Sunk some brush this a.m.

I’m pretty new to crappie fishing, about 6 months in now and definitely addicted! I made a couple of brushpiles from an idea I saw on hereAttachment 358445my boat isn’t quite big enough to transport the piles already assembled some this worked nicely. I took 2 with me and assembled them on the lakeAttachment 358446i sunk them on a point in about 13 fow just before it drops off to 40 ft into the river channel. Hopefully they’ll hold some fish!Attachment 358447 Attachment 358448 my side images kinda suck. Lol. I’m still learning

You did good ! I like the idea how you put them together on the water ! If you take 1 or 2 every chance you get you’ll have plenty places to fish before long!

use osage orange also called hedge for your brush it lasts a long long time maybe longer then any other kind.

Yes sir! I’m definitely building more and gonna sink them in different depths until I figure out what they like at different times of the year. The north end of this lake has a lot of standing timber but is pretty shallow, most of the south end was cleared before filling and is deeper water. This is the area I’m concentrating on, thinking if there’s not a lot of other cover the fish will definitely use what I put out.

Not sure that I have any Osage orange around me, I’ll have to check... I used pecan limbs, just because I have an abundance of pecan trees in my yard so it was easy to cut limbs the size that I needed

osage orange will have big green balls ,softball sized this time of year and thorns on the limbs. they used the trees for wind breaks on property lines in illinois .they were also used for fence posts .

Welcome aboard. My preference is bamboo as it lasts a long time, the crappie love it, and it allows you to pull the hung jig out most of the time. We have lots of boo around my area, not sure about yours. Good luck!

horse apple trees , proliferated by native americans , best wood for a bow they say .
osage orange in the actual name , they are all over texas and originated from Oklahoma I think is what I heard .
it is hard as rocks though and if you find one in a lake it will likely be a crappie hangout in Texas .
I would say you should put your limbs right in the concrete instead of holders as it might get pulled out by a braid fisherman .
and if it were me I would make the spot you are working look like a hedge row along that drop off or a real large pile like a complex .

Yes sir that’s what I know em as. Horse apple trees, I’ve seen a few around my area but all on private property that I don’t have permission to cut.
The only reason I didn’t put them straight in the concrete was to make it easier to transport, they are attached with stainless screws through the pvc into the limbs so hopefully they won’t pull out.
I like the hedge row idea! If these hold some fish I’m definitely going to use that!

these here things will give you more alone time on the water soon to drop brush I bet .
I wont be on the water near as much as I want to after seeing a big ten right before rifle season myself .
or at least until he hits my freezer anyway :Rofl

Those brushpiles will hold Crappie. Wise to concentrate on the cleared area of the lake. Crappie follow the Shad, they are always look for a new temporary Home.

I prefer bamboo also but it all will work.

I’m down in south Texas, Victoria area..
seems like most here prefer bamboo, guess I’m going on a hunt for a bamboo patch!

I actually planted some boo on my property line about 3-4 years ago, I cut a piece from a patch I found while vacationing and planted it. I must’ve gotten the slowest growing bamboo know to man. Lol. I planted 1 piece, now there’s about 6-7 pieces growing but the biggest one is about 3 foot tall and big around as a pencil

someone somewhere has a stand of boo they would love you to thin out .
boo is strange stuff though , when its leaved up lots of small fish will be all over it .
when the leaves go away a few better fish with hang around it sometimes .
but in the end real large crappie seem to prefer more substance as cover and want heavier limbed cover in my experience .
hardwoods of larger diameters if you want to find a dream fish , smaller diameters if you want to load the boat is my thoughts .

Sounds like I’m gonna have to sink a few different kinds of cover, give myself and the fish some options! Thanks for the advice, I’ve learned quite a bit reading through your posts, right now I can usually find a few fish but I’m far from having them figured out. Lol

A. Really good tree for brush piles is mesquite, it takes very little weight to sink it and will last a long time

That’s a nice fish! Hopefully I’ll have a chance to check my pile this weekend, If I can pull one like that off of it I’ll be happy!

I just put an eye bolt in the concrete with a big fender washer on the end to keep it from pulling out. Once I was where I wanted to sink them I put the rope through and doubled it, let them down to the bottom and pulled one end of the rope back through the eye bolt

Do not use a rope. Spot lock where I want it then pitch it over the side. Once settled troll back over it and mark a waypoint on its location.

I used a rope thinking I could lower it down and make sure it was standing upright, put I’m pretty sure they would have stood upright had I just tossed them over

you can zip tie a gallon jug to the top of most stuff and it with hold it upright in many cases . but keep in mind sometimes brush on its side is more naturally occurring and it often holds fish quite well .

The lake I fish is an irrigation impoundment. There is no brush in the lake and very little structure, mostly rock/gravel. EBID will not let anyone put in brush. Thus, our crappie are roamers. It is very difficult to fish, especially as EBID Draws the water down during the growing season.

Back in early '90's I lived on a 27 acre pond (private) I was the only one that lived on pond, had 14' & 10' aluminum boats in Back yard on waterTM's an batteries on porch. There were 10 permits sold each yr. Same people every yr. I started sinking x-mas trees, cause there was lots of crappie. I would lower buckets with trees with 25 tests fishing line , then cut line with 1 ft. of slack, clip on round cheap plastic bobbers to mark. Because I'd bring friends and kid's fishing, if I wasn't home I'd tell'em cast to floating bobbers. Went on vacation 2 weeks, came home all bobbers were missing , so I go out and find them about 20 spots with 2 trees, set hook in them with new bobbers. That weekend ol-timer bout 75 , that had been fishing that pond before I was born, tells me, hey someone keeps marking my hot spots with bobbers ! Ha Ha Ha
