Radios & Fishing

When I go fishing, I go to enjoy the sport, listen to nature and "feel" the overall experience - QUIETLY. I find it very rude to have to listen to other boats playing who knows what kinds of music. Walt & I experienced this during our last trip. Fortunately, after an hour or so, his batteries must have died, because the "music" stopped.

Am I the crazy one for being agitated at having to listen to someone playing a radio while you are fishing and wanting to listen to "nature"? There's a time a place for everything. Fishing & radios do not mix - in my opinion. :)

I feel exactly the same way! All I want to hear is nature.

I figger if I hear another Boats Radio/boom box its too loud...same with Vehicles...

I don't even want any noise in my boat, a squeaking boat seat or someone slamming a cooler lid shut.

I love to fish but have a full time job. I usually only get to fish 3 days a month. I also love college football. I have on rare occasion tuned into my football game or a college ws game while on the water as my only time for fishing was at the same time as a game. I think it’s about like crowding on spots. There is a level of etiquette and goodwill sportsmanship required

Well, I'll be the odd guy out here and say that he should be able to enjoy his outdoor experience the way he wants to, also. I do think it is rude to have it up so loud that people a half a lake away can hear it too, but if he wants some music (or a sporting event, whatever) playing quietly in his boat, he should be entitled. Provided it is played at an appropriate level, for his boat alone to enjoy, I say go for it.

With that said, MY preference is for solitude and hearing nothing but Nature, too!

I actually kept a radio / CD player on my boat most of the time stored up front and occasionally I found myself wanting to hear some bluegrass or gospel music and or to listen to a Nascar race if it was a track that I cared anything about or a football game that cared anything about... but for the most part... I concur with most everyone else in being perfectly at peace listening to the sounds of nature. I too share in the hatred of summertime watercraft bringing all of the noises of modern civilization to the lakes, which is why I do very little fishing in the heat of summer.

To each their own. I prefer peace and quiet myself. Especially spring when all the birds are courting and carrying on. Also listen for fish activity. What I don't understand is guys spending 50 grand + for a technical poking skiff and bragging about stealth and no hull slap and then showing off the sound system he put in boat for a couple grand.

Every person has access to the outdoors. You are entitled to your enjoyments, just as others are. This the land of freedom. May be that others passion is music, with outdoors as a dressing.

common courtesy should apply from all points of view. Many times one can hear conversation from boats quite a distance away.

If not enjoying, move.

I do listen to a radio sometimes, when I am by myself, but no one else is going to hear it. I do love the quiet time on the lake, also.

I like the quiet but sometime the weather radio is on for storm warnings. Wife turns the radio on low sometimes but I frown on it. After 40 years I frown quietly.:twocents

Off and on thru out the day I play music. Usually it's older country on Pandora and on my phone not even all the way up. It helps with my tinitus to drown out the buzz. To each his own for me.

From Oct til Mar I enjoy the quietness and tranquility of my natural surroundings. Other times of the year I have no problem using a bluetooth device on my boat. I keep the volume at a minimum and pay attention to my whereabouts. Generally there is noise from wake boats with thousand watt stereos, pontoons with 15 social drinkers on board that seem to have a need to yell at each other while conversing, jet skis and the dreaded leaf blowers and mowers. George Jones and myself have drowned out a lot of background noise over the years.

I am disappointed at the general lack of respect on the water these days from all types of people and watercraft. I feel blessed to be old enough to remember when people actually loved their neighbors as themselves.

That music or even someone close to me constantly on a cell phone, talking at the top of his lungs so the other party can hear him, is no different to me than someone riding a jet ski in and out and into a cove. It amazes me how liberal many have become in the last 30 years. I understand that everyone has their own rights. I also
wonder where courtesy and respect went. It doesn't exist any more. I also wonder how my generation let these things slowly slip away. I hope I'm long gone when
this upcoming Igadget group takes control.

If I can't live without a game I stay home and watch the game. If feel a need to get away and de-stree I go fishing. No radio.

I enjoy listening to my music when fishing! But I also try and respect everyone there and listen to where only I hear it or turn it down when I’m close to people!

The key word in your statement is "quietly". I doubt few would complain if the music was played quietly. But most who use their radio do it at full volume, so everybody on the lake can hear what they call "music"

I had a radio in a couple of my boats. I only used them when I would occasionally fish a Sunday afternoon. I had to listen to dem Saints. Who Dat!!

I am not a against Radios (i always have one onboard and use it sometimes) I am against VOLUME....
when I play mine unless you in boat with me you will never hear it.....
I consider it respect for environment and others....

I took the radio out of my pontoon and its going to stay out, feel the same way hate hearing loud music out on the lake..nothing against it as long as it can only be heard in boat playing it not halfway across lake.

When I go out there it's for the outdoors. I sure don't want to hear someone's else junk. Of course I don't need it anyway. I can drive 600 plus miles and never turn the radio on. Just me. I know I'm just old. lol. I won't fish in boat with it.

I HATE hearing music when fishing! I LOVE the sound of nature! I live on I-44, it’s my backyard. It is so seldom that I am surrounded by quiet, that I will move if I can to get away from the noise! Especially if the fish aren’t cooperating!

Very interesting thread. I too have no radio in my boat. I go fishing for the peace and quiet. But here come the wake bosts blasting away. I don't go out during the summer months because of this,and the rude behavior of the people driving the boats. At work in our shop I have to listen to radios blasting away. Don't need it on the water also. Respect for others is gone. I know that others have rights also, as a VET it hurts but that's what we fought for. RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBOR AND HIS SPACE.

I prefer no music while fishing,I deal with so much noise during the rest of the week that the peace and quiet out on the water is especially nice.I dont have any problem with anybody else playing music as long as its not blasting.

I've not run into this situation.

Last comment. Anyone has the right to listen to a radio 24/7 anywhere they want to. It is not right to make me listen to it.

I haven’t either. I guess personal type watercraft don’t go well where there’s lots of Gators for one thing.
Marine radios and CBs were about as bad in my opinion. I guess cell phones eliminated much of that.

Oh how I hate that. Something else I dislike is the guys in Jon boats that don’t know how to be quiet. Sounds like they are banging a chain on the side.....lol

I find it irritating to have to listen to anyone else’s music played so loud that you can hear it long distance. The good part of that is that most are riding the river and do what I like them to do best—— go away. My wife says I can get home on the weekend and be a raving madman, but step into that boat for three hours and I’m a completely different person. Like so many so far have stated, I enjoy my time alone in the outdoors. Probably one of the reasons I fish alone as much as I do. That said, I’m entitled to my time. I don't see the need for someone else to shove his idea of cool down my throat. I don’t do that to anyone else. Start early, fish hard, usually go home earlier than I want to because the crazy people start showing up. Just my two cents. Oh yeah, no radio in my boat for a reason.

I do the same thing, don't want to hear all the noise. I will listen to it in the garage while playing around with fishing tackle. Out on the lake its me and nature. Refer to post #23

But then they can’t show off their $2,000 stereo in their boat!! I hate it too.

I’ll listen to a radio or music on my phone but it’s barely loud bough for me to hear it with it in my shirt or pants pocket. But I usually don’t have good enough cell service for it.

I can't stand the quiet, I have to have something to drown out my tinnitus. I've always got the radio on, adds to the fun and relaxation too.

My home lake doubles as a fishing lake and a party lake, you get used to it, especially in summer.

I think some guys are just way too serious out there, and far too concerned with what's happening in other boats. Just relax, do your thing, and be happy. :)

# ME TOO I've had tinnitus since 1972 and I can tell you you NEVER get used to it.

Bring on the cooler air and water temps. Those boat radios must have a thermostat. They want play much lower than 70 degrees

There was a pontoon on Grenada one day that I know was a mile away and the music was loud to me and I can't hear thunder. It won't be long before the won't either.

Way back when my old man used to take me fishing if you even spoke in the boat you caught heck for scaring the fish. I listen to a radio and catch fish. I just don't play it loud enough for it to bother other boaters. The worse are shoreline fisherman who think that the base needs to be cranked up and the music pounding enough that it sends ripples in the water.
