Thinking about going to braid?

Opinions ?
I’ve used it for several years on bass and inshore salt water but have decided to put some 15 lb test on my crappie pole before the spawn.
I don’t spider rig , just long pole cover using jigs 99% of the time.

Also don’t use casting reel on the long pole , just the large Slater spoil reels to keep the weight down.
I’m hoping for more sensitivity and power to straighten hooks + strength when the bass and cats are hungry.
I’m spooled up with Suffix hi vis
I plan to black out the line near the jig with a magic marker.
Should I expect any problems?

I don't have trouble jigging with braid. You will give up some knot tying visibility but you could use Sufix braid in camo color. I use that and it really blends with the surroundings and no need for a marker.

I love braid for Crappie, Except spyder rigging.

All I have used for years. Only thing, on your jig’s make sure eye is completely closed. Braid will have a tendency to slip through the slightest opening. Especially using a loop knot.

For long pole/vertical fishing I use 20lb high vis Power Pro.

I tried 4lb test Fireline for a while. Excellent casting. Didn't knot up and lasted much longer than either mono or fluoro. Did not scare the crappie either. The main problem I had with it was the strength. When I would snag a brushpile the Fireline was so strong it would disturb the brushpile before breaking. So, I went fluorocarbon leader. Worked well. Finally I simply went back to fluorocarbon

Strongly thinking about it. I at least need to give it a fair test.

Great benefits to using braid while vertical jigging.....I like the stiff braid to help prevent rod tip line wrap.....

I use 3 and 5 lb regular power pro on a number of casting set ups. And 10lb power pro with a 2ft 10 pound leader for single pole jogging. With the 3/5lb braid you can cast a jig and float a stupid distance and still get a hook set. Way less line memory.

Thanks! I didn’t know they made it. I’d seen it in mono a few years ago. I’ll have to order some.
I couldn’t even find hi vis braid below 40lb test in stores.

I switched about 6 months ago to Spider Wire 15lbs Hi Viz for vertical
jigging and it’s the only route I’ll go! I have found if you start trying to minnow rig fish with a weight above a hook it doesn’t work very well, it all gets tangled up.

Been using braid casting and dock shooting for about 7 years now. I don't have any mono on the boat

Yeah, the only good thing about mono is to make leaders with, use that and you wont get as many tangles.

I'm vertical jigging about 98.763947% of the time. I tried braid for a while and didn't like it. The sensitivity was fantastic. However tying knots was complicated. Every time I would cut it to start tying a knot the line was so frayed it was difficult to thread it through eyelets. Also difficult to cut the tag ends off my knots. I think I'm committed to flouro.

Get yourself a pair of Childsize Fiskar Scissors ... it will cut braid "blunt" (no frayed strands). Braid is, however, very limp and can be a bit difficult to poke thru the eyelets of small jigs ... but, less difficult when cut blunt by the Fiskar Scissors.

I tie an Improved Clinch in my braid .... slowly & steadily .... and haven't had the knot pull loose. If the braid is brand new &/or the slick version, I tie the Improved Clinch with a several inch tag ... then tie a double granny knot in the tag as close to the Improved Clinch as I can ... then pull on the main line, cinching down the Improved Clinch and letting the tag line slip thru it until the double granny knot snugs up to the Improved Clinch. Then I take my Fiskar Scissors and cut the rest of the tag line off.

(Note: double granny knot is simply a double overhand knot)

I use Nanofil in either 12 or 14 pound test. I tie it to a fluorocarbon leader. I use 4 pound if using a single jig, 6 if tying on two. That way the leader will break before the main so it I have to break off I'm not losing expensive line. Bottom jig gets a fast snap. Very happy with this setup for vertical jigging and casting.

pros ….sensitive and strong ……
cons ….sails like a kite in the wind ….knots up easily ….wraps rod tips and snaps them off like a dry twig …..will cut a hand or finger like a knife ….freezes rock hard at around 25 degrees ….eats rod guides like a chainsaw .....will ruin a brushpile in a new York second …..bends hooks out like wet noodles and the list goes on ….
pros 2 …. cons 27 ….

p.s. I do kinda like the light sawing sound it makes on the rod guides when you set the hook I must admit rotfl

One more question- is the camo Suffix braid a mix of hi vis or just a mix the regular colors ?

I've used braid on panfish rods for years. Up here we are vertical jigging, casting, or working baits under floats. I run PP 2/10, but run a 8 # flour leader on 7 ft lite rods. Love this set up.

Just touch the tip end of the fray to the flame of a lighter for half a second,and you will be good to go.

10/2 PP will catch in the wind on retrieve big time. It will make you lose your religion. I love it for vertical jigging straight down. I've gone to 4 lb.Stren clear-blue and gold-crappie for casing. The clear-blue is stronger than the gold-crappie. Spider rig with left over line from bass fishing. All mono 6-15 lb.
Soak that mono in water for a couple of days. It works. Use line conditioner. Stren is what some guys on here told me to try and I love it. Cast great, smooth, easy to see and low memory.

I proved to myself; ( was walleye fishing and catching fish. Broke my leader off, so tied direct. No bites! Tied leader back on and caught fish again) you need some type of leader when using braid.Yes it can be hard to cut, but i found i had to change the blades on trim knives often for a clean cut. Then last year i gave he Rapala scissors a try. One tip was to run them thru a work sharp sharpener first. ( which i had) They were sharp but afterwards were much sharper. The lighter idea is got idea too.

I hate to disagree but this is too broad a statement. This may be true for crystal clear lakes, I don't know as I have never fished one. There may be a few special conditions on any lake under which you need a leader for braid but most of the time a straight tie to the jig works on the lakes I have fished in Oklahoma,Louisiana and Texas.

I use 20# test braid tied straight to my jigs all the time. The only time I am nor catching crappie are the days when the minnow fishermen with small diameter mono are also not catching. So I doubt those lack of bites have anything to do with tying braid straight to the jig on those days.

I no longer use any brand braid but buy it direct from China where I can get 3000 yards for around $20.

One of the places I fish is a gin clear quarry. The bottom is visible in 18 fow. The only thing you can catch there with braid is bluegill. Pike, bass, and crappie will avoid it. Switch to a clear mono and it makes all the difference. Other places I fish with mainly braid due to the stained water.
