I feel they are important and change till I have a strong bite.
Do you think it's important to change colors and what process do you use to determine what colors to use?
I talk about it a bit in this vid.....

Trying to figure out colors out of the gazillion combinations you can use is like trying to crack a combination lock without the combination!!
If I could only have 10 colors I would "not" be a happy man.....:dono
I could probably limit myself to 10........ but why? I do catch an awful lot on gray ghost, chartreuse/white or white jigs. Those are my top 3.
With having livescope its proven that color is a small factor VS Size and Presentation!

The boat I fished on yestdy has live scope but the unit wasn't workn..... They were worried we would be at a disadvantage but i knew with the SI unit i could get us on fish..... And we caught fish just fish until EZ found the color the bigger fish wanted.... When I put a similar color jig on i was on the big'uns....
My point to this story is what you have confidence in and put time in to learn to use will get you on more and bigger fish.....
In my opinion live scope is no where near as important as folks try to make it......
In my opinion a person that know how to operate a SI unit will always be on fish......I've seen a lot of live scope guys locked onto seeing inactive fish and spending all day try'n to make them bite.....
We all have the choice to decide what tools to use and live scope ain't one of the tools I choose.....
Way to expensive to see blobs move around, in my opinion.....
In my opinion color matters a lot and can be the difference in catchn no fish, just fish or good fish.........:cheers2
Okay remember you ask, lol!
I am going to talk Spring and maybe Fall if you have the right spot to longline. First let me start using spring water depths and I believe the main crappie hold out in something like 6' to 7 1/2' water depth and some go in to the very shallow water to lay their eggs, but then back to that holding depth. So I try to fish where the most are and then it's a matter of color and how clear or stained the water is. For this lake and my personal way to help make it easier I use the 3' down as my clear or stained depth. So if I can see my jig 3' or more down the water is clear and less is stained, but then also how stained?
With that in mind I have a number of jigs I use depending on this 3' test. Now if I can see my jig 3' or more down I really like Silver/Silver/FL Blue or Silver/Blue/White, but their are more that I like too.
Then if I can not see it 3' down I am going to Chartreuse/Blue/Chartreuse or Chartreuse/Black/Chartreuse and again there are others too.
Then lets say it rained yesterday or last night hard and now our Clear water is super stained and you can see the jig down maybe just one foot or less, then I want my jig that is Flame Red/Chartreuse & Black/Hot Orange!
There are some that I feel may work in both the first two, clear and stained I like a Silver FL Yellow/FL Blue and feel this will work maybe in both? See picture for some of these combos.

Couldn't find the Silver/Chart/FL Blue fast enough to show it, but when you get some Chartreuse Crystal Antron that is not so much the Green Chartreuse, that is the color!
I failed to mention the Flame Red/Kelly Green/FL Yellow jig, but it's a darn good one too!

Excellent write up Skip and sound like your going low contrast in clear water and high contrast in murky waters.....
I tie on both regardless of water clarity and sometimes it works opposite......
I fish the deeper depths just outside the spawning grounds in spring and I feel the big females don't go shallow until nightfall......
Thanks for the info sir.......
I try and view colors as either light or dark. I don't get too hung up on color itself unless im in ultra clear waters. 90% of the time im using green yum twister tails. I concentrate more on depth and action. I fish lots of stained waters though so.
Don't fix it if it's not broke......I only fish stained waters too when I compare them to some of those northern gin clear lakes......
"In my opinion" there's no one thing that works all the time when it comes to color.....
Your spot on with the depth and action being an important factor also.....
Thank you SK, much appreciated!

Yes he is. I wonder sometimes how he does it I try and cut mine the same and there all a little different lol

my rendition of colors runs like this .
natural with something flashy or sparkly if its sun up high and the water is "kinda" clear ,possibly with a blue or silver tint
white or chart if the water is turbid and or stained and its daylight .
I like orange early in the day and or in muddy looking waters .
then the darker greys fall into play in deep water along with black and in the dark as well.
I add contrast or try it when solids don't seem to get bit .
but quite often I find that what I think they want isn't the ticket at all and its some kind of break all the rules thing the crappie like to do .
on a final note sometimes its about size more than color and that can play a huge role in if you ketch fish for sure .
and then ….toss all the advice and rinse and repeat as there is a day when it just aint happening ….
you know them days you just aint tuned in ,your karma is messed up or you aint holding your mouth right
I got a bud that will tell you to lay the rod down and don't touch it when you are in a funk .
he swears crappie can sense it ….:Rofl
btw ...second belly spin/pony head from the bottom Skip …..mmmmm I would bite that one myself
and the bottom one is my second choice in that line up ….mighty fine stuff :highfive
A lot of folks want to hear rules and laws these crappie feesh abide by and there just aren't any...... You and I have talked about this color topic several times and come to the same conclusion..... "If what your using ain't workn tie another jig on until you find the one they will hit".......
That is the rule and law we have to abide by to be successful.....
I have seen where I'll be ready to move from a pile, tie on a different jig and put several in the boat off that pile.....
Hey those throw down poles will put feesh in tha boat.....
crappie don't read the crappie rules book and don't have fingers to search on google either is my thoughts :Rofl
Thanks guys, mush appreciated! I will say there are a few that seem to work no matter what lake and really no matter what the water is doing.
Silver/FL Yellow/FL Blue
Silver Blue/White (of course in soft plastic tube days the Blue and White is hard to beat!)
Of course that is a short list of these.
Also that 2nd from the top during the spawn after a rain and your fishing really shallow over beds, that is really hard to beat!

I catch a lot of crappie in the Spring on blue and white, like Skip's bottom jig.
Both staging and when they are on the beds, even in low light conditions.
