I was working on a CAT 750M yesterday with an elderly neighbor and it’s amazing how difficult it is just to perform basic maintenance. He and I were talking about cars from 30 years ago and how easy it was to work on them.
You get under the hood of some of this new stuff; short point A to point B; and "poof", $1,000. worth of electronics is gone. Not covered under warranty.
Shop rate in our area is about $90.00/hr. And it might be worth it.

I agree 90 bucks for the computerized mayhem under hoods nowadays is well worth it. I take my wife’s 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee into the shop for any maintenance, even routine, I won’t even change the oil. I work on my 2003 F250 Super Duty and GEO Tracker I rebuilt this summer and am willing to try any car I can find a Haynes or Chiltons manual for. I am getting ready to tear into my 1998 Big Bear 350 next.
Haven't touched a motor since 1985. Used to do everything except major repairs.
I remember the last V-8 flat head I rebuilt. It sure turned out purdy and ran better than new. I was proud of it. They were simple but grinding and seating valves were a bear. And finding a replacement for a cracked head was difficult as they were rare. Thats been a while back. Way back.
Saw this somewhere on the web. Something that you can see under the hood of older cars that you can't see on the new ones--- THE GROUND ! lol
