9-5-19 Bluegill

:mad::mad::mad: I had a lengthy report all written up, and I accidentally hit the "mystery key" on the computer, and POOF, it all disappeared !!!! :mad::mad::mad:

So, here's the cliff notes …..

Dawn, partly cloudy, with a light and variable breeze, air temp. 56 degrees, water temp. 76 degrees, target species bluegill, target depth 8 - 10 feet over 12 - 15 fow.

I was using a 1/32 oz jig head with salted shrimp, under a slip float, on a 8' crappie max pole, with a BP reel spooled with 4 lb hi-vis mono.

The gills seem to be movin back from the main body to secondary points.

FWIW ... if I know I'm going to write a long post, I always type it into an email first, and then copy and paste it here.

i think the mystery key sits back and waits for the longest , most detailed message ,,,,and then,,,,zap 56 degrees !!!!have not seen that in a long time !!!....you and i have the same brand of blue-gill , those could be the same exact ones i catch all the time...but i will not complain !!....glad to see the observers are on board and at watch !!!!....thanks for the pictures !!!!

Nice catch, 90’s here and Gills are hard to find!

Thanks for taking me back to the hills for a few minutes. I saw that same view many mornings in TN, and I miss it all the time. Beautiful first picture.

Some nice fish. Good to know where you can go to and play for a while. Some of those are colored up real nice. Bet they really shine come the spawn. Keep after em, you might find a sweet spot one day.

morning svh , not even a year being a spinning-rod fisherman yet , but it is much more fun than catfishing !! it has gotten pretty slow here , and very hot .. i go in the mornings about an hour and a half and about all i catch are blue-gill , around the size in your pictures and smaller....i still take a crappie rod and check out all the stumps and logs farther out from the bank , but have not caught a crappie or bass near them in weeks...i still catch the blue-gill along the bank , in the shade , with the slowest rod i have , a daiwa shock ultra-light , it flexes all the way down to the handle and is also the cheapest rod that i have , but it is lots of fun to catch blue-gill on...i have had luck using a beetle-spin with a 1/32 jighead with the tail of a crappie slider cut off and put on it ...i also use a 1\32 jighead with a chartreuse/silver tube body on it.....i am going to get some shrimp the next time i go to the grocery store and try your method ....hopeing for cooler weather soon and luck to you and the observers.

I hear ya ! We are the same on several points. I too go out in the morn, and eve for a couple of hours, and have not got into the crappie for a couple of months ! I've spent this summer targeting deep water bluegill, and have just started moving back to the secondary points, and, just started gettin back into the redear that are movin back as well.

Meh on the kitties, and even though I could spend all day catchin bass, I have lost interest in the LM after forever (seemingly) being a "bass man". From what I hear from the other crappie fisher on the lake, (yes, there is only one) a few slabs have been caught in the regular spots within the last few days.

Time to rethink my strategies.

I also prefer 1/32 oz jigs, but I really love fishin them under a slip float with meat, or Gulp baits. I've refined my tactics, and have had very good luck with this method lately.

We also have roving schools of bass and bluegill mixed, that seem to love the sun, "poppin the top" out in open water in the blazin sun ! These schools are terribly fun to chase around, and depending on the size of lure thrown at them, either species can be caught quite regularly. The limiting factor is how long I want to run around in the sun !

I've found the smallest (salad) shrimp, cut into 5 or 6 pieces, and heavily salted works best, (for me) and "sun cooked" beats the microwaved shrimp for the ability to stay on the hook better. Much better.

svh , thanks for the tips on the shrimp , i was just gonna salt em and put em in the ice-box....in the summer , the mouth of my slew is so overgrown with vegetation that it is very hard to get out into the river , so i cannot fish the deeper water yet...but i will in the winter and spring....sometimes if there are enough bass fishermen coming in , they will keep a trail open , but no boats have been in here for a couple of months...maybe next summer i can go out enough to keep one open....there are red-ear in here in a few places when it is cooler...and i forgot that i did catch one bass about 12-14 inches , right outside a long stretch of vegetation on the shallower side of the slew about a week ago........but anyway , good luck and will type with you next time .
