Best Ultralight Rod

I wanted to ask the question and share my experience. I'm a little rogue in using spincast reels instead of the more common spinning and have always struggled to find a good, sensitive, ultralight rod. 95 percent of the market is heaver rods for bass fishing. I've tried many, but by far the best is the Okuma SST Kokanee Graphite Rods in 7 1/2 foot. There under $50 at Amazon and are amazing. I typically fish 1/32 oz jigs on 4 pound line in water as deep as 15 feet for Crappie and gills. I can feel the soft thump of a fish picking up my jig and tell the difference between hitting brush vs a fish. Where I probably notice it the most is the soft pickup of a Sheelcracker in deep water. Sheelcracker will pick up a jig off the bottom, if you don't recognize it, when you take the slack out of your line they will drop it without you ever knowing. The ability to feel that pickup (much like fishing a plastic worm) allows a hook set.

Thanks for sharing DB, will definitely pick up one of those rods. $50 is a great price. I have 2 St croix UL rods that I love, but they are more expensive.

Thanks! For sharing been using my b&m 8’ and 10’ jig pole very sensitive but I’ll probably pick one up for gill fishing I like using them b&m poles for float n fly for crappies !

I do the same thing with a 10 ft bgjp float n fly. You can sling it a country mile. Sensitive rod too.

Well I was using field and stream inferno rods but they quite making them. I like the 5'6 lighting rods but there around $50. They make some great rods if you want to spend a lot of money. I'm looking forward to see what everyone uses because I'm going to have to replace a few soon

You guys have some really nice ultralight rods. For a “cheap” decent rod, try Lew’s Wally Marshall Speed Shooter. For the money, it works quite well for ultralight casting.

Have a local that makes custom rods. I use hurricane Howard’s sometimes there great cheap rods.

I love my speed shooters I have 4 of those !

I have a Major Craft Trapaa 632 Ultra Light that I really like. The rod is very light weight and the 2nd most sensitive rod I have ever had in my hands. This is my favorite spinning rod for throwing light weight jigs for bream with 2 lb SOS line. This rod can probably be picked up for about $70.00. I have a heavier Major Craft SpeedStyle that I use for bass fishing and it is the most sensitive rod I have had my hands on. Now these are both JDM rods if you want more info there is a great JDM rod thread under the Bream Forum here on the board and Alphahawk (Trout Magnet Man) has some great reviews on Youtube. This thread on the forum can lighten your wallet in a hurry. Now this being said I have the Trout Slayer Series from Trout Magnet and the Okuma on my list of rods that I want to get my hands on now. There has to be a stopping point somewhere. (addicted tackle junkie)

Stopping point? I am not familiar with this concept. Please explain.

I want to try a t.c.b from B/M however Leland lures still has the promo type of this rod for less cash . Anybody know differences between these two rods ? I currently use a Browning "Air stream " And a Okuma "Cellio". Both are decent rods for the buck .

What's the name of the Leland rod that you are talking about.

My go to rod is the 8' duck commander by B&M. It is built on a jigging platform so the top eye is a little small for casting and I wish it was 7' for easier dock/tree shooting but my confidence is high with it.

Crazy thing is B&M quit making the 8ft.

And I love Ugly Sticks for my wife/ kids. They ain't managed to break one yet. I got em in several lengths for 20-30 dollars apiece.

T.C.B. Go to B/ m or grizzly , both have them . 6 1/2 ft. ultralight .

Here's a life hack I came up with that other kayak anglers might be interested in. Sit on top kayaks aren't effected as much, but sit in side kayaks make it difficult to cast with a rod having a long handle (you end up holding your arms out in front of you retrieving jigs).

Most rods I use have a graphite core through the handle. I cut the handle off about 2" from the bottom. Then make a second cut depending on how much I need to shorten the rod handle. I then thread a set screw into the rod portion with glue. Once the glue dries I do the same with the end piece.

Niice Hack! Some manufacturers are starting to make the shorter rod handles especially for kayaks. I don't have this problem too much with my UL rods but I do face it on my bass rods so I may have to consider doing this to one or 2 of them.
