Boron Fishing Rods

Anyone have any experience with high end boron fishing rods? I have been reading up a little on them. If sounds like boron was first used for fishing rods in the late 70’s or early 80’s but didn’t really take off due to durability issues. I’m wondering if modern companies have figured out how to make it more durable, while preserving its good qualities (lightweight and sensitive). I even saw a Tict Rockin 10th anniversary rod that was made of boron and cost about $700!

Fished with one of the early bass rods back in late 70’s. Super lite and sensitive as all get out. But to stiff for me and they were awful brittle. I traded it before I broke it. Most guys I knew who had them either broke them or put on the shelf. I really don’t know how they could make them more durable but anything is possible.

I remember the Boron craze for Bass rods, and remember that it didn't last all that long. I also remember when Mitchell brought out the High Density Carbon rods (Zero Gravity) ... and I bought one and used it for a couple of years as my Crappie jig casting rod. Now it's used at my local park lake for stocked Rainbow Trout. :biggrin

I have two boron pistol grip bass rods, and one spinning rod. I’ve had them for a long time, at least 30 years. I have used all of them a good bit and caught a lot of fish with them. If they are brittle or weak you couldn’t prove it by me.

The only company (that I know of) building rods using boron is Winston, the maker of very fine fly rods.

Browning made some good ones. But the reputation was already out that they all broke so the damage was done. They completely fell out of favor. Keeping up with Tict I read about it when it first appeared. I stay away from one piece rods out of Japan because of high shipping fees and you have to pay customs. One thing the Tict boron is using......and now Daiwa.....is titanium. The new Presso Limited SMT has titanium in the tip...and just like the Tict.....it is priced way up there. Have to admit the Presso Limited SMT interests me though.

My brother and I got one for my Dad back in the day and he rarely used it. Spinning about 6’6” in length. Don’t remember where it got to. At the time it was the hot ticket. No experience with them in many years.

Somewhere around here I have an old Shimano pistol grip boron rod. I got it back in the 70's I guess with my first bait caster. I have been wanting to find it and stick it in the truck for a short rod to use after work. I have not seen it in some time, hopefully in the back corner of th shop.

I’ve been throwing spinnerbaits with one of mine, it’s a boron Fenwick and works well for fishing in a kayak.

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like a technology that was ahead of its time. I wonder if it will eventually pick up some steam in the high end rod market.

Randy - that Daiwa Presso Ltd SMT sounds like it uses technology found in the space shuttle! Ha ha ha! It sounds like a very technologically advanced fishing rod. It I can only image how sensitive this rod is. I also read the warnings about using it in cold temperatures and that is a little scary. I will be looking forward to your review!

I also remember when certain Bass boat brands brought out Kevlar hulls as the "new big thing" ... then a couple of Pros busted'em up and they faded away. :rolleyes:

In terms of fly rods, it doesn't get much more "high end" than Winston. ;)

Others have tried boron. Maybe they just couldn't make it work, at least not as well as Winston.

I had a couple of Browning boron. Honestly I could not tell much difference from graphite

Johnny Morris of Bass Pro sold me my first..Was supposed to be the Deal..
Doesn't even come close to JDM Rods,
G Loomis is the Best in my opinion....
Just me..Way higher than JDM Rods..
Especially if you can obtain the old Rods with cork handles...All the Guides on the White River use them...
