Spider rigging reels

I’m in the market for new reels for my 6 spider rigging rods. I like all the reels to be the same. I’m looking at the mr crappie solo reels and have also considered the mr crappie under spins. I’m not trying to break the bank on these reels, just want something that’ll work the way it should and last awhile. I mostly cast for crappie and I’ve got a chunk wrapped up in those set ups. So for my 2nd favorite style of fishing, are the solo reels decent? Is there something cost effective I’m over looking? Maybe the little jiggin reels would be alright? Those little bait casters?

Most in my neck of the woods use low profile bait casting reels with thumb bars ....that way when fishing short line out on long poles....you can one hand hit the thumb bar to let line out as your bringing a fish in to the boat or net. I use 14 ft. Poles with either Shakesphere or Quantom reels. If you search around you can find these reels for 20 or 25 dollars ea.

I use the 9 dollar zebco spinning reels from Wal-Mart.

Just about anything that holds line will work. In my opinion it’s all about how much control you want to have over the fish especially you get a bigger cat or some thing else on. Those WM reels will work and you can set them where you can strip line like on a spinning reel by hand but when trying to retrieve line it’s pretty awkward. Small spinning reels work pretty good but I’m like G said I use nothing but cheap bait casters with thumb bar. Gives me much better one handed control when I have net in other hand since I fish mostly by myself. Plus generally you have a much better drag. On thing I don’t like with spinning reels is you strip line by hand a lot then you end up with twisted up line and bird nest causing you to change out line quite a bit and just the agrivation of line twist.

I use these from Southern Crappie Rods. They drop down further from the rod than other brands I've seen. I've landed some mighty big cats with these and they have worked fine. If you buy several at a time Ed will normally do better on pricing.

Go to grizzlyjig.com and look at clearance reels. They usually have some for $6 or $7 each. I have bought them several times.

Appreciate all the responses, the reels I have now I bought the cheapest of the cheap to offset the pinnacle rods I bought. These reels were from grizzly jigs and there junk. I figured they would be at 5 bucks a piece but they got me by for a few years. I just have to have all the rods and reels the exact same and when you times a 20 dollar reel by 6 it becomes not such a cheap reel.

I love under spin reels,,,,BUT, they just coil the line so tight and curly. I can't use light braid with low memory because it will cut off the line pick up. For my grand daughters at the pond they are fine. I just would not use spider rigging or for that matter jigging.

I don't spider rig anymore, but rather I long line troll. I had a older basspro crappie max spinning reel go down I've had for years. I went back with a new crappie max $20 in the blister pack, I used it for the 1st time yesterday it's as smooth as any high dollar bass reels I have I'm definitely going to replace the next with them.

That’s pretty crazy that you said that because I just bought 6 Shimano 10s the ones with the trigger on them. I figure they will do the job just fine

I too have a bunch of these reels. Local shop sells them for $10 each all day long.

The rear drag works great too. I can make adjustments to the drag while the rod is in the holder.

Cheap bait casters for me..lots of reel for the occasional big fish and much easier to handle with the thumb bar to release the line on the long rods.

Those closeout 25.00 ultrex reels from grizzly are really nice . Have had mine for several years . Handled a 15 lb. flat head with no problems . lol

I prefer a small spinning reel... there are tons to choose from I got my set off eBay...

I use the quantum q10 micro spinning reels. I find them on sale at academy for $17. Normally $20. But either price I think the my are one of the best micro spinning reels out there.

I'm with those that like bait casters with thumb bars for reasons mentioned

The solo reels are perfect for spider rigging. I switched from the Shimano 1000 to them. Shimano 1000 are good reels also, use them for longlining.

I hate underspin for spider rigging! I always hit the trigger when I set the hook. Either a cheap baitcaster with thumb bar or spinning reel would be my choice. They are basically line holders that you need to be able to let line out of easily or reel a little...

I’ve had those Shimano reels for a long time and they just work and nothing fancy. I prefer to have all the same reels on the poles so I know that one complete handle turn is 28-30” of retrieved line and I can set all the depths accurate from rod to rod.
