Does anyone use braid with a slip bobber? How does the knot for the bobber hold on the braid? Does it slide easy or does it bite into the line when tighten? I’m looking to extend my casting distance. I do a lot of shore fishing in the early part of the season and it always seems that that the fish are holding just on the edge of my casting distance with 6# mono. I tried going to 4# mono but those pesky channel cats cause to many break offs.
FYI ...no matter what you hear or others say braid aint for casting crappie paraphernalia ….just saying
of course you could come watch folks with braid try to do it and see for yourself , but I am hear to tell ya it aint the ticket in my book .
while you fight the braid I will ketch the crappie and that is a fact ….:Rofl
I’ve caught a ton of crappie using braid as line doing cast and retrieve using a jig only. You can debate all day about whether or not braid is a good line to crappie fish with but I don’t think there is a bober stop made that will not slip on braid.

Caught a whole bunch of crappie on braid casting jigs and never had any problems but have never tried bobbers..with braid you can feel them inhale the jig with a good sensitive rod.
I use a length of 10lb mono and tie 5 tight hard overhand knots right on top of each other, I then clip both ends short,it grips braid like a bulldog.This knot is much smaller than the store bought kind, and goes through the line guides much smoother, so that you hardly feel anything.Quote:

The test of braid you select is also a factor. Forget about 10# test. Way too coarse, stiff and heavy to flow easily through the tiny eyes of a slip bobber. I use 2# test Fireline Crystal and it performs just fine. And I've taken some pretty big fish as well. braid works well in some situations ,but to be just as sure some tools aint meant for some tasks .
i knew the braid guys would disagree with me when I posted what is what it is ….
but sometimes the truth will set you free to ketch more fish :crazy:
Like Techno said you can knot mono and double tie stops on braid!
Any of the Major Brands have a New Technology braid...Original PowerPro and Spider Wire are a 4 strand braid of rope with a wax coating, PowerPro 8 and the new Spider Wire are the same lines with 8 strands of rope and the 2nd gen of wax Coating...they are cheap and work for people who don't care about their disadvantages...but some of us want more!
Now there are 12 strands (and more) of new material, micro lines, silicon coated, casts like a dream, color retentive, smooth and perfectly round, abrasion resistant, no noise, no cutting into cheap gear or packing line, etc....Of course you can't go out and pay 5 bucks for a spool either.
I use Daiwa MoreThan12...but there are plenty of other good braids out there!
Not a braid guy for panfish. Tried it and found there’s no real need to use it unless I’m fishing depths of 40 feet or more water and even then I use a10 foot leader of 4 pound mono. Most guys or should I say some guys use braid specifically so they can get their jigs back when snagged in a brushpiles. They try bending the hook to get it loose. They may not realize that they’re destroying their brushpiles why trying to get a fifty cent jig back. They weaken the branch and eventually break that branch off or even shift the way the brush was sitting. Anyway, no slip bobber braid fishing for me.
I doubt people buy it just to bend hooks out.We use it because you can cast a light lure much further, and get a good long distance hook set, because it has no stretch.Plus, there's no memory coils, and line twist to deal with.Quote:

I use 20# braid all the time. I don't have a problem with the slip stop slipping on the braid but it could be the ones I use. If you are using a light jig with a light float on braid you will sometimes have problems with tangles at the spool. I buy my braid directly from China, 2000 meters for under $30. Takes several weeks to receive it but is worth the wait.

Have you tried a bead with the braid looped through the bead a couple of times?

Not trying to toot my own horn (too loud :)), but I believe my bobbers are the best for braid.
I’m fishing down anywhere from 8-17 feet. The reason I want a smaller diameter line is that the first drop off o the lake where I fish is a ways out there. Cast of 70-80 feet gets me right on the edge of the drop off. To fish the deeper water, hundred foot cast are the norm. 4# test will get me there but to many break offs (predator fish and snag). Right now I use a large float for 2 reasons. One is visibilty due to the distance from shore. The second is for me to reach out that distance I need more weight. Right now I’m using 4#7 split shots with the slip floats that I’m using. I have modified my slip floats with longer than usual stems, mine are at least 7-9 inches long. I wrap small piece of bright tape near the top to help detect bites. This time of the year the bites are extra light and just a slight movement of the flag on the stem will tell me a fish is biting.i
At this time of the year with the ice just leaving the fish are still in the ice mood and hovering close to the bottom. One lake I fish the water has been drawn down 8 feet so the edge of the drop off to deeper water is out there.
Braid will be perfect for you in that situation, I would go with something like 10/2 or 6/1 line.Quote:
