I have squirrel tails, if needed for making of hair jigs. PM me.
I heard (squirrel) hair jigs are very productive in some of the northern states. I'd like to try them down here (Louisiana). I'm sure I'm just behind on this and many of the members use them. Can any of you guys share a picture or two of some of your favorite ties or tell me if you are in the LA and are currently using them. A Courville, I'm going to PM you to see if I can purchase a few tails so I can try tying a few.
Queyit,
Squirrel tails do good. Only problem is most of the tail are grey or brown. Which will still work, I just prefer fluorescent colors. While you can, and I have, dyed them only so much of those colors take while your still left with mostly brown. If set on tying with hair, I’d suggest kip tail already dyed...

I dont care much for the dyed tails as they don't take the color very well like Adam has already stated
I've got a black and red squirrel tail jig I make also. I just can't find the pic right nowAttachment 358598

Nice, Very Cool!!
The man who makes "Ax-Head Jigs" is Mr. Leonard Woodall. He will be at the Crappie.com Gathering at Lake D'Arbonne. He lives in Dubberly, La.

Very nice looking jigs
Ok, I get the jest of what the ties look like. Micropterus salmoides thanks for the kip/calf tail suggestions. My nephew told me they killed about 12 squirrels last week and I can get a few tails this weekend. I'm going to try to tie a few with the and get back to you all. Thanks again for the responses and pictures.
I like to fish hair jigs when the water is clear and cold.
Had good luck in the past with black with a mallard green head or grey with the same green head. Black crappie especially seem to really go for it.
My nephew provided me with a few tails from his hunting trip. The wet and very cold weather has given me an opportunity to tie my first hair jigs. Heck, really my first ties since trying to tie some cap spiders for brim fishing a few years ago. My phone camera isn't the best but here are 3 in 1/16th and 3 smaller 1/48th. I'm going to try the 1/16ths the first break in the weather. The micro 1/48th tipped with a small piece of worm bouncing off the bottom should work well for those chinquapin I hunt in March.

Nice!! Great Job!!
How long did you dry the hair out. I saved a tail off a buck I’m drying it out now.

Thanks guys. I’m gonna continue to practice in hopes of finding one or two patterns that work best.
The tails are fresh, killed about two weeks ago. I’m using one for sample tying and I will let the others continue to dry out. I was told they should be completely dried out in 2-4 weeks. Although we are only using the hair, I would think a bucks tail might take longer to dry out therefore eliminating the smell.
