Old age issues

Geez! I've been incredibly fortunate to enjoy excellent health especially not having any joint or back issues......until now.
I seem to have irritated my sciatic nerve and it has gotten progressively more painful over the last week. It was OK yesterday, but I could barely walk when I woke up this morning. Kept thinking it would let up but no such luck.
I actually had to use one of the electric carts at the grocery store this afternoon.
I managed to get the boat hooked up since I planned on fishing tomorrow, but it's a game time decision now.
I wouldn't wish this on anybody.

Bad stuff! I been there... had back surgery in 07. i still have flare ups from time to time, takes 2 weeks sometimes to let up, load up on inflammation pills, and dont bend over if you can help it. i got nerve damage, at night my legs burn like crazy sometimes,I have to watch what I do at all times!

Had my back surgery in '99. Still gives me problems especially on cold rainy days. Best advice is ice, ibuprofen, and slow easy walks on hard level ground. Sitting in soft chairs is the worst thing you can do. It may get better, but sooner or later, surgery is inevitable. Just get a good surgeon with decades of experience and don't be afraid to travel to a major city to get it done. Good luck!

I HAVE A PINCHED SPINE AND THEY CANT OPERATE SO ALL I CAN DO IS PAIN MANAGEMENT AND IT HAS PRETTY MUCH BROUGHT MY FISHING TO A HALT BUT IAM HOPING I CAN GO NEXT WEEKEND IF ALL WORKS OUT
NEVER KNEW REAL PAIN TIL MY BACK WENT OUT.

People can't understand this kind of pain until they have gone through it or has it. I fight this 24/7 and like you said some days it will put a complete stop on your plans. Hope you get better soon Ray.

Hate to hear about your back Ray. Sometimes we have something to bother us but we still function and work our way through it. Seem's like if you got back problem it shuts down the whole body. I had surgery in 2000 and mind bothers me so bad sometimes that it look's like more surgery is coming. Anyway hope u start feeling better Ray.

I hope you get to feeling better Ray! My Dad has been having similar issues with sciatic nerve pain as well as arthritis in his lower back and neck. It's been a painful endeavor for him.

I seem to get sciatic nerve problems when I am prepping for our major out of town fishing trips. Mainly from moving big tackle bags and coolers by myself. Then sitting in the vehicle on a 12 hour drive seems to result in me barely being able to walk by the time we get to our destination. Unfortunately I'm the boat captain for the trip and the other guys are pretty lost if I don't go along, so laying out a day isn't an option. So I had to figure out a way to somewhat manage the issue so I can function.

I found the sciatic nerve pain didn't really have as much to do with my back as it did with extreme tightness in my hamstring. I know it sounds weird but if you talk to therapist they can confirm this. I got a stertching bnad so I can lay on the floor and loop the band over my foot and pull my leg up and get a really long and slowly progressing hamstring stretch. Then I ice my lower back after stretching and as soon as I get back in from fishing. The combination of stretching and ice seems to help more than any muscle relaxer or pain pill. May be worth a try.

Well there was no fishing on the agenda today. I have a wonderful chiropractor that has always been up front with what he can and cannot help.
Maybe once a year I'd irritate something in my lower back and he could fix me up in one or two visits.
He's been treating this with heat, stretching and muscle stimulation. True to his style though, he told me if I wasn't much better by Wednesday after this morning's session I probably needed to get checked by an orthopedic doctor to see if I have a hip issue.
So we'll see what's next.

Ray, I have been having that problem now for the last four to five weeks and over a period of a couple of year off and on. I am going tomorrow to a pain specialist after referral from my orthopedic doctor. First appointment was to identify the problem and then plan what's needed to get relief. I will be given a shot under the x-ray in the back left side of my hip. I hope it works for me. I've had this even when I was having knee's replaced. Way to long putting up with the pain. I stretch my leg with a rope and elastic band. It helps but pain keeps coming back. I know your pain as they would say! I certainly hope you get relief because it really sucks to have it. I seem to think mine is eventually turning into a hip replacement also! Good luck on your plan of attack! :highfive

One of my friends had that same shot at a pain center here in town. He said it eliminated about 95% of the pain.That's my next call if it isn't much better by Wednesday.
How do you use the stretch band? Lay on your back and loop over your foot? Then what?

I feel for you, I suffer every day, my fishing is on the somewhat better days.

Ray, put the band around the middle of foot and bend the knee back, pull the band tight and extent your leg and repeat. It puts pressure on the muscles. I also use a rope around the middle of the foot and lay flat of back and pull the rope until my foot touches my rear end. It helps but the pain returns shortly and effect walking only moderately and then after a while it's back to pain for me. Can't stand and can't sit long without it hurting. Hope you get relief!

Thanks Ron. I have an appointment with a pain specialist Doctor at 9 Wednesday. If he can't help I may just tell them to shoot me. I'm no better than a lame horse right now.

I know but don't give up. I just had my shot at 10:30 this morning, it is about 80 % pain free right now. Dr. V told me to take it easy the pain shot will numb the area for a couple of hours and the steroids will kick in and start the job of relieving the inflammation. I go back in two weeks for the second shot and consultation. He gave me a copy of the ex-ray and showed me what I'm fighting. I got lots of inflammation between the joint walls. Caused by stress and heavy lifting or pushing. Could be from a fall. That sounds more like my problem falling. Mine is inflammation and not sciatic even though it feels like it. I hope your doctor can fix you up. The procedure is not bad at all. Good luck SeaRay. :highfive

I had 3 ruptured disk back in 93. My whole left leg was completely numb. Doctor said he could fix it. Went in hospital bout 6:00 a.m. Woke up bout 11:00. I knew immediately it was fixed. It only bothers me if I do something real stupid. Amazing what they can fix now. Hang in there Ray ! We gotta go back to that eatin place again before they shoot ya !

OK guys. John I guess you taking about the BBQ buffet after Lake Murray perch jerk. My buddy Harry got a cooler full Monday so let me get this leg cleared up and we can hit Murray and the BBQ.

Ron, is your doctor V with orthodox carolina? If so he's worked on me several times. Nice guy, the injection worked for a couple weeks the 1st time, next he did 2 shots worked for 6 months. Next time didn't work.Did the surgery . Still have some pain, doing pt to strengthen my lower back

Yes, It is! He is a nice guy for sure. Hate your shots did hold out for you. Hopefully mine will. I'll go back if not. He at least after a couple of years going to other dr. did get me some relief! :cheers2

Totally my fault. Next time I'll tie your boat to mine. Right now I'm dealing with nausea from these drugs they got me on. I've never tolerated steroids and painkillers well, so I've traded pain for nausea. Some deal huh?

hey fellers!!! sorry I haven't been on hear for a while been trying to get some life issues in order. I see some of you are having sciatica problems I had a problem couple years ago had a back operation that fixed my back 100% but sciatica wouldn't heal up until a friend told me about cbd oil, started taking it and now for about a year I have no pain from that nerve unless like John said= I do something stupid it sort of messed up my coumadin but my Dr, said don't quit taking it that they would work adjusting the med. so they would work together. it takes a little time to get to work but it was well worth the time it took (about 2 or 3 weeks to start feeling better and now for about a year almost pain from sciatica nerve. anyway I hope you all find relief from the pain == I`ve been there and done that and it aint no fun. hope to start fishing more and see you all no the water soon take care UNCLE REMUS.

Tell me more about CBD oil. What kind, how much etc? My neighbor sells it at his store. Ingest, rub on or smoke??LOL

Check out Infla 650, it is a herbal. My sister Lillie swears by it. Comalander came to Rock Hill to buy his wife some of it. Don't know about her results with it. It may work for you. It's all a gamble as you know. :dono
