Number one surprise or biggest “I didn’t expect that!” those of you that have Livescope have experienced??
Just curious. I told myself I would not be interested in one of these, but I’m captivated....

I can only go by what Slabeye has told me and what I've seen for myself when fishing with him, but ....
Fish will react negatively, sometimes, to the "popping/jiggling" of your jig when it's close to them.
Fish may go to the opposite side of a tree when one of their schoolmates is hooked and dragged away.
More fish will follow your jig and turn away than will attempt to bite it.
That's been the biggest thing for me. There's been quite a few times where I would have assumed there were no fish there, when actually there were lots of fish, but they just wouldn't bite. They'd play along and follow the jig, but that was all.Quote:

IIRC, the "cone" on the LS beam isn't that wide. If you can see the fish and the bait on the LS, the fish can see the bait. I don't know how wide the beam is, but read it somewhere before.Quote:

Short answer is you can't. :) Longer answer is that the forward view of the lives cope has a 20 degree beam. I just watched a video that claimed the beam was 9 foot wide at 25 feet. I usually jig with a 7' rod which means the width of the beam is less than 3' at the point of my rod (rough estimate as I'm too lazy to do the math tonight). In our stained water that is still close enough you will see the fish move to the jig if it's interested. Or snub it if it is not interested. Or move to the jig. look at it and then snub it.Quote:

The amount of fish that is down there surprised me, and how they won't bite at times. Many times when they hit its only a few of what is there.

Guys it works but if you hit them with line or jig they haul butt . You would be surprised how many move away from your boat . But if you see several slabs on a top and catch one the rest may get tight and refuse to play !theysaid
Having a lot of fish in an area and not getting them to take your bait is an interesting subject.
Having retired a year and a half ago after being a fisheries management biologist (in a mid western and a western state) for 45 years, I have numerous stories of anglers telling me, "there are no fish in XX lake or stream because I fished there and did not catch a thing." It is humbling, as an angler, to go fishing in an area and not catch anything only to realize there were many fish there, but you could not catch them.
Over the years, when confronted by anglers with the "no fish there" issue, I invited several of them to come along on sampling trips to that water. Most of the anglers were amazed at how many fish were captured during the sampling trip and the size of the fish that were sampled. Comments such as "I had no idea there were fish like that in this water" and "I never have caught fish that big here" were very common.
The one incident I vividly remember is taking an angler to a trout stream that he fished frequently. We electrofished a 300 foot section of stream and he helped collect the trout that were sampled. When we got ready to leave the area I noticed the angler just standing on the stream bank staring into the section of water where we had just sampled over 300 trout. Since he had been standing there for quite some time, I asked him if he was OK. His response was, "Yes, I am fine. You know how many times I have fished this exact stretch of this stream, and if I caught 8 or 10 trout I thought I was having a great day of fishing. Now, when I realize how many fish are here, I can't believe it."
You may be thinking what does this have to do with this tread about Livescope questions? Technology is now available to the angler that gives them an idea just how many fish are in the location they are fishing. Whether or not an angler can catch those fish is another story. I guess the bottom line is, just because you don't catch fish doesn't mean there are no fish there to catch. Now livescope users know that to be true.

I don't know about the ones in Arkansas but many times the trolling motor will make them bust out down here. It's really made me rethink my trolling motor methods.Quote:

We fish a deep Clear Lake, Very hard to crappie fish ..I had always thought with the improvement of the Trolling motor bigger blades..Spotlock..That Trolling motor wash spooked Crappie..I didn't realize how deep..Now I know...Livescope you can see them spook..

I’ve never experienced live scope first hand, but comments have just solidified my feelings that I’ve had for years. That being; sometimes fish just aren’t interested no matter what you throw or how you stink it up. When I first started crappie fishing I was able to fish a place literally loaded with fish. I could see so many on the depth finder that it was useless. Changing retrieves and ticks, bumps, taps, drops, and anything else you can imagine may get a fish but might not. It helped a lot in forming what I do today. For instance, a 2” lift of a bait looks unnatural and frequently won’t get bit. Now on the next cast I would drop the rod tip an inch or two, or hesitate just a split second in the retrieve of the reel, and get a rewarding thump. Touch the TM and blow the wash towards those fish and you better have something else to do for 30 minutes or so. Shut em down like throwing a switch. They wouldn’t leave but they wouldn’t eat either. TM noise was also a negative but it more depended on the noise level of the day. Windy noisy days and they weren’t near as touchy, but calm days they were real touchy. I hope to get to watch the show livescope provides one day. I wonder if I’ll stay glued to the screen or actually be able to fish some.
What l like is it lets you see how fish reacts to your bait, presentations, how spooky, lockjawed or easy to catch and how big the fish is.
Using LS I have been vertical jigging with 12 ft to 18 ft rods for just how far l need to get jig to fish using either a carolina rig or 1/4 ounce jig on top and 1/8 or 1/16 jig on bottom and slowly approach fish to catch and not spook. It is fascinating to see fish images in real time.

I have only had LS a few months but have witness some interesting behavior.
Sometimes when im vertical jigging I use a tiny jig and put a split shot about 18" above it and there has been countless times that fish will swim to the bait then come up and strike the split shot. Before I had always assumes it was just a short strike.
Other things I have seen, Fish diving 6 or more feet from above my jig and hammering it; The number of fish that are on the bottom or in the mud; The larger fish tend to stay out away from brush/structure.
You will fish..Its in our Blood..Livescope is just another tool..Fished a clear hard to catch lake full of President Holiday fishermen everywhere yesterday..Without livescope I would have went home..With a 0..10 boats fishing the same treetop..I don't get it..35,000 Acre Lake everyone wants to fish same tree...Folks they ain't going to bite....Livescope found the tree that hadn't been fished....Game changer...Not for everyone,......But a Great tool on a Tough day...

Are you in your death bed and no longer fish? I bought livescope last year when I was 76 and don't regret a minute of it. My kids won't get quite as much money when I die but they can take turns using my pontoon with all it's equipment. If I haven't worn it out by then, which I hope to do. :RoflQuote:

Things I have learned with Livescope. Crappie are very easy to spook. There are usually way more down there than you would believe and or absolutely none down there were you believe there should be a wad of them. I saw the split shot bite first hand yesterday, slowly reeled up until the jig was in front of the fish and wham. For every fish that bites there are a whole lot more that just hang there with the jig touching his lips. I have seen several crappie swarm the jig and not bite. Without LS you would not know how close you were to getting bit. It helps picking colors that the fish want. You will talk to the fish trying to convince them to bite.
Just like Jackie said it was a very tough day on that lake. Without Livescope I would have continued to grind away without a whole lot of success but thanks to livescope I managed 8 really nice crappie and released about a dz small ones.

I've always heard that a crappie will go up to bite a bait but rarely down. Can any of you livescope users give any credence to this?
They do both, but we found the bites/hookups are better up than down.Quote:

This past season we used LS to judge the attitude of the fish on structures.
If we could pull them up off and away from the structure to follow a bait at least 1-2 foot, we deemed them active enough to stay.
If not, we would move on to another spot and came back to them later that day and checked again if they were ready to play.
That system really cut down on the amount time just fishing and increased the amount of time catching.

I see them swim down for the bait about 20% of the time. I have seen them follow the bait up a long ways as you slowly (as in snail's pace) reel in a whole lot more. When I have a fish that is following the bait up but refuses to bite I drop the bait for a reaction strike. So far I have not caught a single crappie trying this but when the bait is almost back to the surface with a follower you have to try something. But that is a great tool to learn what the fish will and will not usually do. Even a failure to bite can be a learning situation. The trick is knowing what is going on in the first place. I don't see how that would happen without livescope.
