Question for the northern guys..

Not judging just asking, but why drive all the way to bama to fill your freezers? We have a pile of northerns on the Wedowee every year. They’ll fill freezers full in the back of there trucks and run them off generators. Wouldn’t Mississippi, Tennessee or Kentucky be maybe closer to drive? Or is the fishing just that good here? There one guy from Ohio that stands out on Wedowee every year, he has like a 20’ express with a 200ish Vmax on it, shoots docks a lot, has red rods sticking up in his boats, he’s came behind me a lot over the years and I’ve also came behind him. Wedowee isn’t the easiest lake IMO to shoot on and be successful, so he must know what he’s doing. A lot of deep V boats show up as well. Just wondering is all

Same reason people drive north to deer hunt it's better and it gets warm earlier. Can't blame them, plus no telling how much $$ they bring to the state. I welcome them myself. I only see them in the spring so they don't bother me. I've never seen the deep freezers but I have heard about it. I've help many of our CDC out of state guys and made good friends with some. Without a doubt there's some bad apples in every group but most are good people on vacation.

Same reason I drive to Louisiana five or six times a year, they like to come down here and fish. Like Glenn said it is warmer down here this time of year. Most are decent guys who just like to fish and go different places. I don't like the fact that some think they have to fill their freezers and are greedy. It is not their fault that our limits are maybe too liberal both in size and number. Most businesses around the lakes love these people because they bring in dollars. With the TRUMP economy doing well, people have more money to travel and are going to enjoy their off time. We are just going to have to deal with that. I'm sure you would enjoy a trip to Mississippi or even up north to do some walleye fishing and you would want to feel welcome there.

I felt like folks go up North hunting for the size of deer. Big Body and Antlers, that’s why I asked about the other states. Miss, and tenn has big fish compared to us. We have a lot of fish, and big numbers, that’s why I assumed they came here.

The laws are clear on what and how many fish can transported across state lines. If the "freezer" scenario is happening then presure needs to be put on authorities to stop it.

I like to see and fish new places. It's refreshing and relaxing. I see different wildlife, birds, different conditions beautiful lake homes and get to eat out at new restaurants. Adventure probably say's it best.

Undoubtedly you haven’t seen the hundreds of posts that used to be on the Ms page about Yankees coming down here and taking over our lakes. When water is right on big 4 you can’t get to a boat ramp for them. We used to have a real problem years ago with folks and freezers. Dropping limits and increasing min size kinda stopped a lot of that. I to have made a bunch of friends from up north through CDC and I have never really let it bother me much. Only issue I have is the very few who are so rude at boat ramps and want to fish right on top of you. I just let em fish and help if I can. If it wasn’t for out of towners in spring time a lot of the local businesses wouldn’t be there for us either. If you do feel that you se someone who is really taking more than they should, pick up phone and call game and fish. We still at times have those same rumors floating around and I have found that’s what they are is rumors. We have far more trouble with locals pouching. Getting a limit going home drop them off and coming back for more. And I agree they come because of normally better weather and fish biting and I can’t say that I blame them at all.

I've been coming to Weiss from Kentucky every March for the past 14 years. Like others have mentioned, it gets warmer in Alabama sooner, the overall quality and numbers of fish, seem to be better in my opinion. Not to mention in March I've got a bad case of cabin fever, January and February winter months in Kentucky seem like 6 months to me. Not to mention, I can never seem to get away from work or family obligations at home to make time for fishing. By planning a solid week out of state trip, I have nothing else to do but fish when I get their, lol. It also allows me to spend quality time EVERY year with some of my best friends for a solid week. We're able to just relax and catch up with one another. The lakes in Kentucky can fluctuate 20-30 ft in depth this time of year because of the spring rains, most of the lakes are usually very high this time of year. The lakes in Alabama rise as well but not as drastic as Kentucky Lakes. My favorite type of fishing is longlining and Alabama lakes are set up and much easier to use this technique than most Kentucky Lakes in March. With that being said I've contributed thousands of dollars to the local Alabama economies over the years. Between Hotels, rentals, fuel, food, bait, guides, equipment, and licenses, Alabama sure gets a fair share from me. I follow all the laws and never keep more than what's allowed. 90% of the locals I speak with and run across are some of the nicest people I've ever met, they're always willing to help and show true southern hospitality and for that I'm grateful. Occasionally I run across a few who let it be known they don't appreciate me coming down and crowding their lakes, but that's few and far between. With the good Lord willing, I hope I'm able to continue our annual tradition for many years. Looking forward to meeting and chatting with the Alabama folks in the future. The people that fill freezers are not sportsman they are profiteers. They should be stopped.

Anyone from from a different state that are sportsman are welcome to fish Wheeler/Wilson area by my acord. I will do my best to put you on fish.

I wasn’t throwing rocks at anyone lol. I was just wondering why drive long hours when other lakes are shorter, and for the most part I got my answer, like i said I wasn’t judging just asking. I help out of towners and locals both get on fish, show me respect I show you respect. But be a butt to me and I’ll be one back. Lots of good folks both ways. And the freezers aren’t “rumors” a guy from Indiana can tell you that with the ticket he got from the DCNR getting him at the hotel here in town. Bad apples everywhere as well as good ones. I get more frustrated at locals prob than out of towners. Folks has seen me pull a lot of fish out from under one dock, I leave and go to the next one and come right behind me and started jig whipping a persons dock or pontoon. Dock owners get mad and i don’t blame them. Then I come back the next week and they ask me to leave all because someone don’t know what there doing and ping and bang there property up. Ha!! Most folks know I’m a local, I got a old junky boat with junky equipment, but it works lol. And far as keeping fish, I keep a bunch every year, but we have a lot of beer drinking fish cooking every year also. Cook 5 gallons or more of fillets at a time regular. I try and catch over a 1000 every year through the year. And come dec, ole freezer be pretty much out of crappie. If he’s 9 inches he’s riding in the box. ����

I’m a carpet baggin fishing fool northern yankee that likes to catch bigger crappies you all have lots more of and and I also loves to take advantage of your southern lakes and hospitality. Guys a lot of the freezer thing is if you are like me and come down for two weeks at a time when on a trip I can't keep crappie from spoiling in just ice. I freeze them and then I don't have to worry. I only take a limit and don't do that very often but when I get home I have good fillets and nothing goes to waste.:twocents

I’m from Bama , and I’ll be honest! I seldom put crappie in freezer! Wife and I like a good crappie dinner 4 or 5 times a year, but I want en fresh and unfrozen! I have seldom seen slob fisherman, but I know they’re out there! Follow the rules and you should be welcome to fish anywhere in this great country! Break the rules and you shouldn’t be allowed to use our great outdoors anywhere!

My wife and I have been married for over 45 years and we love each other. At the same time we occasionally need a break from each other and I’m not sure how many more fishing trips are left in me. With that in mind I hope to see some of y’all in a few weeks. My buddy and I plan to stay at little River cabins. I’ll be the Kentucky boy out a hollerin my head off, enjoying every moment that God allows me to fish. Come look us up last week a March.

I would love to fish for crappies without drilling a hole this time of year. If I came to Alabama it would be for the chance at a 3lb fish. My biggest MN fish is 14 15/16". I would probably eat a few as well but I am not bringing a freezer.

If you want a 3 lber your chances would be better in Mississippi JMO.

We come just to be warmer. We do not bring a freezer. We may eat a few, but mostly just want to feel the thump without a snowmobile suit. You all are welcome to come to Missouri Camp the first weekend in May and even the number of fish out. We appreciate our Crappie.com friends.

I think some of it is a desire to combine the love of fishing with a desire to travel a little. I'm at least 10 years from retirement, however, I'm already daydreaming of all the places I'd like to travel to and fish if Lord willing I make it. Bucket list includes heading further south for crappie this time of year, ice fishing up north, and an Ontario fly-in trip in the summer. :fish fingers crossed

Me personally ,Im just hoping for a Richard Gene sighting , lol
