Seeings how it was pouring down rain yesterday, I tied a couple up to try out today. I have not tried this material out before but have heard they work pretty good.
Top two are Possum hair Zonkers, and the bottom two are kip tail. The are 1/16th and 1/32 oz jigs...

It's been a bit since I tied any and am a bit rusty...
No harm ,no fowl. Those look fine and should create the thump. Don't look rusty at all.
I'd never worked with the zonkers before and really not sure how far down the shank the thread should go, but didn't want it pulled out either...And thank you GrumpyLoomis for the kind words.
Thread looks fine. If any rusty shows the thread is a little rough. Not thinking the crappie will care.
Crappie will like them just fine.
Those will do fine James, save room in the cooler for some fish when you get em wet. I use a lot of small kip lately, real durable. Also take 4 or 5 V’s on a head like you used for the kip and keep the thread as short as you can and still make em tough. Been using lots of those and they’re doing very well. Naked heads too. Doesn’t get any simpler. Fish pictures when you get those jigs in the picture wet.
Thank you for the advice skeetbum...it's either been bone chillin' cold, or wet, or both lately. I can deal with the wet better than the cold, but together and my knee and back takes over and I'm done. Started to go today, but before I could get out the door the wind and rain started again. looked at the weather on the phone and said it was 34 deg. and felt like 22 deg. No since in going as I wouldn't make it from truck to the water before knee gave. been there done that and not fun. Supposed to get warmer soon. Hoping to get in and see doc this coming week and see what we can do with the knee. lots of icy hot, ice packs and a brace...just have to see. I know one thing...getting old with a banged up body ain't for sissies...

Wait til she gets a few years on her, she’ll understand a lot better. I’ll give her an old fart!! Hope you find a way to get comfortable enough to get some water time. And soon.
Skeetbum, she's giving me a bad time...Albeit she's just 19...I injured my L4-L5 area in my back and messed up my knees in the service years ago, and really paying for it now...Some day's My left knee is swollen up like a foot ball, and feels like someone is in there with a hot iron shoving it around. And that's before I try to stand and move around...And let's not get into weather changes...

Thanks deepfry. I had never heard of the Possum hair zonkers before. This last fall I was over at a lake here that has a walk across bridge and struck up a conversation with an older gent, guessing he was in his 80's. He was eyeing my lure containers and seen I had some hand tied jigs. He remembered a time he lived in Nebraska and a friend of his was killing crappie on some Possum hair jigs. Never said how the guy was tying them, and I found the zonkers in a local fly tying shop and thought what the heck. I might try cutting the hair off a piece and tie a couple like the kiptail jig and compare the two and see if it makes a difference to the crappie...
That’s good thinking. You may not like it but it’s sure worth a try.
Here are 4 I just finished with Skeetbum...Attachment 368913 I don't think they turned out too bad. I will say that hair is very fine though...I might try adding some flash next time, but going to try these as they are first. Oh ya...these are 1/32 oz with #6 red sickles care of a member here on CDC, "Bugman" at Simply Crappy.
Very nice, those will do fine. While you’re in experiment mode, try this. Use about 1/3 of the hair and shorten it up to about 1/4” past the end of the hook. Don’t tie a bunch til the fish vote but I’m finding that my skimpy jigs, which I tied on a whim, are doing great. Hope it works as well for you.
And Bugman is a stand up guy, like his work.

Hit the nail on the head. Those are the dimensions that are working for me lately. Nice work.
Cast, count to 3 or 4 for depth and start a slow retrieve, wait for the thump.
Thanks Skeetbum. Now I just need to get to the water. I went today thinking OK not to bad when I left the house. Got to the water, fishing from a cement bridge, and had whit caps on the water. couldn't cast, and dropping straight down had a three foot bow in the line. I tried for an hour and a half and not even a nibble. Gave up and came home. Wrelcome march winds....
I’m hoping you get some water time. I get to look at it every day, but the boss would get a little sideways I went to carrying a rod and some junk. No sense of adventure.
Closest water to me is where I went today, about 6 miles each way,and another lake about 10 more miles from that. Then Stockton lake is about 35-50 miles each way...Momma's big adventure is on the road. She changed companies two weeks ago, and now gone 3-6 weeks at a time. But it's what she wants soooo! But if she gets the kinda miles her boy does it will be worth it in the long run...
God bless her. I wanted no more than 2 weeks, less in later years. You don't want to be around me after 3 weeks.

My #2 son drives and has for a really long time now. Is out there now delivering Medical Oxygen to hospitals. He has been running LPG until the recent cut backs where he was running. Now over in the FL, Ga. Ala. areas. Just praying he doesn't catch that dang Virus.

Yes, our loved ones out on the road is always a concern. After being out there continuously for 31 yrs. I have all the faith in my sweethearts ability, however it's the OTHER folks I worry about. Just because you have the experience doesn't mean everyone does. And that is always a concern. I was out there for some 16+ years myself till my back and knees said NO MORE!!! And I had to give it up. So now she does it and I stay home and care for our little fur babies...
A friend who was also a driver called and asked if we wanted another one. Seem's someone abandoned a little Chihuahua puppy at an Alabama fuel stop and drove off. This driver watched it happen. So now we have three CHI.'s. All females and all rescues. Attachment 369220 This is Sugar, Attachment 369216 Miss Leila, And Attachment 369218 the baby Ms Bama, or little bit as I call her most of the time. Her size and stature don't stop her one bit...We love all of them. And when Momma comes home....Back ends try to over take the fronts. And with these three can't no one sneak around the house as they let me know when ANYTHING moves outside...the courus is music to my ears...
Thats my sweet Sugar and Bama, and then Rosie who we lost last year!!!
They take our hearts like children James, and I could go on for a while. Both of our fur girls are rescues.
Driving isn’t for everyone but it suits me, dislike micro management. Management too. Better by myself. Well over 2 1/2 million now. I don’t have to listen very hard to hear the road calling my name.
It's been 11 yrs now since I had to climb out of my last big truck, but that hyw still calls real hard...when I'm on a trip now, I have to take more breaks than I used too, just to get the circulation back and stretch mostly, but I still go every now and then.Quote:

I still do courtesy lane change, flash lights at trucks to clear them over, let'em out in front of me so they can get out from behind a slow vehicle....but even tho I observe the truck courtesies, for me, the OTR, is only a whisper. I just started driving for my local Co-op hauling fertilizer part time...seasonal only, after spring, by June I'll be done for most part.

Glad to hear your another survivor of the road hankll. I just helped my babe with a mess. Missouri requires all comercial drivers to go to a license office personally and turn in their medical short for. Something about having to sign a paper in front of an agent in the office that yes they did go to a dr.'s office and do the physical... Anyway with her changing companies she had to do another one, only it was in Ohio at their dr.'s office, and with this corona virus and the licensing offices closing and or cutting back hours, making it very difficult to get her paper work turned in to them, especially with her on the road...well we finally got her to an office by the skin of some teeth...at least she can keep driving anyway. I know this corona mess sure is making it difficult in more ways than I care to count...
I now know about the FMCSA CLEARINGHOUSE.gov....
I had to get my hazmat endorsement redone. Because of the mail route, I was already in close proximity to retirement, so I let my original hazmat go at the last license renewal. $86.50 for FBI fingerprints and background check, $8.50 for knowledge test just to drive part time for maybe 3 months...it is still a money game, but they mean business after 9/11. I know the in and out of the truck James, I’m in and out over 60 times a day. I do roll off for a good sized solid waste company. I’m home every day and have benefits. Also did the mail thing for 5 years, from a sorting center to a town and back, four times a day, split shift. Money was OK, shift sucked. Left it when I went to TN in’05. A few years to go before I get a check from our uncle and I need to keep working but not at all sure if that’s in the cards.
I hope everything works out Skeet. I just couldn't take the pain no more. Doctor said if I kept at it I could be in a wheel chair before I turned 60, so I got the message. Now I'm hoping I don't need knee replacements... but don't know how long I can take this pain every time I move. It feels like bone on bone in there...
