Tied these split tails to be similar to the popular trout magnet. I think they will work . Since they have chenille bodies they will absorb and hold slab sauce which I think helps on gills and redear. They weigh 1/53 oz. The trout magnet weighs 1/35 oz. Attachment 368750Attachment 368751

i think one of the keys to success with the trout magnets is the shad head and how it moves the jig as it falls. your jigs will work but making them on a shad head will be better.

Shad darts were developed to use in rivers and current for Atlantic shad with a fast retrieve. Most bluegill and redear are caught on a slow retrieve or dead still. To get the shad dart to dart in still water one needs to raise the rod tip. My experience with crappie has been that a slow retrieve is the most effective. My two cents worth! I agree on the slow retrieve being more productive for crappie. I slow crawl the little jigs I use and find fish more often than not.
Very nice jigs they should work well.
One handle rotation every four seconds is about my normal speed.

Nice ties. I'm a big fan of duck feather jigs. Tie some with just the duck feathers and a tiny bit of flash, my go to jig for everything.

That's what I'm talking about, been tying them for over 25 years and still my favorite. Tie them from a #12 hook to a #1 and catch everything with them.
Isn’t it funny how the simple jigs tend to work so well. The 1/43 I’ve been tying work better with less tail material. Lost my favorite jig Saturday, I almost cried! It worked better than any of the other dozens I have and it took no materials or time to tie, wasn’t even painted.

I have a question for you, why not just use a jig head like the trout magnet has? I have lot of 1/32 Oz Dart heads and maybe I will give these a shot too! Been wondering what I was going to do with these heads, lol! Wish I had some smaller ones now!

First let me say that I own 2 bottom lead pouring pots and 44 Do-it-molds. So using lead poured jig heads works great. I'm a tinkerer Skip. I can make this jig without buying or pouring the jig very inexpensively. You can attach the brass bead by wrapping with your tying thread in less than a minute. One advantage of this jig is for vertical presentations it will hang horizontal. Many poured jigs hang heads pointing up. This is a unnatural position for baitfish. For horizontal retrieves it doesn't make any difference. I use both hollow and solid beads. I could make that jig weigh 1/8 oz also very easily but it would not hang horzinally. Just wrap the shaft with lead wire readily available. Fished under a float or fishing vertically deep the natural presentation works better in my opinion. Thank you, I have seen you guys talk about making these bead jigs and that a really cool idea. I guess the slotted beads will work with out the little nail. I have so many beads this give me some good ways to use more of them, some Brass, some glass and some Tungsten ones as well. Will give me a wide variety of sizes and weights, very helpful for me so than's!
