i have been using mr crappie 4 lb test for a few months now, every now and then when i open my bail this stuff springs out like crazy out of the spool, been thinking if trying Vicious line, i notice here alot of fisherman like it, question is are they using the braid or regular mono or flurocarbon, trying to get away from springing coils when i open my bail, looking for something limper.

Before you switch brands and spend money on this issue, I would try not filling the spool too full. It's been my experience that when I try to get a full spool I have the same kind of issues.
Try leaving a little room by filling the spool to within 1/8 in of the lip on the spool. This can vary as all reels are not the same size. It works for me. Worth a try.
Yep it sounds like you have to much line on your spool. Take about 15 yards off and you should be good.
How are you spooling the line on the reel? It can be done wrong.
I have been having problems with my line getting twisted up. I place spool Trilene XL on floor, label side up. I then let the line uncoil off the spool as I reel the Pflueger President 25s. I put right at 100 yds of line in. I fishd Mon afternoon 4 1/2 hrs and kine was so kinked up I will respool before next fishing trip. Something is definately haywire???
cooler weather amplifies some of these issues on mono , how it was spooled the others is my guess .
the jump off the spool is almost for sure to much line on the spool ....1/8 below the face of the spool is full .
how to spool the line on a rewind is like what is your favorite ...ford or chevy ,,,,:Rofl
if it acts dumb spooling it up one way or the other..... reverse the spool .
and sometimes being that there are 4 possibilities on how to spool it ,
you might need to try everyone of them before you get it right .
Label side up doesn't work for all reels. It depends upon which way the bail turns. The line should come off the spool in the same direction as the bail is turning. That will minimize your problem. However as has been said, cold weather and mono don't mix well. You might want to consider a braid.
When putting line on a reel put on a couple feet and then move the reel closer to the spool. if the line twists you should turn the spool over and check again. it should not twist.
When I spool up I usually do it on the boat. After filling up my spool I pay the line out into the water until all the line is out then drag it a couple of minutes to allow the twist to come out. Then I just reel it back in keeping tension on the line. I have done the same thing off the boat using a large grassy area. When your line starts kinking up again, and it eventually will, just repeat the process.
I can see colder temps, did not think of that at the time, water temp was 48 deg and air temp around 65, someone was saying attach line to an secured object and back up about 40 yds or so and stretch and release tension a few times helps, any thoughts

Try switching to braid. I won't go back to mono.
Otherwise try soaking your entire new line in water for a day before you spool it up. Or as another mentioned at the lake cast it out and use your troller to unspool the entire reel and then reel in the wet line.

That was me, Chet .... I use that method to remove the coils set in the line when the reel hasn't been used for awhile. And when you cut the line loose from the secured object, walk back to the reel and reel the line back thru the grass while applying moderate finger/thumb pressure to the line as it goes on the reel. That takes any twist out of the line and packs the line tight on your reel spool, which helps stop any loops or loose coils from getting overwrapped (another factor in kinked line and "birdnests" during a cast).Quote:

This is true. I had one case for whatever reason with Stren Crappie where I had to flip the spool label down to get the line coming off in the same direction as the bail turn. Normally label up always works. The reel was the same as before so it was the way the line was spooled at the factory(?) You have to check, and not filling up the whole reel spool is important as well.Quote:

Keep a lot of tension even if I have to add cardboard pieces to "shim" the spools in the box to keep them tight against each other. I have no idea as to the manufacturer's process of applying the label so I just go with clockwise facing me. I don't think clockwise is critical but the tension is.
Spool the line on the reel with tension and don't overfill. Works for me. As fishermen/women we tend to over think stuff.

I always put it on wrong. I've got skills. I can use identical reels and spool one with label up and one with label down, leave 1/8" of spool showing, close the bail by hand etc. And BOTH of mine will be wrong. Been doing it this way for years.

Truthfully, I do get it wrong a lot. But it does get worse when casting a lot. Every so often, stop casting. Let the jig hang in the air and watch it spin.......trying to unwind itself. Allow it to untwist, then open the bail and let the jig go to the bottom. Wind up again and see if jig still wants to spin.
so let me ask, i am currently using my crappie 4lb test on all 3 of my light crappie set ups. i hear guys casting 1/32 oz baits, i cannot do it period, maybe 15 feet, if i were to try another line, will i get better distance with 2lb mr crappie or some other brand of mono or 4lb braid,Quote:

the reels are pflueger presidents 2 are the size 25 and one size 30, rods are ultra lights and and one BM sharp shooter 6ft others are a 5.6ft and a 7ft. i think richard gene gets good distance with those cheap eagle claw 6ft ultralights yellow in color, they might be fiberglass. pn fl 204-6 i would love to get the hang of using 1/32oz and maybe even the 1/64oz
To stop the line from jumping... Don't fill it so full and really hold the line tight with a hand in front of the reel with drag run down really right.....line twist is whole nother issue.

To do that and get good casting distance with nylon line you’re going to have to step down to some 2# test line. The line you are using has a diameter of .203mm. The true breaking strength of that line is a little over 6 pounds. Most US market 2# test line will have a diameter of about .165mm and break at about 3.75 pounds. The smaller the diameter of the line the further you can cast.Quote:
