Windy crappie morning 100819
I fished this morning with an old friend and the conditions were less than ideal, although the air temp was wonderful. Low 60’s greeted us at Wolftever ramp around 7:45 and off we went. It was windy with a NNE wind that was reportedly 9 mph, but looked more like 12-15 mph.
We started fishing docks and then a bluff when the docks failed to produce a bite. The bluffs didn’t produce either and the wind was knocking us around and I told my friend, Howard that I knew a cove that would block the north wind off and make fishing more pleasant even if the fish didn’t want to bite.
So a short boat ride later we pulled into this cove that I knew had brush and that I had waypoints on. I eased the boat along looking at the 3 or 4 brush piles and they had fish on and around and buried up in them. We had to resort to dead sticking our panfish assassins in 17 feet of water to get any bites. But we did manage to catch 9 crappie over the course of the next hour and a half.
We only had 3 keepers out of the 9 fish with the biggest being 12”. But it was a good time of fellowship with a dear friend who had recently lost his wife. He said at the beginning that he didn’t care whether we caught fish or not, but he just wanted to enjoy the time on the water. We did.
