one thing i don't have for crappie fishing a long rod to try my hand at vert fishing. i currently have an UL shakespeare 5.6 ft micro series, a 6ft B&M speed shooter, and a 7ft daiwa presso light action, i want to try a longer rod this time, looking for some input on a 12' rod that is reasonable to see if i like it before i spend a ton of money on a rod,

My personal experience is that 12' rods are a bit out of balance. I've built rods for 20yrs and my preference is a good 9' rod with microwave or airwave guides(that eliminates the line flap) which allow much longer and accurate casts. Everybody to his own, just me sayin!

ps most video's i watch the fisherman are basically underhand casting, i appreciate your thoughts on max length of 9ft, but would i be better vert jigging as far away from the boat as possible

I have them from 8 ft to 13 ft. Depending on where and how you are fishing. Using 12-13 for live scope but if just sitting over brush pile or stake bed I prefer 10-11 ft. I’m high on 2 rods. 10 Duck commander double touch and 11ft Jenco Hypersense rear seat. Really light and really strong. I also have a Denali 11 ft regular seat that seems to be nice rod just haven’t used it much yet. Only 12 I have used is PST and it’s awful heavy. If looking for 12 ft Southern Crappie, ACC crappie six and Jenco all make nice rods
I like the sam heaton super sensitive 12' with the bottom seat...
i see jenko is offering free shipping till dec 1st, any comments on the 12ft cypress creek rod for 28 bucks, i see it says fiberglass, is it going to be heavy, i am trying to stay under 50 bucks

If you plan on holding them all day, get the jenko hypertense. Light but strong. Cypress creeks are good rods to use in holders.Quote:

Tuning the rod and reel balance makes the difference between holding weight and holding near nothing. My favorite is a SamHeaton 10’ rear reel seat with a metal framed reel. When reach becomes an issue I go to a 12’ BGJP just because I have 2 of them. I really only gain a foot because of the handle design, but the balance is very close to the Sam. I’d like to tell you that I’m gentle with these rods but nothing could be further from the truth. I beat on em when I get a thump and have had no quality issues. Good luck in your decision, and I have no experience with most of the others mentioned.
Academy will have their yearly closeout sales in a few months. Last year they had a selection of rods from BnM and other companies marked down to under $10. I picked up some 10'-13' BnM rods for $7-$10 each that normally retailed for $129-$149 each. You might wait until closeout time to shop for new rods.
I will be looking for a couple of 10 ft rods myself to replace the 2 that were "borrowed" from my boat at the slip this year and not returned.

I love longer rods as well, but not that long. My rods need to do double duty.....casting as well as vertical jigging and drifting. I find that the 9' SHSS fits this bill nicely. I have a few short rods as well, but when it comes to pure joy of the fight, it's hard to beat a long rod in my opinion.

B and M, and Sam Heaton 9 to 10 foot is great for jigging
Use all 10' and 11' now wouldn't even know what to do with a 5'6". Heck I even cast the long rods now. Don't' even have a bass rod under 7'2"........
10 ft B&M Duck Commander double touch paired with a Mr Crappie Solo and use the line that came with it. Run ya about $55 for the combo.

Well I needed to go a little longer too, to reach over some limbs to reach the ledges where the crappie are holding here in the Pearl River and already owned some of the Mighty Lite rods in 12ft but they are the green ones. While in the Flowood, MS BPS they had a new silver one with the green tip. For less than $50 it was a cheap try-me but except the length of the handle it just keeps put'em in the boat for me very well. They changed to power curve a bit. I had to hold it too far from my body due to handle length. I have my own line of rods, have built rods most of my life so I just cut off the handle leaving just enough to catch in a rod holder. After sanding a very slight radius in the EVA on the "new" end I took a razor to the drop removing a inch of the EVA at the Butt Cap. A few seconds over a bic lighter and the original CNC Aluminum Butt Cap slid right out. I had to reduce the taper size with a dremel tool so it would fit the butt of the rod again. I epoxied it in and have not looked back. Did the same to a 14ft BGJP too. Both are my go to extra reach poles. The BPS Rod now has a duplicate, I fish them both at the same time very comfortable. BPS has free shipping at $50.
been looking at 2 rods, any thoughts on one vs the other, one is the b&M duck commander double touch around 40 bucks or the Buck's best ultra lite with bottom seat and touch system model BBULBS12 around 60 bucks

I have a couple of 10' Cypress creek glass composite rods and on order 3 10' ACC GS10M Carbon fiber rods and will add Kastking Centron 500 reels.
