Taylorsville trip 4/22/2020

Onready & I took our first fishing trip of the year (and it seems like it's been a year since the last one :bash ) and decided to head over to Taylorsville Lake. Pulled in at Settler's Trace & the lot was full, so we motored around to Possum Ridge & launched at around 1030AM.

Water temps 60-63deg
Water condition - clear to murky
Keepers (11-12" fish) 18 (mix of males & females, all White Crappie)
Egg condition - gold to dark yellow (gold eggs were mushy)
Bait of the day ... Junebug/Chartreuse CB Slider on 1/16oz weedless jighead
Depth 3-8ft deep in less than 10fow

My wife and I were there too at Settlers Trace. Had to park the truck up the hill and still was a line waiting to launch. We got there about noon. As soon as I launched, I realized that my registration for the boat was on the kitchen counter, decals and all🤬! So we didn’t travel far so as not to get a citation but we found a nice little cove and fished our way back into
it. Water was 60 degrees at the mouth and 64 in the back of the cove. Ended up with 4 keepers and 4 or 5 throwbacks. Fishing with minnows 3 ft deep in 6 to 8 ft of water. Feel sure we could have caught more if we had moved around more but had a great day anyway!

On a side note, we talked to a guy at the Settler’s Trace store that claimed he was at the state ramp and someone tried to steal his boat trailer in broad daylight this morning. Everyone be aware, these big crowds attract people with bad intentions!

Congrats! On the theft post I always lock my trailer to the ball and have a lock securing the hitch through the mount as well. :fishUSA FLAG+Cross+

Good job CP. I got there at 4:00. Had to go to Possum Ridge Ramp also. Caught ten keepers but had fun. One note, when I was leaving they were posting signs that ramp opens at 7:00am and closes at 7:00 PM. They were shutting the gates as I pulled off.

You may have seen me, then .... we pulled out right behind the tow truck, and they shut the gates behind us :yikes

Nice! Is the lake stained and are they closing all ramps at 7:00 pm now?

I didnt see if they were doing that at all or not. I only saw Possum Ridge. Yes the water was still stained. After this rain, it will be muddy.

The lake did have a few areas where the water was still a bit dirty, but a lot of that could have come from heavy boat traffic every day over the last few weeks. We fished one stretch of bank that was muddied up from crashing waves and still caught fish in the dirty water. According to the looks of some of the eggs, they won't be holding off much longer. Several of the fish we caught looked like they'd swallowed a golf ball their egg sacs were so big. :yikes

The parking lot at Settler's Trace was still pretty full and people were still putting boats in and taking boats out when we passed by on our way to Possum Ridge ... and Possum Ridge's parking lot was empty other than maybe 4 or 5 vehicles (2 of which were pulling out their boats ahead of us) ... so I doubt "all" ramps are only open 7AM-7PM. I'm of the notion that some "gatherings" had been taking place at Possum Ridge, and this was in response to that.
I did notice a sign at the campground that it's "Day Use" only (no overnight stays) ... so that may be a factor as well. I did not notice any sign stating anything about gate closure times on my way in, but then I wasn't really looking for one. But I could have been distracted by the blue truck/boat trailer that I followed out of Settler's (who it would appear had launched his boat at Settler's, then drove around to Possum Ridge & parked). I say "distracted" because as we both were coming up on the park office I noticed his retractable transom straps were bouncing around ... and just as we passed the park office, one of them came off. :Doh: The other one appeared to soon be doing the same thing. Once he parked I watched for anyone coming down to the launch ramp, thinking he'd launched his boat at Settler's and couldn't find a parking spot, so he drove around to Possum Ridge and would meet the boat there. I did see one person & asked them, but they were not the driver. We looked for the transom strap when we left, but did not see it ... so hopefully they noticed it missing and found it on their way out. :dono

Now I know why Possum Ridge ramp is only open 7AM-7PM : It's a State Park ramp :Doh:

With Settlers Marina being full almost always it almost doesn't pay to go to Possum Ridge or Settlers Trace. Why on earth does it not open earlier or go later. From dusk until dawn would be great but 7:00pm seems ridiculous. I'm going to start going to Van Buran I guess.
