Rigged up a recently restored DAM Quick 110 on a Wright & McGill Far Cast 6.5 foot fiberglass rod. Lots of rod bending action! Been getting into some shellcrackers lately. They've been more rare this summer for me. Some fat gills joined the party too.

Great pics and thread. Love them shellcrackers. Like your rebuilding skills and showing that you can have a lot of fun with a rod and reel made a few years ago.

Thanks. In most cases, "rebuilding" these old reels doesn't take much skill. Just persistence and a willingness to do A LOT of cleaning. This Quick 110 was easy. It was in nearly perfect shape, just overloaded with coagulated, old grease (and less than the amount I've found in some other reels I've worked on). Removed that, polished some of the moving parts, cleaned every thing and then applied the appropriate amounts of grease and oil. The reel turned out to be super smooth (one of the smoothest of the vintage reels I have). Other reels need more cleaning, bail springs adjusted or replaced and once in a while a part of two replaced. I tend to stay away from basket cases. I'm lazy!
That 11" shellcracker is one of the hardest pulling ones I've ever caught. It just wouldn't quit and ended up being s several minute fight. Lots of fun!

Nice fish and the rebuild looks really good. You know, for me the full parabolic rod bend is something to behold. All of my fly rods but one are what they called “full action” and part of the fun of those rods was the bend and feeling every move in your hand. Good job!

Indeed. These old fiberglass rods might not be as sensitive the the new stuff, but for float fishing it doesn't matter. The bend and action when you tie into a fish is magnificent.

I have one of those old reels somewhere in my shop. Bought it brand new. Cast a lot of plastic worms on it back in the day. Agree when cleaned up the were a fantastically smooth reel for that time period. If not mistaken those were made in Germany.
West Germany. The 110 was first offered in 1967.

Really nice reels. I wanted one for my rod back when I was in my early teens, but couldn't afford it.
My first UL rod was a DAM Quick, I had to settle for a Garcia Mitchell 308 to mount. The rod had rubber or silicone sleeves on both ends of the reel seat, so when you tightened the seat, they met and you were holding that material instead of metal.
I wore the gills out in my Grandmother's 15 acre lake with that combo. Still have the 308 but don't remember what happened to the rod.

Nice work on the reel. That big ‘cracker is a stud, as are a few of the gills. I find some here on the river now and then. They fight like no other.
That is a super nice ShellCracker, would like to tangle with him in some JDM UL gear. I hit an 8in today in a small lake near Lynchburg VA and he gave me a fit for sure.

Caught a few more this evening. The shellcrackers and gill are right up on the bank. Nearly all my catches were less than 18" from the bank. Could another spawn be on?

I've been using the older version of that reel. The Quick Microlite. I've got a couple of 110's and a 110N as well. Nice reels.
Very nice fish! The gear is neat as well!
Good friend of mine found a active bed using with his side scan. He took 12 good gills off of it. They have multiple spawns many times corresponding with the full moon.

I rigged up my 5 1/2' Eagle Claw Featherlight glass rod and did some sunnies this evening. Eagle Claw still makes that rod and now it has a more modern handle and Bass Pro has a knockoff that is almost identical to the older model I have that they call Micro Lite Glass. Once the gills get to 6" and more they give that rod a very nice bend. Really fun to fight panfish with and the sensitivity isn't too bad either. The 5 1/2 footer handled 2# GAMMA with a 1/64 oz jig head just fine.Quote:
