That's a tough one
There’s a lot more to that question than you might think. If you’re casting and maybe vertical jigging some, here’s what I like. The rods would go from 5’6” to 7pm’ in 6” increments. The 5’6” is needed in tight quarters, the 7’ is comfortable in open water and controlling bigger fish. The 6’6” and 7’ work well with slip floats and jig and cork set up. For line, I use all hi vis mono. You’ll try a few before you find the one you like best. I use BPS Offshore Angler Tight Lines for years now. Big spools and lower priced and they all have a good personality for the way I fish. A lot of my rods are 4lb with a few 6lb. I’ve been known to use it in 8lb when trolling cranks baits or heavier line is needed. Some have a strong memory that makes the line look like a pigs tail, which also cuts your casting distance and sensitivity. Don’t load up on any one brand til you have tried it and a few others. As of right now, I think I would go with:
1. 7 ft TFO ultra light with a Pfluger reel spooled up with 4 pound hi vis Mr. Crappie. For general work and blue gills.
2. 7 ft BnM Sam Heaton super sensitive for jigging around boat docks. Pfluger reel with 6 pound hi vis Mr. Crappie.
3. 9 ft BnM Sam Heaton super sensitive, Pfluger reel with 6 pound Mr. Crappie hi vis for brush piles.
4. 5 ft 6 in Berkeley lighting rod, Pfluger reel, 4 pound hi vis Mr. Crappie for dock shooting.
Not sure about the Pfluger reel sizes, I can’t remember and am in the car traveling right. (Not driving). I like Mr. Crappie line, it has proven tough and reliable.
I would like to try one of the Mr. Crappie Lews speed shooter rods in 7 ft for jigging and casting, and I probably will pretty soon. If not that one, then an ACC crappie stix.

The reels would all be the same....Daiwa Exist FC LT 1000S-P. I would be using 4 different lines. An ester mono in 2.3#....Sunline Troutist 3# test line.....2# test Sunline Sniper BMS Azayaka fluorocarbon......Sunline Small Game braid in 2.5# test. The rods....Tict Ice Cube Rockin’ Drift 6’ 9”.......Tict Ice Cube Rockin’ Finesse 6’ 9”......Graphiteleader Super Bellezza 6’ 4” UL......Daiwa Presso Limited AGS 6’ 6” XUL.

I do like the Pflueger high bearing count President reels. Very smooth
+1 on the President reels. A nice value for the money. I do want to move up to a higher end eventually, but for now the 20 size gets the job done.Quote:

The 4 Starter rods I would get would be...
6' UL mod action for casting at targets. 2000 size reel. 4lb line
6' or 6'6" light or med light fast action to shoot docks. 2000 size reel. 6lb line
7' UL for casting. 2000 size reel. 4ld line
8'-10' jig pole. inline ice reel. depending on what cover your jigging 4-15lb line
That would cover about anything a day of crappie fishing could face you with.
I just ordered 12 brand new (shimano ci4+ 2000) for 500$ from a store that was closing. I paid 42ish $ for a 230$ reel give or take. Yes that deal was extremely lucky but if you want a nicer reel watch the old inter webs and you would be amazed how lucky you can get.
I do not spider rig or troll when fishing for crappie so my list may vary from many.
5.5-6ft ML rod with a size 20 president reel. This will handle my dock shooting and fishing marina duties.
7-8ft ML rod with a size 20 president reel. This would be my setup for brushpile/bridge/slip cork fishing.
10ft ML rod with a cheap reel. This would be my spring time shallow water set up and my jig pitching set up. The reel is only a line holder.
7ft UL rod with a size 500 Shimano reel. This would be bluegill small crappie set up. Not really needed but you said four rod/reel set ups. I could make due with the first three.
In Oregon you can only use one rod unless you buy a permit for two, which I don't. Had to go look at what I have for crappie. Have a 5' Ocuma ultra light with a reallt small Ocuma reel. Have 4# line on it but keep hoping to find 2#. Have three other crappie rods, all are 6'6". One has a small Kast King I decided to try out, nice reel! Another has an Ocuma spin reel on it, bigger than my ultra light and the last has a Shimino ultra light reel on it. All have 4# line.
The Kast King has a Berkley rod w/light action. The Shimino and the Ocuma both have light action Shakespere rods. I really like all the rods! I like the 6'6" rods really well but then like the 5' Ocuma too. I can't figure out why I might need a longer rod! I know a lot of guy's on here use some really long rods.
I'm really liking my new 7' Ozark dock shooter, better than the Denali 7'. Same weight, but the Oz has cork and a faster tip - shoots farther.
I love my Cadence 6'3" CS7 1-piece MLXF. Casting, shooting, finesse - it does it all.
12' Denali Pryme heavy jigging. Great long long-line rod, or vert jig when you need reach.
Last, I love my Tict Ice Cube Rockin' Power 6'9". The hawk was right. Casting or vert jigging, I can feel a crappie/bream/trout looking at my jig. :ThumbsUp
Put an appropriately-sized Daiwa Regal LT on the top 3 (@$50 ea), and I have a Daiwa Luvias 1000 size on my Tict.
I'm good. No wishing as I have all 4 now.
IF I got 4 new rods and reels I'd be the star of the next funeral in my neighborhood :Rofl

I also am a fan of Pfleuger Presidents. I'd recommend going up from the 20 to the 25 because it has more bearing and may be a bit smoother but only weighs an ounce more. I have a 20, 25, 30 and bought 3 ladies pink 35s when Pflueger put them on sale for $20 on their website. I use them for Striper and inshore trout and redfish.
Both good reels. With my UL Rods the 20 balances just perfect at 6.2 oz. good balance makes the rod feel just “right”.Quote:
