A Tail of 2 Shimanos....

Hello everyone, another month has gone by...poof just like that! Where I’m at the good gills and greenies are getting hard to come by even when the heat waves finally dying down, not much to show in term of numbers. What still get me out there from time to time is just pure enjoyment of casting a line and (if we are honest with ourselves) playing with our gears..lol. So with that said I like to do a simple comparo of my only Shimano UL reels: my faithful Ultegra 1000 and the new 20 Twinpower c2000s!Attachment 383513

Pictures say a thousand words...however using them painted a different pictures for me. I’ll say it just once the Twin is a very beautiful made reel decked out in gun metal and gold accents using top end magnesium metals and all ( a poor man Stella) it is! However aside from better drag, more BB (9 vs 6), a little lighter..it’s no much smoother than the Ultegra nor worth almost 4x the price I got it for, but it was a joy to use and that’s what count! Again not here to sell a reel just trying to share a personal views. Enjoy the pictures and please chime in!

They are great reels because they are Shimano, That being said the twin sure looks good. Great pics.

That Twin Power does look good on the Tict....nice fish too!

I have an older TP and it is a fine piece of machinery. I was kind of taken aback that Shimano did away with the 1000 series in that reel. I guess it is a sign of the times for JDM 1000 series reels. Yes we do like to play with our gear...LOL.

The Rockin Finesse was a phenomenal rod as was assured by many here but then I have no other rod that even come close to compare except a lower end MC Crostage 69, another great rod. However I haven’t really caught enough fish to pass judgement.

Hi, Alphahawk yeah Shimano as of late like to start their reel size at the 2000 mark. I wouldn’t mind in fact I’m glad I got the 2000 for a change because the line capacity for 3lb mono is that generous I can use this reel for saltwater light game fish of California jetty and pier like these fast runners caught last month with the MC rod/1000 Ultegra (4lb mono)...

I run twin Shimano Sahara reels on multiple rods . they are 4 or 5 years old and to date ...
Both reels have seem multiple thousands of fish and get treated like an old garage zebco combo ...
some might try to convince you of another brand and or some other agenda but in the end ....
I have not seen a more durable smoother reel in the price range ....
AND when I say multiple I am talking like in the 10,000 fish or higher range on each of them ! :yikes
heck I bet they been on 15 or more different rods since I got them as well :cheers2

Hi Ketchn, you are a living testament! I've never owned any Shimano reel fishing all these 30 plus years up until the Ultegra purchase 2 years ago. Thanks for chiming in.

I'm a little "Tict'd" that I don't own a rod and reel like that,, nice !

Hi Fly2bTied, it’s not too late. I got bitten by the JDM bugs b4 joining this wonderful community while lurking around to learn how to be a better UL angler without knowing there are phenomenal reels and rods out there that can add more pizazz to this ever increasing type fishing we call “finesse”. You certainly won’t catch less fish without them, but they do add enjoyment to the hobby just don’t go nuts. I caught just as many fish years and years using the good old American domestic gears like these BPS combo Pflueger and my favorite...vintage Fenwick rod and Fin Nor (extincted) reel...lol.

I'm afraid it's too late, I've been reading up on this forum as well before joining. I was happy to find out about the JDM products and have recently added my first JDM rod to my arsenal. I mostly spend my time with a fly rod in hand but as of late, with the hot weather, I have been focusing on deeper water for bream and crappies using my spinning gear.

I didn't want to post anything about my new rod without spending some time with it and learning what it can and can't do. It's a Tenyru Rayz Alter 61L-T. It is a fun rod to fish and I've caught a bunch of bream and small largemouth bass with it so far. The crappies have all been caught using my St. Croix's with heavier jigs.

I'm going to fish it side by side with some of my 3 and 4 weight fly rods and see if I get close to the same feel of fighting a fish. I have my doubts it will come close to my Winston's though but we'll see.

That’s an awesome looking combo! I’m a big admirer of the Tenryu Area trout rod for my occasional trek across the border to Utah but they are a little pricey. I picked up a MajorCraft trapara 562xul instead...lol

Thanks ! The reel is not JDM, just a Pflueger Supreme that I already had. The line is 4lb Mr. Crappie which is terrible on this rod, it fishes more like a 6lb line and has a good bit of memory. I'm going to try some small braid and see how that works out, hopefully it will be here tomorrow.

While I haven’t fly fished in over 50 years I still remember what it was like. I own 6 area trout rods....and am in process of purchasing another....all of them are fun but none of them give me a fly rod feel. That TenRyu is one fine rod....they just know how to make a great rod.....love the wood reel seat. The only TenRyu I own is the Lunakia. I’ll point out something to you that was pointed out to me quite a while back by Chris Stewart over at Finesse Fishing.....and he is 100 percent correct. You will get the most out of JDM rods by using the proper lines. Once I started using small diameter lines my fishing went to the next level. Be it the ester lines.....or the JDM nylons and FC lines. The small diameter PE lines out of Japan are off the charts good...but alas they are ultra-fine lines and I cannot see them even in the hi-vis. I wish I could.

Lots of folks here in the panfish section swore by JDM ester line or braid line of similar diameter, but I'm neither treading in those water! May I suggest Sufix "magic ice" in 3lb or 4lb like the one i have on the Twinpower? It's a phenomenal mono line with almost no memory. I personally like using 3lb or 4lb for both panfish and occasional pier or jetty salt fishing out of California coast.

I’m not going to say I was the first person in the US to try ester line but if I wasn’t you could fool me....LOL. I researched, and asked many times over at TT about ester. No one knew anything about it and there and wasn’t much online about it either. I had no clue what is was supposed to do. So I ordered some. Cussed my way through 2 spools of it and almost gave up on it because of management issues. Now it is is the main line I use. Since getting the new MGX Revo Theta there are no management issues. That reel sure handles it better than the Daiwas and Shimano I own. I used it today to catch a ton of 9-10 inch crappie. Using the Eradicator...the ester line...you feel the thump in your elbow.....LOL. But I do realize one doesn’t want to be using that line in waters where you are subject to get into numerous large fish.

Nice reel. I was going back and forth between Twin Power and Certate LT and ended up with the latter. MagSealead clutch and line roller won me over for saltwater applications. Not in ultralight sizes though, both are a bit too heavy for my taste in that department...

Aesthetically, your rod and reel combination is indeed exceptional.

Hi S-V, regarding the Crostage reel seat your guess is better than mine, i don't know much of components in a rod makeup let alone a high quality JDM one. The reel choice was real easy...it's either Daiwa 16 Certate 2004 or the 20 Twinpower, both were rated for saltwater capable reels. Both met the aesthetic department very well: Black/charcoal with gold accents just like the MC rod, however if '16 Certate was to be had for the same price as the Shimano new i would have ended up with it instead. But no regret here as both reel are very highly rated.

Hello everyone! Got a chance to escape Southern Nevada heat for a day of fishing the jetties and pier during Labor Day weekend in So Cal. testing out the Twinpower. Caught about 25 or so fishes in 6 hours between lunch breaks.

The last fish is called an opaleye...and they broke my 3lb Suffix like toothpick when they bolt toward the deep after a hookset...lol. Other than that the Shimano was more than capable of bringing them in. Enjoy the pictures!

Good times. Next time you're there, hopefully soon, try fishing small metal jigs near surface for bonito. Last time I caught a 20 inch rocket on my BC 83 Flex and 0.3 PE with 4 lbs leader. What fun that was, rod bent into a letter C all the way down to the lower grip...

Funny think is I’m not new to this Multidpecie fishing business but I don’t know the names of all these fishes I caught over the years until recently I bought a ID pamphlet off of eBay on fishes of Pacific Ocean. You right I saw anglers were jigging spoons and metal lures off San Clemente Pier and thought they were after much bigger fish than my 3lb mono can handle so never thought of asking what they were after...lol. I’ll be sure to try it out next time with bigger lines that’s for sure.

You only need tougher lines if you're raising bigger catch onto the pier or tall rocks (sounds like what you were doing this past weekend) or throwing heavy lures in the surf. There are plenty of places where you can fish from the shoreline. I used to go "ajing" with 1.5 lbs ester and have a blast with different size mackerel. Bonito is a kind of small tuna that is in season now, it makes runs like any other tuna – lots of singing drag if you have the right tackle...

P.S. Let's keep in mind that this is a panfish forum

Yes thanks for pointing it out I never forget this is a Panfish forum and since where I’m at I don’t have the option of testing bigger fishes than 5” or 6” bluegills...for which the Twinpower is overkill if you ask me. But I’m not here to talk about the fishes I fish for, panfish is no exception but here it is just so I’m in right place...:)
