No bonus late doe season here this year either, went from 8 bonus tags back down to 2 now since a couple years ago.. glad to see it go back down but hate to see EHD again.. been smelling dead deer a lot driving down our back roads around here and seeing fawns out in fields w/o the old does with them.
Got a pic of one doe on trail cam 3 weeks ago all skin and bones and rib cage showing badly. Until we get a hard frost, without a lot of rain, it’s going to get worse especially in this heat and dryness. :(
I've seen more dead fawns on the roads than I've ever seen.
is that what it takes for the dnr to finaly lower the doe slaughter? about time!
Friend of mine Sunday saw a large doe floating in East Fork of the White River dead and wife saw a Skelton of a alive doe yesterday down the hill from our house that could barely walk. With all the backwaters and swamps I live near, it’s wicked here.
Shame so many deer have to die that way.
Guys at local, bait shop in Williams, has found 6 deer along banks of White River dead. EHD is a virus type disease that burns deer up,with a fever and drives them to water.
When driving to Raccoon yesterday there was one area by the creek running out of Raccoon that you could smell at least 3 areas that had dead deer close to the road..they have a distinct smell.
opening day of bow season, high of 90 degrees as of now with high 80`s for the week..glad our climate isn't changing:)
I just got done moving and re-hanging a 18’ 120 lb ladder stand today by myself, trashed is the word, take bug and suntan lotion with you! :Rofl I am. Lol
I used to look forward to the 1st day of the season but I just cant get into sitting in a tree when its above 70 deg, even less when you have to have a thermacell to keep the skeeters off you..dont think I would enjoy deep south hunting much.
Dont forget the camo shorts/bandanna:)
Found a couple of dead deer today around water. Smell is rank when ya hone in on them. Seeing lots of bambies by themselves as we drive around without their mommas. EHD is wacking them big time. Glad we finally had cold last nite and ice on car windows this morning and frost warning tonite might kill the midge flys out and save the deer. Time will tell.
Found 2 more dead today.
Anyone doing any crappie fishing? A friend of mine said he was catching some nice big crappie at Patoka lake in shallow water. We have some frost the other night down here in Warrick County, IN. Maybe the cold weather will kill some of those dang daytime biting mosquitoes. I've been getting eaten while sitting out on the back poarch in the middle of the day. Tiger Mosquitoes bite during the day light hours.
hopefully the frost will get rid of midges, a lot of deer have died around here.. I did see a nice buck walking along the edge of hay field yesterday morning.
We had ice on the car windows sat. morning and heavy frost and hopefully did kill some midge flys out. Warm weather will bring the hatch back tho. Now my count within couple miles of the house is 6 for the weekend and when the wind is out of the east, the stench of death is heavy if we are outside. We have been hammered here and dnr is saying green co is slammed hard as well. What will really take what deer we have left is the heavy kill during the better hunting season coming up. Next year will be miserable hunting due to how many deer we will have left. Our area is heavily hunted. Even the kids miss school to hunt.
harvest numbers by county will be interesting to see. I bet it will be bad. maybe they will lower harvest numbers even more then!
1 buck 1 doe let the herd grow!
They won’t let the herd grow due to State Legislature several years ago giving DNR a ultimatum to take the herd down. Politics by Farm Bureau organizations and Insurance lobbyists money rules how our herd is managed thru politics. Can’t fault DNR. :twocents
yeah if Insurance/Farmers have their way we wouldn't have any deer left. Our deer population where I live Parke county(my area) is way down.. used to in winter could drive my 2 mile square on roads where I live and count 150-200 deer out in the fields.. I could hunt every day and see 10-15 deer every sit now luck to see 2-3 for the most part a lot of times zero.. this year I'm probably going to fish till the middle of bow season and just bow hunt the 1st part of the rut, knee is messed up right now and cant hardly walk anyway..
The bonus deer permits being so high hurt deer around here, there were guys killing/filling all their tags for no other reason then they just like to kill deer.
While they didn't waste the deer(gave away)I just dont agree with killing them for pleasure of doing it, kill them to eat and leave rest alone.. jmho though.
its unfortunate that hunters cant joint together and limit the deer they take for a more bountiful future. never work around my area though. the farmer around me said he would eliminate all deer and the turkey if he could. my cutting back will only benefit the people he lets hunt.
ill fault who sets the rules. whatever their reason they still make the choice.
I personally think your going to see a decrease in the harvest totals and if the harvest totals are close to last year it will mean tons of little deer (yearlings and bambies) killed affecting numbers for next year. I just check my deer trail cams today for the past three weeks and only 50 pics are same 6 deer, all small bambies except small 8 and med doe and this time last year, 40 or more diff. Deer on the trail cams with 6 diff large racked bucks and 3 times as many more pics with more movement out of them. I am considering not even hunting and normally I hunt the last 2 weekends of bow, all of gun and muzzloading and late season all the way tur first weekend when it’s out. This is ugly to say the least here.
I have seen some some big does with fawns but a lot more fawns with no big doe with them. I did see a really nice buck walking edge of a hay field just down road from my house the other day. My neighbor has at least 10 or more people hunting less then 100 acres of woods.. 6 of those are hunting 50 acres behind my house. Sometimes they are all back there at one time during gun season which is scary as heck.
Is EHD the same thing as CWD? We have that now in Tennessee

I never complain as I have a more than a couple of thousand acres of rugged hilly, rocky, steep, cut over woods with elevations of 900 plus ft. I seldom see another hunter, but a real pain to get a downed deer out of. Sometime 1.5 to 2 miles from nearest road also. :ThumbsUp
If your signed up at DNR’s website like I am and a ton of other hunters we get emails from DNR and information about hunting and fishing. One email I received from DNR was if you harvested a deer and it was thought to be diseased, call them and they would direct the hunter to the nearest station as DNR would like to test them by taking samples from the harvested deer. A friend of mine bow hunting today south of Patoka Lake in Dubois Co. shot a doe and when he got out of the stand, found it to thin and sick looking, called DNR and they directed him to the nearest biological check station at Patoka Lake. He gutted the doe, dragged it and loaded it into his truck. When he got to the check station, they wanted to charge him 62.00 to have it tested. Needless to say, he told them where to stick the deer. Just a warning if you want to accommodate Our DNR’s request on having deer to check for diseases. :twocents
that's low wow! I wonder how many people tell them the same thing. like feed the hungry if you pay the butcher. I don't even pay a butcher for my own deer.
He burnt a tag to accommodate DNR on the phone, argued with the I will call it the biological disease check station after they wanted to charge the 62 bucks. Told them he would never bring them another sample. Told them he was trashing the sick punny deer and not eating it, then they wanted and took a sample anyhow when finding out he wasn’t paying. And so he asked them just out of curosity how long it would be before they got the test results back and they would email them to him also. It would be after first of Jan. Now I am saying, would I want to store wild game in my freezer 4 to 5 months to get test results back before deciding to eat??? This is our DNR.
sounds about rite. I don't think the idiots at the top think these things threw. they don't consider how we will react or more likely just don't give a rats bass. that's government for ya.
Found out last nite, they didn’t test cause he wouldn’t pay. 14 more found over weekend dead along white river and creeks in Martin Co.
man sounds like you guys are getting hit really hard down there. My neighbor told me he found 2 on his property in August but has been too busy to check all of his properties so more then likely a bunch more dead. He owns a ton of ground/woods.
Seems pretty low they would try to charge you to check your deer for diseases when I thought that was the whole point of buying licenses etc.
You buy a license to pay a tax for hunting. Once upon a time it went to game management. Not so much anymore.
