Isn't that an awfully big area? Withlacoochee River, Gesundheit :biggrin
Yes Ed, typical Fl. River system, very similar to St. John's meandering scenario tannic, cypress etc.

Looks like an untapped adventure, many preserves along it's track, would imagine a very scenic peaceful place...
Very much so Jeff = high potential= finally turning over a new rock close to home(for an added perk...less time/travel expense):fish:ThumbsUp

I’ve seen some video of the panfish there but that was long ago. Worm fishing as I remember.
If you do a search, I asked a few years back when more were posting from west side. I recall Yelim and fishin813 and a few others had spent some time on it. If I remember right they had limited success on specks but were well entertained by shellcrackers and copperheads. Not sure the exact area they were fishing but I was interested in your area around Dunnellion.
Actually Mike, Lake Rousseau, which is the dammed up section of the Cooch, has a very nice fishery. Although hazardous outside the marked channel, I have enjoyed great success w/bluegill/crappie and some shellcracker. Fishing was thriving until a hurricane(3 years ago?) significantly impacted it. Fishin813 had a C.com friend (Jamin) that did an article(Summer longlining) about 7 or 8 yrs. ago and did extremely well. Additionally 89 Ranger also enjoyed banner shellcracker/bluegill fishing there. Harold(fishing813) decided against FCC tourney there due to out of channel underwater trees. I believe Yelim only fished it moons ago a few times. Anyway, same river(cooch) will have great potential for me w/o the travel to St. John's for the variables I enjoy. Just like anything, time/effort expended will hopefully yield success. Now, if I only new someone with marksmanship skills in the ultralight "skinny-mini" category to act as a panfish posse/ deputy...hmmmm?!!
Hopefully, in time, I will be able to put the pieces together= New Year's resolution. They say that hindsight is 2020, my case foresight is 2020:Rofl

I gator hunted Rousseau this fall. There are tons of stumps and stuff outside of the channels, and even some of the channels are a bit tough to figure out.
While gator hunting, I marked a bunch of what sure looked like crappies suspended on channel drop offs and stuff like that though. I'm certain the fishery is there if you're willing to learn it.
I know a few guys who fish the river too, but no specifics about it.
Never saw a gator while fishing, I'm sure they gotta be plentiful.

We vacation every summer in Dunnellon and have stayed on the river several times. I have fished it from hwy200 & up to Rousseau but never been on the lake due to lack of knowledge on the underwater obstructions. I know it gets very narrow near 200 & there are very large phosphate rocks in the river just barely under the surface. We've caught bass, catfish, variety of panfish & some small specks. Did well around the bike trail bridge just south of where the Rainbow connects, north of 41 near the old train trestle & the bends just past that, area around the Goldendale boat ramp was good also. Never caught anything huge but had fun & did well every time out especially for the summer time of year, usually very hot when we go. There is a bait shop on 41 near the Blue Gator that was very helpful & had some recent area catch pictures & an article about a woman who caught a large speck off her dock near Rousseau - think it was around 3lb+. I love the area would like to fish it more often but only make it there annually, I only take my small boat when we go - it's definitely not as deep & open as the St.Johns:twocents
Don't know how small your little boat is or what it's made of (aluminum is pretty forgiving) don't be afraid to go poking around during the day, the channels are decently marked. Just go slow.
When gator hunting, we get out of the channels and run over all sorts of crap. Just ease back off or slide over it.
I grew up fishing 'the river'(Withlacoochee) in the Dade City area. This was in the 70's and 80's. This area of the river is small where only a canoe or small Johnboat can be used when the water level is up a bit. We gained access to this part of the river by foot and experienced some excellent bluegill, red breast and bass fishing. My buddy has a 10lb bass on the wall that was caught from this area. As far as the Speck fishing, there is a spot on the river called Doze Hole (spell check) that had 10 fow as I remember. We found the Specks in the middle of this hole down deep (the few times we had access to a boat). The river runs through Silver Lake which is located in Hernando County. There are Specks in this lake but I can't speak of size or amount but I think it's worth a try. It can be seen from Interstate 75 to the east. Exit 301 to hwy 50 is the closest way to access this lake. This lake is not big but big enough to troll. There is a park and boat ramp there.
Thanks Specklocker- Appreciate your perspective and share.
