I wouldn’t fish there if someone drove me there, launched my boat, bought my fuel and gave me a 100 dollar bill.
Crappie that you can read a newspaper thru.
Indiana has stopped caring about fisherman. They cater more to pleasure boaters.
Don’t even have garbage cans at boat ramps. Can’t afford the manpower to maintain them. Sad

The one critical thing about Patoka that makes the lake hard to fish is lack of weeds and weed bed cover. You have to adapt and go back to structure fishing and rely more on your electronics to find the fish now. Patoka is kept at high water above the summer pool to keep from flooding the farmers out below more so.
Patoka Lake water levels are controlled by the Federal Goverment's Corp of Engineers not the Indiana IDNR. Just wanted to throw that out there.
It's true that the lake levels have been way too high. And the high water levels have killed the underwater grass. The grass needs sunlight to thrive and with too much water over the top of the grass the sunlight can't reach the top of the grass and the grass dies. The grass will come back if the lake levels get back to a stable water level.
The crappie that I've caught at Patoka were like little footballs. Even a short 8" long crappie had a lot of meat on it. But that was years ago. I've not fished Patoka in many years.
Talked to state biologists for patoka today said a lot of crappie need to be taken out.

goes along with what a game warden told me several years ago. On a stop and check he asked us what we did when we caught small fish, we told him we threw them back. He then said PLEASE don't do that, if you don't want to keep them throw them up on the bank anyplace except back in the water. This happened in the South Lick Fork area.
Patoka Lake Fish Habitat Build Dayhttps://scontent-ort2-2.xx.fbcdn.net...61&oe=5ED0FB52This should help Patoka
Patoka needs habitat???
I don't think habitat is a problem with all the timber there. Let's get the flooded water level under control so we can fish it.

How is the striper population doing there? Would think if they got enough size they may consume some of of the smaller crappie? Dunno

I would say they cater more to lake associations, the people who live on some lakes have political pull like on Maxinkuckee at Culver. Lake associations are able to influence more week kill approval and also they do illegal weed kill themselves. Lake Assoc. don't like fisherman on what they think is "their private lakes".
I've never fished Patoka but I might think a higher water level keeps boaters happier they don't like shallow water and its killed your weeds.

The structure is being put out on the main part of the lake where the Corps cleared the land before the lake was flooded. The creek arms are not part of this program as they still have plenty of trees in those areas. Those areas were not cleared before the lake filled up and had lots of trees that were flooded when the lake was first built. I remember catching Northern Pike that were suspended in the top of 20 ft tall trees in 25 ft of water. I could see the trees under the boat and the fish suspended down in the top of the trees. Water back then was a lot clearer than it is these days. This was in the first bay just South of the bay that has the fisherman's campground launch ramp. The year was 1978/79
The Corp of Engineers owns the land around Patoka Lake and there are no homes on that land. You are right, you have not fished Patoka lake. There are no Lake Associations on Patoka Lake. The Corp of Engineers controls the dam and the water levels on Patoka Lake. They control the lake level to control flooding on the Patoka River.
Patoka Lake is doing another Habitat Day real soon in March. Not sure of the date. Painter Creek.
I clearly remember those days. Patoka Lake then was the place to go.
Where would they put new structure in Painter Creek. Doesn't it already have a lot of submerged timber in that creek area? maybe at the mouth of Painter creek in the deeper water along the creek bends out there.
It's been a while since I fished in Painter Creek so maybe that timber is gone now.
Back in the days of crappie USA It was nothing to catch 13 inch crappie in that lake. I took a 3rd there with 17lbs best 10 fish . It was 1999 I think .

How true!!! Gone_fishing, how you been? Long time no see! :welcome I will never understand why DNR and Indiana Bass is building and putting fish habitat in Patoka as well as releasing bass into it. Most your bass tourneys are weighing in 20 plus pounds,,,5 fish limits. And there is still tons of standing timber in Painter Creek as well as darned near over half the entire lake. If COE would keep from flooding the lake the weed growth would come back and the lake would thrive again with abundant fish. Just my opinion. Nice to see you posting! :cheers2
We were still catching 12+ crappie 6 years ago. Not a lot but most fish still had some size to them. Know it’s mostly 8 inches and less. I know they stocked pretty heavy with walleye. Was this to help get rid of some of the small fish?
2 reasons. Walleye were introduced to fish for and eat. Walleyes introduced to help decrease shad population. However, I always question DNR not having the money or resources to raise the walleye fry large enough as they have only been releasing 10 to 20 million fry sometimes every year now for the past half dozen or more years at the size of 0.02 inches in size right after they have hatched. To add to that size, add the loss of weed cover past few years, the primary cover of the fry,,,what is the survival rates as I have fished for walleye numerous times and did better catching walleye when we had the weed lines and beds vs, lack of cover. So I give up, but will get sucked in to fish a couple of times again this year for the eyes.
Strictly fish food.
They really need to get the lake level down.
I did have some luck up the river near kings bridge and Walls ramp, but the water has just been to high most of the time.
My rule of thumb, anytime the water is too high to open the beach, better to fish someplace else...
Looking at Louisville website if they keep at present level it will be just right for summer pool
