flash in the tail that did well, maybe that’s what the crappie saw.
Here are some I had from previous post. I guess any shad baitfish colors would work.

Gray ghost is a very popular jig.
all of these are crazy good! Fish don't take the time to see what species is in front of them! they see a flash, ID food and BOOM. it's in their gullet!
All of those are just excellent but If I took the time to make one it would be too pretty for me to use! LOL. It's like those $15 crankbaits I got as prizes at fishing shows which look so realistic but I can't ever put it on a line and toss it as I know i would get hung up on first cast!
I do make so small fry jigs. They range from 1/32 to 1/16 once and are my go to jigs when fishing gets tough.
They produce best during the hard water season and cold water. I seems that all fish eat fry.
I use fine rubber hackle or fur for tail material and all some glitter to the bodies. Attachment 392254
Those are cool I really like them. :ThumbsUp
hdhntr , I used to be the same way bout losing lures, but they are of zero use in storage. Give them a shot of being productive.
I've been tying crappie jigs for over 25 years and the very best bluegill or crappie fry imitation I've used is mallard drake flank feathers with gadwall feathers at #2. The barring on these feathers are fantastic and tying a duck feather jig only takes a couple minutes. I've caught 10's of thousands of crappie, bluegill and bass using duck feather jigs since I started making them.

Attachment 392549Attachment 392550Attachment 392551Attachment 392552Attachment 392552Attachment 392553 Here are some I made yesterday. Crappie pics are the last crappie of 2020 and first crappie of 2021. Both were caught using duck feather jigs. Water is cold here, skim ice on 90% of this shallow lake. Very slow steady retrieve with the jig a foot under a weighted float was only way I could get bit.
Pretty jigs!
Those are nice, the crappie too!
Not seen it mentioned but got wondering if crappie fry glow under UV.
Not seen it mentioned but got wondering if crappie fry glow under UV or any fry they eat.
I’ve long admired your work Jim. It’s the standard I try to achieve when I drag out the feathers. I have a couple in my box always. One question, do you dye your own feathers? Those in the last pic are real cool, some palmered?
