I am not positive, but maybe the head was not hot enough? I use an alcohol burner to heat my jig heads to paint and I developed my speed and count, meaning I count at my speed how long I leave the head in the flame and then dip and swish side to side fast and out tapping any loose off. Then just because I'm hard headed I pass it back through the flame for just a pass. Then I use a sharpened tooth pick to clear paint from eye.

I'm not sure on the powder paint problem but I am curious about this bar used to hold the jigs. I've seen that used frequently. Can I ask what it's called and where you purchase that from?
Is this before or after baking? If before your not heating head enough. Pass one back over heat source to see if it doesn’t smooth out. If after could be a problem of not hot enough or some problem I haven’t seen with paint.
Moisture in the powder paint causing it to clump
Tj tackle. Can’t remember price but wasn’t bad
I’ve tried different times on heat. Using a heat gun on high. I’m wondering if my gun is wearing out I’m using 10 count I use to use a 6-7

It’s flowing real nice in bed it has been in factory container since I got it. When I’m done I put it back in jar and seal it up. If it flows good how can I check for moisture?

It’s before baking. I’m going to try and heat it longer and see what happens. I got the jigs off eBay I’m wondering if they could have something on them from when they where poured?

Not enough coverage and not enough heat.
No big deal, reheat the same heads and dip again.
Sometimes I double dip [emoji51]
With the clamps like that, you really can’t over paint.

I’ll try more heat and see if that helps. I appreciate y’all help.

Suspect it is something on the jig heads? Try some different ones. Same with powder paint. Only way I know to isolate it to the component level
I thought that too so I cleaned some with alcohol and got same results. I’m trying a different color now to see if it’s the paint.

There are a few colors that I've run into that are HEAVY and don't take well - take a tablespoon of clear powder paint and put it in and it should flow for you. Shake it up and stir it after dipping a couple of heads.
First you need to get a cheap oven thermometer and check temp in oven. If using toaster oven most are off by quite a bit. Cook at 350 for 30 minutes. But I suspect you got some heads with poor quality dirty lead. Go buy some plain heads at Walmart and try them.
I know you don't like them, but what do the fish think?
ClearCreek
I checked that it was off so I adjusted for that. I’ll go 30 minutes for now on and try that.

It’s flowing great in the fluid bed. I’m thinking I got some jigs that have something in them causing the paint not to stick.

I’m a little ocd and when things don’t work like there supposed to it drives me a little crazy. Hard to explain yes I know the fish won’t mind and I sure wish I didn’t lol. It’s one of those things I guess.

Is the paint hard or will it flake off?
One way to test the paint is if you have a nail or anything cheap and metal that you could heat up and dip in the powder paint to see how well it actually covers. If it covers well that will tell you it's something with the jig heads.
Attachment 358137i finally got some that are decent. I heated them longer and held them in the paint longer. I don’t know usually it in and out of the paint but the only I can get coverage is to keep in the paint a few seconds then tap the excess off

The pink ones look like they weren't hot enough. Do a count in your head while over the heat source and add a second at a time until you get it right. I swish one time around in a circle to get each side evenly.
For me:
Perfect temp is when you heat, dip, and take it out and it turns from grainy to smooth melted within a second of coming out of the jar. Coming out smooth is also fine and is an easier temp to reach consistently.
Coming out thick and clumpy means too hot, and/or in the paint too long.
In your case, coming out powdery and not covered means too cold so the powder that came into contact with the jig didn't melt and stick.
Coming out grainy but covered should smooth over to a perfect finish within a second or two if you stick it back over your heat source after dipping, and you can add a second to your heat count to prevent this extra step. Sometimes it will smooth out in the oven, but not always.
If temp control doesn't fix it then the only other idea I have is oily/dirty jigheads. Try cleaning with acetone or alcohol. Other option would be some bad powder paint.
Thanks appreciate the help. I heated longer and keeper them in paint a little longer seemed to help.

Mike I use a different count for most every size head. !/32 I can count to 6, 3 on each side and dip, but know how fast or slow you count make a big difference and on a 1/32 you could easy melt the lead right off the hook, lol! On 1/16, I could 4 on each side and on 1/8 I count to 4 (3) times and 1/4 oz about the same as 1/8, close anyway.
Remember I am in the flame and not just hot air making a lot of noise, lol!

You can reheat the carefully, before baking, and it usually will smooth the paint out.

Starting to think heat gun ain’t working right. I think the heat element is going in and out so I’m thinking I heated longer but it was cooling instead of heating. Fan is working but the element is turning off and on. Lol

Sounds like time for a new heat gun.
Yep

I use a propane torch. I just use the short "fat" propane bottles used for Coleman stoves, etc instead of the tall ones from the hardware store which makes it more stable. I've got a heat gun too and did try it but the propane torch is much faster. I hold a 32nd ounce jig in the flame for about 2-3 seconds.

I use the one from Barlow's Tackle as it's the best I have found. Have to be careful with how tight the lid is on, but the wick and all is good size. Tried a very nice stainless one and it had a smaller wick and I decided fast to go back to the one from Barlow's! Here is a link! Barlow'''s Tackle - Shopping Cart
