for crappie fishing and why?
I like suffix elite hi-vis yellow in 4#. Mainly
because with the correct drag setting
it will handle the occasional accidental fish
that is much heavier than 4#.

Single pole jig fishing I will only fish braid usually 15-20lb test... trolling I use 8lb mono slime line has become my favorite!

I've been using 4lb BerkleyVanish Fluorocarbon Fishing Line. On one setup I use a 10# braid backer and then a swivel about 6 feet up with the Vanish below that to a Gamakatsu hook, usually pink or chartreuse.

The lines I depend on across the board are Power Pro Superslick8, Trilene XL, Berkley Vanish Flourocarbon. Lb test depends on quarry and conditions.
I use 4 lb whatever is cheapest for jigging and drop shot fishing. Lately I have been using Berkley fluorocarbon.
I spider rig with 8lb Vicious
Cast and single/Long Pole with with Power Pro Braid...anywhere from 10-20lb
I weave three strands of #6 Uni line in Pearl, Moss and Blue if I am wanting to use 4 lb line. Will add one strand of Pale Red if I want 6lb. So I guess that makes me a braid guy. Of coarse, I also forge my own hooks.....all sickle red.
Does that put us anywhere near 30 different lines??? ;-)
Walt & I are strictly ultra-light fishermen. The waters we fish are conducive to this style of fishing. We do not have to contend with fishing brush piles, weeds or other obstructions. And we mainly side pull jigs over deep (20'+) water basins.
I prefer 2# test Fireline Crystal (.5 lb. diameter) for my main line, with a 2# test fluorocarbon leader. I join this with the Alberto knot and have been using it for quite a few years now. Add to that the fact that I've taken some really big fish on this set up. I also have a "heavy" jig rig for 1/8 & 1/4 oz. jigs. For this I use 4# test Fireline Crystal for the main line with a matching 4# test fluorocarbon leader. This is a good set up when the fish are down deep.
A couple of our rigs have straight 2# test Trilene XL as well. But I prefer the sensitivity of the fused braid, with the abrasion resistance of the fluorocarbon leader, over any straight mono or fluoro lines. JMO mind you! Whatever gives you the confidence you need to get the job done - that's what you should be using!
Not sure what brand rods Walt is using these days, but I'm a big fan of the B n' M lineup. And I really like to match these with the $6920 Pflueger President spinning reel too. Mine are 7' & 9' models.

Troll with 6lb hi vis and cast 1/32 and 1/16 with 4lb hi vis. I use a BPS store brand called Offshore Angler Tight Lines. 3200 plus yards of 4lb for about $8. 6# Mr. Crappie Hi-Vis Yellow for me. Used to be I could see that clear line pretty good, not so much any more.
Power Pro 10/2 yellow with Seaguar flouro leader, Suffix 4 & 6 # hi vis or Trilene XL 4# CBF. As you see I'm still experimenting with stuff I have in inventory.
PP 10/2 yellow braid for vertical and casting. Strike the line with a black magic marker from the jig about 18 in. up. Stren Crappie 4 lb. for slip float. I use all my old heavy mono from my bass reels for spider rigging rods and 8 or 6 lb new mono for the leaders.
Crappie fishing, 6# Ande is what I used getting started. Only because I couldn't find any 4# Ande! Now I got a new Ultra Light rod and reel for crappie and I got some 4# Kastking mono. Stuff seem's as good as Ande but the Kastking stuff is yellow! I have actually used line other than Ande before but can't remember when it was. The thing I liked about Ande is it is less expensive than the other but then it only does one thing good,,,,it catch's fish!
Stren 4lb Hi Viz crappie mono. Less memory than Vicious and Mr. Crappie line and smaller diameter than the two. Use Stren Crappie mono for slip bobbers and fishing with Pops braid tangles with him are things of nightmares. Got my friend hooked on Stren crappie mono.

if you don't have to have high viz and like to use mono .
FOR sure Zebco el cheapo Omniflex is really good clear mono .
Trust me I have used about every mono out there and its bad to the bone in the 6 lb version .
Very low memory and VERY strong and highly abrasion resistant and NO they don't pay me or give me anything to post this .
it is for sure the budget minded persons Cadillac when it comes to mono
I break off many fish just on my hook sets with most of the other brands of mono all to frequently .
Because no one alive sets the hook as hard as I do on crappie and that's also a fact …. just saying :Rofl
I use Stren 6# for trolling and jigging. I use 2 and 4# for casting, I like the Vicious for this, in yellow. I am testing the Kast King Copoly now, it seems fine!
I have been using Stren for years. No complaints from me about it.

Gamma panfish Hi vis for pulling crankbaits and vertical fishing. Gamma edge for casting. I used Suffix hi vis for several years.
Personally I think 6 pound Berkeley vanish fluorocarbon is the best for crappie fishing. Any small diameter monofilament fishing line will work decent though.
check out reaction tackle.com very good mono i have been using for a while 2000 yds for around 10 bucks a spool i just got 2 in hi vis green.
Also Gamma, Polyflex clear 4# and 4# ESP Ice for finer diameter and for 1/48 and 1/64 jig heads and in colder water for the increased softness. Normal open water 4# Polyflex works just fine with 1/32 which is my standard jig weight. These lines have landed game fish as big as 38 and 40"muskies, high 20's walleyes, largemouths to 22" and 23", pike to 32". the only failures have been particular huge carp that just plain took off for the next county and never stopped and pike family cutoffs.Quote:

4# solar fireline braid for the last 25 years. Fluorocarbon leader for gills and red ear and straight ( no leader ) for crappie. Vertical and casting presentations.

Saltwater Angler from Bass Pro 8 lb on the jig pole and 6 lb on the pulling poles. 3000 yds is around 8 bucks
2 lb Stren Crappie Gold. Easy to see for tying and casts very well on my stream. Priced decently. I also have 3 lb sunline Wild Trout hi viz which is also a very nice line. I haven’t made up my mind if it’s worth the extra cost.

I've been using SOS 2# on a couple of rods. I'ts kind of hard to see for me sometimes depending on light conditions. It would be nice in a hi vis color.
CDC member ultraslab gave me some K9 Fishing hi-viz flourocarbon in 4 lb test to try, and I have to agree, it is fantastic stuff. I can see it to see thumps, and to tie it, and it is fairly manageable. It is all I use for everything, except for very UL applications. Strong enough to straighten a litewire hook jig on a snag, and cheap enough to use all the time. I've caught some very big "surprise fish" with it, including my PB largemouth (est 9-10 lbs) and spotted bass (5.1 lb).
Stren 4 and 6 get the job done for me. Clear for gills and hi vis for crappie.
I've switched to Izorline. A good copolymer fishing line and won't break the bank
