Went out this morning to play with my Humminbird 997cSI and found some crappie beds and also some bluegill beds. Thought I would show what a bluegill bed looks like.
If you look close, you can see fish inside the beds.

Now that is pretty darn cool! Am I looking at htis right, is it 4' water depth?
Yes, it is 4 feet deep.
Everytime somebody posts some of these pictures, my wallet starts twitching. I don't need one...I don't need one....I don't need one......Maybe I'll start to believe it if I say it enough.:(
The reason I got this unit was to find bluegill beds. I scanned a small cove the other day and found 3 big pods of bluegill beds. It took me about 15 minutes to scan the whole cove. It would have taken me several hours to cast the banks all the way around the cove trying to locate the beds. This thing is just awsome.
1weezer.....my wife is going to hate you:D
going to have one on my boat by the end of the year ......somehow.
1weezer do you know the difference between the 797 and the 997 other that the screen size?
I got a 797ci this spring and I can't beleive the detail on these units. Lakes I have fished my whole life and I find out something new everytime out.
Tim
You and me both. Those units are just bad!!!!!!!!!Quote:

Does it show PVC? Can you capture the screens or did you just shoot it with a camera? Post some more samples.
Looks like I'm going to have to start saving the pennies.
Water clarity has no bearing on the unit, nor does day or night (I had someone ask the that saying it wouldn't work at night because the sun isnt out) Sun has nothing to do with it, its just regular sonar waves. PVC does show up but its not very well defind, the shadow will show up better.
The best place for all question and answers is the yahoo group called sideimaging.
Another difference between the 797 and 997, is the 997 uses dual frequency the 797 has only one, most that have the 997 use the one frequency like the 797 has. Also the 797 has only one mmc card slot, the 997 has 2 card slots. If you bought 797 and plan on using a card with lake maps you will not be able to take snap shots with the map card in the unit at the same time. You will have to remove it and place a different card in it.
Here is a pic with mine, it shows some brushpiles and xmas trees the reason you can tell its a xmas tree is look at the shadow it cast.
I've seen these sonars in stores, but I didn't even look at the prices on them. I'm sure they are very expensive, but I can also see how well they perform. Thanks for the post.
Just looked up the price on this unit. Its about $1700-$2000 depending on who you get it from. My question is.. Do they make this unit without the GPS system? Other than marking good fishing spots, I don't need the GPS protion and I'm sure it drives the price up considerably.
Thanks,
Buzz
Once you see the gps on this thing, you would not want it with out the gps. When I first got it, I did not intend on using the gps. But since I started using it, I have quit using my other gps units. The gps on this unit is just awsome.
Another good thing about the unit with GPS. As you are riding in your boat and you spot something on the sonar that you will want to go back and fish later. All you have to do is move your cursor over that spot and mark it. And you never have to slow down. What happens is the screen freeze frames while you run you cursor over the spot and mark it. After it is marked you go back to normal sonar.
I have the 987C and have had it about a year. As they say I would not leave home without it.
Shilored is the one that recommended it.
Jim
Would you guys cut it out:D I would love to have a 997 maybe before to long they will drop some in price to where I could afford one. The bluegills beds look awesome I wonder if you could find Redear beds as easily.
Go to www.humminbird.com They are offering to sell these things and set up a payment plan for you. hehehe That should make it easier to get one of these units.
Hey Richard, I've got one on the way because of Mr. Simpson in Kansas had one at crappie camp. We had a blast playing with it. If all goes well there's nothing safe or sacred on the lake. Jerry and I think we have an application for it when hovering on brushpiles. All theory now but soon to be applied.
O.K., Lets say I decide to buy one of these for my Nitro. Would you recommend mouniting on the front of the boat at the trolling motor or back near the driver's seat? I know this has been a topic of discussion before, but just wondering who has them where?
Buzz
P.S. Can I come stay with one of you when my wife kicks me out for buying a $2000 depth finder?:)
The 797 is only 890 to 999 depending on where you find it at. I bought the 797 thinking I would not like the smaller screen, I have learned to deal with it. It does pretty much all the same things as the 997 and is half the price.
I would mount it at the back. That way you can idle around the bays or where ever you want and look at the BIG BIG screen.
The cabling is networkable so I've purchased extra cable runs for power, etc. and going to use it in both places - on the bow when hovering over crappie condos and at the stern when trolling my crankbaits.Quote:

I thought about canceling it to get the Hummingbird, but after talking to them I decided not to get the $1k one since it's only a 5" screen and it does not have them same detail or technology at the $2k one.Quote:

The smaller one has all the features that the big one has. However, it does not have as much power as the big one has and the screen is much smaller. Plus there is only one slot for a SD card. But other than that, it does every thing that the big one does.
I was at crappie camp w/ darryl & Mike simpson with his, and if you are a guide, I think it would be a "must" have tool for your clients. Marking brushpiles on a GPS would be the single biggest reason to have the higher end unit. As you go by, you can mark an area 100 ft wide looking for brushpiles, and as the other guy said, freeze the picture, move the cursor over, & mark a waypoint. you can troll 100 feet off of the bank & mark brushpiles in 5 feet of water 10 feet off the bank. It's almost like cheating to me. I was interested if Darryl would go through with it. He was drooling at the mouth at crappie camp in greeson. it is a way cool tool. I just don't think it would be appropriate to have a 2k depthfinder/gps on a 1k boat... Ha!
Richard.
See if you would have bought the thing. When I was telling you about it. You might have been able to catch fish then. LOL
Yes these unit are great.
've been lloking at some side imaging sonars. does this one allow you to see forward at all? That would be a huge plus when spider rigging. Pretty awsome being able to see that much bottom. With a regular angle sonar transducer you only get to look at a few feet of bottm in 6-8ft of water. I have certainly never seen that good an image of beds, thats just cool.

I bought the big screen earlier this year (and yes, I mounted it on a flatbottom boat!).
I will not tell you I can cook a pot roast with it (yet), but Slipcork and I ran it straight out of the box on a maiden voyage and loved it! Since then, I've figured out many other cool features. I haven't had the time to fish much this Spring, but I'm gonna take a full day (soon) just to play with my new toy.
It is WAY too cool. And the picture taking is REAL easy!

I believe I can speak for everyone at crappie camp in saying "The unit Mike Simpson has is A_W_S_O_M_E". I started looking around for the satellite dish in his boat cuz I KNOW that thing must be able to pick up ESPN! Not for sure of the model of it, but I believe it was a 997. Sure wish I could find one on the side of the road :D
I just bought an old 17' Bass Tracker that I am going to refurbish, stick all my good stuff on from my current rig. Then do a complete refurb on the 15.5' fiberglass, paint and new seats included. I should be able to sell my old rig for a 2k profit. I think I will invest the profit into a 997 unit. I'll post pics of my project from start to finish. I have seen too many posts about these units and I just can't stand it anymore!
Well I am sorry that someone in there sales department does not know there product very well.Quote:

Side imaging no matter what size screen is very useful.
I have a 987C which does not have all the features that the new ones have but it is still better than a non sideimaging unit. Thats my thinking.
Jim
I have got to get me one of those!
Jim glad you are enjoying the unit. But as soon as someone gets to see one on the water. There hooked. Shoot i could even sell these things..Quote:

But have not seen a thing from Humminbird for that. You would think they would at least send me a new 997 to show off also.:D

I am glad to see you guys getting into this technology. Wasn't too long ago a member here was chastising me for fish targeting. haha
Ain't technology grand. Now we need a stimulus underwater raido beam. Yep. Target a fish, zap it with a radio ray beam. Make the fish angry. Wiggle jig. Wham!!! A FISH Tazer!
Tom you make it. And We will get Todd to wiggle the jig :DQuote:

Just got off the phone with Cabellas, which have layaway, 4 monthly instalments @ $550.00. OH what to do what to do? What I am I going to tell my wife? May wait a while and see if the price comes down.
Marc
I wished I had known that!Quote:

Maybe I can scrimp and save on my jigs and get one, but that will take a lot of time and I am not a patient type on buying stuff.
I have a 997 on the console and a 797 on the trolling motor. And I will have to say that if I had to choose between one or the other one, it would be the 997 hands down. If all I had was the 797, it would be a great unit. But you can see the 997 much much better. I had a problem with my 997 and have to send it back to Humminbird. I had to use the 797 all day today. Like I said, the 797 is a great unit, but the 997 is the best.Quote:
