Anyone use freestanding chairs such as the ones for deer blinds? Seems like it may be more maneuverable when fishing 2 people on front deck. Not sure about the stability and height, etc.

Absolutely no experience with that or ever seen it done. Is it even legal?

Not sure why it’d be illegal.

The so called spider chairs are used in a lot of trout boats out in Arkansas. I don't know of any place they are illegal to use.

A co-worker got fined and made to trailer his boat for free standing chairs. He wad anchored while catfishing. The Illinois DOC ticketed him for unsafe equipment and escorted him to his trailer.

That’s crazy. I wonder what mods I need to declare it a cooler or I could drop a pin and connect them lol.

i would only be comfortable in them on the lowest floor and only if the gunwales were higher than the seat of the chair. you never know when one big "roller" will come by and throw you out!
as someone mentioned above, i have seen them in flat bottom river boats.
Just a thought.
At speed on the lake with any rough water and a freestanding may go airborne. The millennium side kick with the B100 seats are very maneuverable as well as same material seating as hunting chairs. Plus they hold down with the pedestal
Definitely wouldn’t hold up while running. I would be looking to use while fishing with wife and kids only.

Personally .... I would not do it. Too many things can happen too quick....even when just using fishing with the motor shut off. Somebody could come flying by on plane and throw you or whoever chair and all out. Just save up and get a double seat or a Millineum Side kick and a couple of seats.
I have one of the millenium bases and it is pretty solid. I plan to go to a double millenium rig but wasnt sure if it would get me to where i wanted so I am using this for now to decide where i really want to sit and make sure everything is good before dropping the money on the sidekick.
My first thought when I read your opening post title :

Tried it years ago . Water was cold and deep !
I know a guy who used to fish out of a metal folding chair that he would put on the front of his Polarcraft flat bottom boat. He never fell out of the boat as far as I know. :dono:dono
I would also add a ladder to your transom, if you don't already have one, in case the wife & kids weren't able to lift you back into the boat if you ever fell overboard.
I have a bad back so I have been using a folding camping captain's chair for years with no problem.I use the regular size one not the director's style. A good telescoping ladder on the transom is a good idea. I have one that folds over into the boat just in case and I always wear my auto inflatable life jacket..
This is what I've been using with no problems at all, Millennium Marine D-100 Deck Chair, if some how it would be illegal then I don't think Academy would be able to sell them after all it is marketed as a fishing "deck chair". Obviously one must use some common since and not use it or leave it out while running at speed.

Did you manage to save the chair?

one time i had a heavy guy use a folding chair in the front of my 14 ' jon boat he tipped over and almost put both of us in the lake he grabbed on to a tree and kept the boat from filling with water i leaned as for over the other side of the boat to keep it from tipping over he pulled himself back into boat. we bailed out the boat and retired the lawn chair. never let a unsecured seat in my boat again ,that was 50 years ago.
About 10 years ago my wife and l fished with a guide at Weiss Lake. He found 2 office chairs real cheap he took the wheels off and used them in his Astro bass boat for his customers to sit in. One was beside the console and the other was on the back deck. He would lay them on there side and tie them down when running the main engine. It was very comfortable and surprising stable due to the large base. This guide didn’t do it because of cost he had the money to buy any type of seat he wanted or a new boar just for the seats.

I bought this used. I am going to mount it to the rear deck of my boat using cooler tie downs when we're trolling. When I don't need them, undo two straps and pull them out. Its just for fishing not for running.
