That looks like the old OMC dual hose connector on there and I don’t think your Merc hose would work with it. If you could find the single hose Merc fitting that would replace that one and a vented cap you could make it work. Back in those days I think most of those metal tanks were probably made by same company just different fittings for different motors.
May be easier to find a hose to match the tank
The cheapest way out would be to use an OMC gas line but change the end the hooks to the motor to a Merc. Or you can change the fitting on the tank then you could use a Merc hose.
I'm with Bill on this one. A Merc Fuel Line Connector added to the end of a OMC line/tank connector plug should work just fine. But, first and foremost is to visually inspect the interior of that gas can, as metal ones can rust inside ... and you definitely don't want rust flakes clogging up your line or motor !! :twocents
Fishawk, take a close up picture of the fitting where connector goes on.
Didn't you have to open the cap a bit to run engine kind of like the vent on new tanks today?
My friend, all the things mentioned here are true. I have done this in the past and I had to crack the cap open to get venting.
Steve, my current motor is a ‘95 Mariner and has a fitting that is similar to the OMC but is a Yamaha and mercury compatible. They changed from the long skinny fitting that my’88 had. Never did like those. Worked ok but just liked the OMC style better. I used one that was connected direct to the motor and had a connector for the tank. Motor stayed on the boat, and old 35 if I remember.
Yes new portable tanks , have a FDV fuel delivery valve, looks like gas regulator on bbq grill . and after 2011 all port. Tanks don't have cap vent , the FDV is suppose to do that.
Let me take that back , they do have a vent at fill cap but only for release of pressure in tank for fill up
