Super tiny jig!

Based on a comment by LazyCody on a thread I started, "Smaller is best?", I decided to try out tying some 1/80 oz jigs. After all, I had just finished my homebuilt rotary vise. And ordered my first materials. My plans are to tie (practice tying) my own Crappie/Bluegill type jigs. So LazyCody spurred me to think about 1/80oz jigs.

My first impression...... Dad gum, they're tiny! The jig head is the size of a BB. The whole jig is just over 1/2" long.
I'm guessing, I will be downsizing the materials for tying these.

They will work fine for pan fish, I use 1/64 and 1/80 for blue gill. Just bent the hook up a little.

Fine time to bring it up, what size thread will you be using? If it’s 140 or 210 it will fill up fast.. might try a thread neck first, and keep the thread closer to the head. I use 70 on the small stuff, and be aware that it will break easy compared to the others. Good luck, I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Those should be killer on the gills

Already figured I'd have to downsize. On everything!
As far as 70 denier breaking easy, it can't be any worse than the fuzzy thread I've been playing with! I actually like the look of thread neck jigs I've seen on here.

I've done the "bend hook up" trick for some time.... But these will definitely need that done.

Fox squirrel tail with a red thread neck would be killer for gills....

killer jigs were at the tinley park show i picked up some 3/32 jigs something i didnt have. i do tie on 1/80 jigs mostly a short shiny mop body from a bathroom matt

yes they are microfiber. mine came from bed bath and beyond' the style was in 5 colors of which every otherfiber was dull and one shiny. the only shiny ones i have ever seen . they are narrower than the basic mop mitts so the 1/80 jig is perfect.

tlefire - coyote tail should work fine too.

So I've seen several suggested hair.... Squirrel, coyote, and more!
Maybe I should look at harvesting my dogs hair....[emoji251]

Some have used dog hair, and I remember a guy using his beard hair, and they caught fish.

I have a red fox tail from a fresh road kill several years ago. While the hair is very nice the color is darker than I like to use. I should probably drag it out and revisit that stuff, been a few years since I’ve looked at it. I might tie different nowadays.

A guy on Ebay has 6 red fox squirrel's tails for $12. Same guy I bought my possum fur from. So far he has sold 109 sets of tails.

These are red squirrel tail jigs that I use for shell crackers. They absolutely hate em being dragged through their beds. Regular gray on the right and a dyed mallard flank mixed in too. 1/43 (from my 1/32 ball head mold).

Agree you may want some smaller thread for that size! I have some heads in 1/80 and 1/64. The 1/80 mostly are #8 hooks and a few #6, but the 1/64 I have #4 and #6 Sickle hooks in them, lol!

I like fishing 1/64 and 1/80 but still get them with a #8 hook at least if I am fishing crappie. Gills love those small one. I really like just a lightcalf hair in white and pink or white and olive.

I heat ya on the hook size.

I lean toward bigger hooks for the smaller size... Since I don't make my own, I'm sorta locked on what can find.
When I prefer Crappie and I get anything else, it's still fun to reel them in. It's a bonus if I get a gill. Better bonus if it's a Redear!

Bay Springs offerings for sure . They may be a little large though as 1/100 are the norm .

some pine squirrel zonker strips should work great on tiny heads!! Arctic fox tail would be great too!!

Did you mean for this to be in a different thread talking about the different thread size? I find it interesting for sure and you must have a very good touch/feel for your tying. I have trouble with thread that thin and do wish I had a better feel for that.
I am going to try tying with more of my threads that I avoid like the plague, lol!
