Advice is on meal a week for crappie on Weiss. Eating Weiss Crappie must not be too bad or the whole state of Kentucky would be sick!

A lot of it has to do with the way a fish species stores fat and retains the mercury. That is what a game warden told me.
I read that too @ BobD. I looked at a number of state sites and I found that Crappie are rarely listed on advisories which makes me feel pretty good. I will use this post site to check states I decide to visit and fish in as a precautionary measure.
I have always been told that bass, catfish, and bream eat off the bottom. Crappie eats up in the water column.
It has to do with 3 things. First, how long does the fish live? The older a fish gets, the more mercury and/or PCBs are ingested and retained. Second, what is the fat content of the fish? Fattier fish tend to store more mercury and PCBs. Third, what is their diet? Fish that each minnows are eating short-lived fish so less contaminants are ingested. Fish that eat larger, older fish are eating a diet that has potentially more contaminants.Quote:
