anyone have any recommendations for a guy in MN that is going to escape to some where while this blows over?
Single guy here with the lund and truck ready to go, just need a house or what not to rent for a month, preferably close to a good fishing lake and not too many people.

Sounds like a great plan. I'm a bit jealous. I imagine one of those little float plane fly in cabins would be awesome. Find one with a little Jon boat and leave your stuff at home.
Drive over to Montana for the trout fishing.
so a little more info, they are putting a mask mandate in place and I just don't want to be around the stupidness of both sides of the equation. Like i said, I have my boat trailer and truck ready to go, would love a space close where i can go shooting too(long guns and pistols)
I need internet to work during the day, any specific recommendations are truly appreciated!

I'm open to most anywhere I can escape....SD or Wyoming seemed like a good idea as I was hoping to find a farmer who needed some help eliminating some prairie dogs.
Montana and mountains would be cool too.....open to ideas here. the more specific the better as i don't want to wind up in Meth country!
Go to Yellowstone. The trout fishing is world class. You can't hunt in the park, but there are plenty of places where you can hunt.Quote:

We just came back from a trip to minesota from San diego,ca. We stayed in deadwood, black hills are great. Montana, Wyoming are both pretty warm now. The eastern parts. There were camp grounds all over black hills and the temp was prefect, the rally in sturgis is coming soon, you'll want to be after it or before it.
I was heading to brainerd,mn on a lake, but covid turned us around.

The black hills area is awesome. I hope you were able to see Mount Rushmore! Sturgis...no interest in being around that mess....
the lake up north is kindof like what i am looking for, where were you going to go? I surprised covid effected that.
Consider the possibility of renting a camper trailer and leaving the boat at the house. Map out your venture ahead of time and make a solid itinerary before hand. Check for WiFi capability and such at each location. Feel free to go off grid on the weekends or when work allows. Plenty of good stream fishing to be had for trout in the aforementioned states. And a good may resorts or lodges rent out boats. As far as mask, sounds like frustration to me. Take it with a grain of salt, I've been in states they required them and not but a few were complying. On the flip side been in places where no mask is required and they all were wearing them. As far as shooting or prairie critters, look to the west. North New Mexico, or Colorado! Seen thousands around Eagles Nest, NM a few week ago. Good luck, and safe ventures if you hit the road!
Have you tried looking for places on VRBO? We are taking a late Sept trip to Lake Cumberland and booked a nice place on that site. They also have an app. Good luck and happy trails wherever you decide to go.

VRBO is my current plan unless someone from here has a better suggestion I was fishing on here for the places to fish, what lakes, streams, areas to go to.
Like i said, I don't want to wind up in meth country and want to enjoy my time away from home.
Currently looking in either north\east SD or south of glacier national park in MT.
Boat may or may not come....if the area is best know for stream trout fishing, well, i love that too!

Remember that the Yellowstone river runs north from Yellowstone.
I have a friend in Glendive Mt. which is in the eastern end of the state who does very well on Walleyes in the river.
Also, the Fort Peck res. which is very large isnt far to the north on the Missouri river.
That area should also be very good for prairie dogs also, so go prepared.
I hunt them on several ranches south of Miles city, but there isnt much fishing in that area.
Ask around after you arrive and things will fall into place.
If youve never hunted prairie dogs by all means do so.
There are no license requirements to hunt Prairie dogs in Mt. or Wy.
The stream fishing is looking more like the thing to do, and if i can get a hook up on the prairie dogs while I'm there, (hopefully someone one in a local bar or i might even knock on a few ranch front doors and ask permission if I really can't find anything)
I'm not opposed to moving to a couple of different places throughout my time their either, seeing a lot of that beautiful country is one thing i really enjoy.
I didn't know yellowstone runs north, so now after hearing about the walleye fishing and video above...my sights are moving away from needing my boat :)

If you are headed into Yellowstone N.P. you may want to go by way of Cody, WY and fish Buffalo Bill Reservoir that is just west of Cody. Walleye were illegally introduced into that reservoir a number of years ago. There is no daily bag or possession limit on walleye at Buffalo Bill Res. and, if you catch a walleye it has to be killed immediately, it is illegal to release them alive back into the reservoir.

You can go to the Alaskan wilderness, where there is about three people and trillions of hungry salmon, for about the same price as a week's vacation in the lower 48. There's no sleep involved with that trip, though. It never gets dark and you can see those salmon swimming around your feet 24 hours per day. It'll drive a weak man crazy.

Alaska isn't cheap even back 20 years ago I went. Unless you just take a plane in and bush craft in rough country that is, still quite costly to staying in the lower 48. Heck milk was $8 a gallon their in 99 in Anchorage. I can't believe you hadn't mapped out a trip by now, pretty easy and a whole bunch of good ideas been tossed your way. I took a spur of the moment trip a few weeks ago, fished Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado in a week. Expenses less then a $1,000.00 for the trip. Crappie.com is great and all, but we can't map out your trip for you. Procrastinating doesn't get things done brother, get to living my friend! Plenty of America to see and fishing to do! :)
Several have mentioned that Alaska fishing is expensive. What would you consider "expensive" for 5-6 days of fishing for salmon in Alaska?

Depends on your trip and lodging. A week in Alaska with lodging, fishing and necessities covered depending on group size $5,000 to $7,000 be in the ballpark of what would be cheap "reasonable" with 4 or more people. Best consider about 25% more than that after gratuity and all. Drive your own vehicle, pack your own tents and rough it and cut that number in half easily. Depends on the experience folks want. Outfitters, guides, lodge and shop keeps are no different then ours, they have to make a living as well!Quote:

A friend left for Alaska Sat. until the 9th of Aug. He begged me to go with him as he does every year he goes. He said the air was $500 but not what the rest of it cost. I had too much to do at work to go anyway. If I go to Alaska, I want to hunt rather than fish.
An airport is the last place I want to be. Even before this virus.
One thing I hate to point out is that a month isn't going to have anything blowing over. Also, any place you want to get to has already had people with the same idea. I'm from a different part of the country, but I'd love to go to Lake of the Ozarks or one of the many areas in East TN or even Pickwick. That will get you on the TN river and you can go a long way on it. While you can go a long way on the MS river, most of it's polluted and it doesn't have dams that create nice lakes like the TN river does.

As for the comment that this wont blow over in a month....of course it won't. This virus is part of life from now on. Humans haven't been able to get rid of Polio, Measels, the common cold, or even AIDS, this virus isn't going to be fixed with a pill or shot in the next 6 months and i doubt even decades.
But we all need vacations!!
