Ok. Yall had your fun at my expense with my disaster trip yesterday. But for those interested here are a few livescope pics i took with my phone.

I've been having a hard time telling crappie schools and gizzard shad schools apart on mine. I can easily tell what is stripers and perch are pretty distinctive if they are balled up on the botom or even in singles. I can also easily recognize schools of threadfins. But I keep seeing these suspended groups of fish that appear to be crappie size and I will fish them and never get bit. Probably my fishing skills but I'm starting to think that some of them are groups of gizzards. I have been around some large gizzard schools and seen them flicking on the surface and they pretty much look like what I'm seeing. If the crappie are hanging on brush it's very obvious what they are but when they are spread out in open water, I become much less sure.

Brett, that's good pictures you got. You just got to get more practice at it. Thank you for showing us what we are missing. My little HDS 7 long time over due for replacement shows fish but no where as good as the LS. :Rofl Keep up the good work and show us more pictures. We all are learning with you.:highfive

Brett, I think a problem you and I both may have is setting our forward range too far out if we want to be able to tell crappie from big shad. 95% of the time I'm striper fishing with lures and I set mine at a forward range of 70 feet and almost never touch it. I noticed your forward range is at 90 feet. I can see that there are fish out in front of me at those ranges but often can't tell what the medium sized fish are as I mentioned above. I notice guys using the live scope on brush piles tend to set it at a 30 feet forward range or sometimes less. I feel pretty sure that we could better tell what we are looking at if we were to pull our range in a good bit as we get close to a group of fish. I didn't get a touch screen for mine so adjusting the range takes a couple extra pushes of the buttons so I will probably continue to use my jig to tell if they are the fish I'm looking for.

It was way out there because i was tightlining and headed towards fish far away.

I went to Murray yesterday jigging for stripers. I finally was able to see exactly what an open water school of crappie looks like on my live scope. Out in 45 feet of water I saw a tight school of smaller fish only 10 feet down about 50 feet out in front of me. I cast the jigging spoon, letting it sink 3 seconds before sweeping it back and am nailed by a really big crappie. About a half hour later about a mile away, I see the same thing again on live scope and fire the jigging spoon into them and catch an even bigger one. Even with my forward range set out at 70 feet, they were very distictively round. They also produced a very strong return. I keep my color pallet on the blue, which I like best for open water and they showed up very vividly red with yellow outlines. I was very surprised at how fast they were moving. The jigging spoon worked well because it would have taken a traditional 1/16oz crappie jig too long to sink into them before they would have been gone from the spot I cast. It makes me want to rig up a 3/16 oz jig head with a light wire hook with a curly tail crappie grub so I can bomb that into them when I see that again.
Funny you said about heavy jig. I saw video by 3Pound Crappie. He said the same thing. He liked to use a heavier jig casting in shallower water even with his fan casting into schooling in open water. He saw his livescope he could not get closer than 30 feet without spoiling them. The heavier jig would get to them quicker because of there movement.Quote:

Just throw a hand grenade into the school and net the floaters. If your aim is good, you should be able to get them all with a single toss.
He still use side image to locate schools and use live scope to fish in them.

I guess single poling like you say is going to catch on with LS when more people have it. My partner at work Bass fishes and I listen to him about how much it cost him chasing the bass all over the place. Lot bucks he drops for that single fishing he does. Striper fish ain't cheap either! Another question for any body! If you fixed a transducer on the side of the boat like some have for crappie fishing off a pontoon, would it help you in chasing a single fish if you saw it closer in passing? :scratchhead
I have no idea how good live scope will be for typical bass fishing. Being able to tell that the single fish you are looking at on a point is a bass and not a striper, carp or catfish would be important. So far I've used my live scope on brush for crappie and it's incredibly effective and also used it like I described above for locating striper schools in deeper water. I'm really looking forward to the herring spawn and the hybid spawning runs to see how it does for stripers and hybrids in much shallower water. There are times through blind casting and hitting point after point that I will find the hybrids stacked thick as cordwood and it will be a fish every cast. I'm hoping to be able to cover a bunch of water with my electronics and locate those schools more effectively.
Yesterday, there were loons thick in the back of a creek and I eased in and started casting and never got a single hit. This winter the fish just havent wanted to be shallow like they normally are. Rather than cranking up and leaving I decided to scan the area all around the loons with the live scope and just as I suspected I wasn't seeing a single fish around them. But as I turned to leave I spotted two fish about 40 yards from the current ball of loons. I cast my spoon and it was slammed by an 8 pound striper. I landed him and saw it had pulled more fish into my area. I immediately hooked another nice fish that was peeling drag before the hook pulled. From there, the fish hung around but they had seen my presentation and wouldn't eat. I tried a couple more things without success before they disbersed. Just because you can see them, doesn't mean you will catch them. You still have to fish. It just narrows down the water for me.
It should be banned all together in my opinion. As you may have guessed, I hate, and am stringently opposed to this new technology. They ought to change the name of it to "FISHING FOR DUMMIES" Half the fun of fishing is searching for your quarry, trying to figure out what technique and baits will be effective, what location, depth, and presentation to use, all while not knowing for sure if the species or size your after is even present. If your sonar can tell you how many, what species, size, and depth are available it has taken all variables out other than knowing if you can make them bite what you are wanting to feed them.
