Finally fired up the Helix ten today. I fiddled with the buttons an am comfortable with them.
The maps installed don't have much info about my area here in Big Sandy River, Tn area.
So, what are my options for this area?

Helix doesn't come with detailed maps. Those are another $125 and are sold by region. Check out their site to confirm your lake or river. That helix is a nice finder! Enjoy it and be patient.
I am the epitome of patient. My urologist said so.
Here is a Navionics Chartviewer Web App shot at where it enters the river.

I have a couple of Helix units and have a Lakemaster card for them. It's a far superior map to the HB Basemap. I watched a video last night where a guy is using the HB Fish Smart app on his phone. IIRC you can buy individual lake maps through the app and directly download them onto the unit. I'd have to watch the video again to be sure, but I think that's correct. I remember for sure that you can update your units through the app, via Bluetooth connection without having to use an SD card. That will definitely be a better way to update them.
If you fish the same body of water all the time, buying the individual lake map would be the way to go IMO. As big of a tinkerer as you are, you could just make your own map with Auto Chart live, and load it on the Zero Lines card. I plan to do some areas of my home lake that aren't mapped well. It's bad that I have all this technology and don't use it to it's fullest. I guess it's time to change that for me.
Lakemaster is the only way to go.
Make sure you check and see that it., covers where you want to fish.

I have both. Lakemaster all the way. Make sure it's for the area you are fishing.
I agree with Lakemaster.

I ordered Lakemaster Southeastern. V5, whatever that means. IT has Tn lakes best I can tell. I have 2 Helix 10s that came with the Jon boat. looks like I need 2 maps, 1 per unit since they don't share maps. I only ordered 1. Thought I would check it out first.
Won’t share maps. Will share waypoints if connect by Ethernet.

I like LakeMaster the best, but purchased a Navionics map to get Lake Blackshear in Ga. I have both in one unit.

V5 simply means that card is the 5th version of that specific regional card ...
All regions were not initiated in the same year ... and some regions are not updated every year - therefore the “V” number indicates version updates specific to that regional card ...

All the maps I have seen in my area at KY lake are just water colored WGS84. The mappers never visit our area. We are insignificant.
I would also recommend AutoChart. Your map will be better than any you'll find on a card. If you do decide to go with AutoChart, here is a great place to start learning. Camo has provided good instructions. There is also follow up questions on the second link,
