Was happy catching fish yesterday until pickerel started slicing my line like a razor blade with the loss of three lures and jig heads. Never liked using wire leaders with clips due to the affect on lure action - especially small plastics on jigs.
What do you do ?!
Here's what I would do... curse a lot and change lakes. [emoji3]

Braid. But guess what, necessity IS the mother of invention.
Found two methods:
One is using AFW
- 49 Strand Micro Diameter Stainless Steel with no coating.
- Feels and acts like thread
Attached it to the chartreuse lure below and caught a pumpkin seed this morning:

The other is AFW stainless steel leader, 27 lb test / 4lb diameter wire. Twisted the wire to form a loop for the line tie same as for the jig.
Nose hooked the 4" finesse worm (above) using a circle hook and caught a 9" crappie an hour ago in open water. The drop rate is super slow and the action excellent!
Problem solved (unless fish get me wrapped in some pad stems.

I was about to say: I've been using a steel leader for many years on any type of toothy critter and/or when fishing around sharp rock in lake or river bottoms.
i about ruined my blade the other day on some ones real thin steel leader that got tangled up on my jig .
tried to break it with my hand and then thought it was braid
whipped out the pocket razor and still no KABOOM
but it did really dull my knife something really bad
and yes I said real bad words about who ever left it hanging on the side of the dock
i use it shark fishing and thats about it
when we fished in Pa. for big pickerel we never used steel and i dont remember losing many fish ?
we fished big live shiners tail hooked with a hook right to our mono and let them dance on the top .
i know one thing ,,,a big chain about 2 feet long hitting a live shiner dancing on the surface at sun up ....

i forgot , we used it some on sheepshead around the mangrove roots near Sebastian inlet as well .
Those picks (4 of them) must have been super aggressive in the weeds I was fishing to completely suck those lure in and slice the lines clean. They weren't even large fish - the usual chain pick length (I can only assume since I never got a chance to see them) like this one - all head/no body:

The wire or wire thread attached to the jigs only have to be 3" or less and the 10 lb test braid attached to the short leader should be able to pull them out of heavy cover. Can't wait til Monday when I show them who's boss !!
we were only after the chains up over 24 inches . they sure were fun to watch chasing them tail hooked shiners all over the surface .
heck our baits were in the 10 inch range and we caught them on number 10 and 12 hooks and bread .
never ate them pikey fisheez but hear tell if you can get past the little y ones they are delicious .
wont ever forget the one that bit me one day in the boat when i was trying to unhook it . hit a vein in my finger and the blood was going .....
i was slow trolling for walleye by myself and it got on my rig and it wasnt really large and i thought it wasnt a big problem till it bit me :Rofl
me and that fish had a few words ! rotfl
Finger sliced once by a 2 lb. northern years ago and never again. Two pair of pliers are always ready - one to hold the jaw and the other to pull out the hook(s). Plus I never go out without carrying a plastic bag of bandaids and New Skin for partners that learn the hard way how to safely handle fish - especially picks!
Stainless wire leader! Will do it.
Recommend 3-4" of AFW stainless steel leader, 27 lb test / 4lb diameter wire. Anything heavier and lure action will suffer. The wire thread doesn't affect action.
