Anyone buy a used boat lately and have experience on this? I thought several years ago you only had to pay taxes on the trailer, but believe it is different now.

yeap ------ join the crowd ----- trailer, boat, and motor 25 hp and above TAXES ARE REQUIRED. To get it registered in Louisiana have to show that the taxes was paid. Even if it's not new and was bought from another state ---- LOUISIANA TAXES HAVE TO BE PAID (or proof that they were paid) on the estimated value to get it registered in Louisiana.
Been a while since I have bought any boat. I would try to get a bill of sale for the trailer and one for the boat and any extras the tax rates may be different. Sales tax as opposed to road taxes
Not completely true. It used to be no sales tax on private boat purchases and then they changed it. There was a big uproar about it and they changed it back. Now, you get the private party form from department of revenue, I think, and bring it to your local sales tax office and they stamp it for you. Then you bring that to LaWLF (or a title place) and they'll issue you a boat registration and title. As for trailer, I think you do pay taxes based on value and then DMV issues the title/registration on that. Get two separate bills of sale if you can because both places require an original bill of sale.Quote:

I had to have 3 separate bills of sale: boat , motor , trailer. Better yet, pass an act of donation on all 3. Nobody will know the difference.

Act of donation only works for immediate family. Father/Mother to Son/Daughter or vice versa. And yes you will need a notary.Quote:

He won't really need to do that. It's ok to put whatever price on the boat because sales tax is exempted for person to person "occasional" sales. I'd put a small price on the trailer, though, as I think you will pay tax based on the value of the trailer and then have to get the tag for that.Quote:

Thanks for the info everyone. I’m looking at (have a good buddy looking at) a boat today. If I purchase, I’m definitely going to separate the boat, engine, and trailer on the bill of sale. Seems 50/50 on the folks that recently boat a boat and whether or not they had to pay taxes. Two things are for sure, I won’t volunteer them and they will find me if I owe them. LolQuote:
