Do Not Seek The Treasure.
i already know about the treasure , just wanting to know what lake conditions are . fished there many times but not in the last 8-10 yrs .
Fish were moving shallow but this front may move them back out. Fish have been caught in the back of creeks for about a week.
do tell sorrydog ?
It hasn't been on fire. Few fish I caught was pulling around pads. Fish in the channel no doubt are on hungry strike or some kind of fish KETO diet refuse to hit a jig. Nobody in the camp catching much. Sure after this storm yesterday and cold weather, fishing want be any better this weekend. On the positive side, I didn;t hit any stumps!:Rofl:Rofl:Rofl:Rofl
I'm heading down on the 28th for 16 days. Staying at Talquin Lodge. P.S. Tell me about this treasure you talk about.
the treasure is ....giant slabs !
Lake Talquin, at one time, was the best Crappie Lake in the Southeast. It was a treasure! My first time down there was in 1974 and went down almost every year since. It is a treasure no more. It is still a good lake for quality Crappie in Florida but average at best. My last trip was two weeks ago.
so danbo , what would you consider some top crappie lakes in the southeast ?
Alabama River is more than likely the best, Clark Hill is good, Oconee is good, and Santee Cooper is coming back. I love Lochloosa but the size of Specs are smaller. This is my last year fishing out of state. I have had a good run but it is time to slow down.
Never fished Mississippi but I hear they are some of the best.
any particular part of the alabama river ? buddy of mine that fishes one of the crappie trails told me jordan was prolly the best . didnt know if you meant the alabama river itself or one of the impoundments on the river ...
west point my home lake , only place i've crappie fished in bama is logan martin . will have to try some of the others .........
Any updates we were hoping to head that way 3/2. Thanks
Danbo, I sent you a pm.
I’m at Talquin now. Water temp was 58-61 depending where you were at yesterday. Cold 31 degrees yesterday morning and 35 degrees last night. Fishing yesterday was awful for us. Two boats never caught a fish. No one I spoke with had caught any either. Hopefully the warmer weather headed this way will kick them in gear.

It’s too windy to troll. 2 foot waves today on main lake.

No wonder we didn’t catch any!! He caught em’ all!!
Those pics don't look like they were taken at Lake Talquin Lodge....But some nice fish.
What he said
thats what i'm seeing on those fbook sites . just wondering if all the rain has hit there and if the water looks like chocolate milk ?
Fishing has been pretty slow this year. But thing about Talquin, when it turns on it will be HOT! Have caught some nice fish this year but not the numbers i have in the past.

dam nice fish sorrydog , what'd it weigh ?
just got back from talquin everything was good except the fishing ! 2 days of trolling netted 13 keeper crappie . huge downturn from 8-10 years ago . talked to a local at the ramp friday morning , he said in the 42 years he's been fishing talquin this was the worst he had seen it . said if you had 6 keepers in am and 6 keepers in pm you had a good day ! any thoughts as to why the lake has gone down in recent years ?
i live on lake talquin. thoughts on changes in the fishing: fishing pressure from georgia, many people keeping limits, some TWICE in one day, crappie being absolutely pounded during spawning. tremendous increase in the number of cormorants and pelicans in the last 10 years but primarily human fishing pressure. when in lived in colorado i saw a new lake absolutely destroyed by people keeping their limit (trout) every day. we are destoying our own resource.
thanks for the comment catfish45 , I agree for the most part . we fished down there once or twice a year for 7 or 8 years about 10 years ago , great quality was the reason . we did keep a limit and ate them . crappie fishing was best I've seen . haven't been down in 7 0r 8 years so this trip was disappointing . I totally agree on the cormorant theory but have not seen any pelicans myself (maybe they are there during the winter months) . I also agree about the pressure , seemed to withstand it 10 years ago , but now it looks like its taken a toll . I talked to a local guy at the ramp that said hed been fishing there 42 years and this was by far the toughest hed seen it . said 6 keepers in am and 6 keepers in pm was considered a good day . on a side note , I wonder what the life span of a crappie is ? any fisheries biologists out there ? the size and creel limit is what , 10 inches and 20 per person ? anyway , good to talk about this topic .....
Talquin fish are typically 6.5" in a year and 8.5"-9" at year two. life spa of a crappie is typically 7 years. the pelicans are out and about a lot, usually in 1 or 2 big groups. i've seen them in the river below the dam even. they roam a lot. see them only occasionally. i believe there are about 25 or so, but they eat lots of fish.
