Calm Lake Conroe Morning

Went to Conroe and managed to land 11 crappie with 10 being over 11" up to 13". I never caught one throw back. Used smallest jigs available 1/16 oz with a 1.5" to 2" plastic bait with crappie nibbles. They did not want to hit the jig unless it had the sweet taste of the nibbles. The wind was calm 1-4 mph and it was cool with the aftermath of the North winds.
I got to a spot before sun up and set my rods waiting for the sun up bite and then I looked at one of my rods out and saw this snake. Thinking it was the non venomous snake that looked like a coral snake I used my net and scared it back in the water. Just barely touched it's tail and it jumped off into the water. Thank God I didn't have a bite on that rod and saw it before I grabbed my rod. I checked it when I got home and sure enough it was a coral snake! Lucky me!

Red touching yellow will kill a fellow. He could have had the yak.

Uuummmm..... I'll bet you were fully awake then..... nice catches..... Conroe is a great crappie lake.....

My biggest fear, a snake in my yak with me......:yikes

Dang, dang, dang. That snake on that rod in my yak, yep, he coulda just kept the yak! :yikes

Odd place for a coral snake but then they generally can go where they want to. Good catching!

I was a lucky man because if that rod had a hit on it I would have grabbed it where the snakes head was to set the hook and I would have been bitten. Since I got there at dark and set my rods up waiting for the early morning bite the snake must have crawled up the side if the kayak or the rope and went up the rod holder. I was messing with my other rods and just happen to look down at my rod before I was going to check it to see if it needed more nibbles.
I am going out and buying lottery tickets this week!
Conroe is a great lake for crappie and right now they are not biting that well around the 1097 bridge area and deep brush piles scattered around the main lake area where it is deeper. They are hitting better on the north end of the lake in water up to 20' deep.

Good catches, but when I saw the snake, I would have gotten in the truck, left the boat rods etc there. I have no problems telling people, but I will run over women and children, while screaming like a little girl to get away from ANY snake. I do not do snakes.

So how do you know nibbles are sweet?
Got into a row boat once with a moccasin in it. On a little lake near Hockley. I knew there was a snake in the boat, but, I didn't know what the heck else was in the water. I paddled back to shore and left rod reel and minnows to the snake. Figured all he wanted was the minnows.

Back years ago, in school, we had a few snakes in glass herp tanks as I went to an agriculture school in College Station. In one enclosure we had a moccasin and named him Idi Amin. We also had a king snake in an enclosure and had named him King Tut. We, very studious and industrious students ,wanted to see what would happen if we introduced Idi to King Tut. Idi was eaten in less than an hour, even though Idi was a few inches larger than King Tut.

king snakes are just that ….but to be sure I would love to see a coral go up against one , both eat snakes and I bet it would be a pretty good mma snake fight .
and if memory serves me correctly I think kings are immune to viper venom , but I aint sure on the neurotoxin in coral venom ?
I might have to research this some , now you got me wondering ...rotfl
on a side note I mentioned before about texas coral snakes and the fact they are the most aggressive of coral snakes in the us .
and they quit making the antivenom around 2010 so yawl pay attention close to them and stay away if you can .

Most definitely a snake you don't want to mess with! As a youth my neighbor and I had a snake collection and if my memory serves me we had about 32 snakes. We had all kinds of snakes including a coral snake and a water moccasin that was about as mean and nasty a snake as we had.

Oh almost forgot, they all we living and in cages.

a true cottonmouth is typically a real bad attitude character along with a western diamond back , both will strike in a moments notice if they feel cornered for sure . and just like people , some just have a personality that's looking for a fight as well .
I had a western diamond back spray venom out of its fangs at me one night when I grabbed it behind the head like a spitting cobra and that aint no joke .if you don't know your snakes best not fool around with them for sure .
and on a side note I aint never tried to handle a coral but I hear tell its really difficult to hold one behind the head . fyi

Ketchn,if I ever got bitten by a snake you can bet your bottom dollar won't be by handling it. That is a No No!

Very true Ketchn, all the snakes like the Coral which has no real diamond shape head like most venomous snakes, so there is not much to hold on to that he can't pull out of. So not a good snake to handle for sure! Our Cottonmouth and the Coral just stayed in their glass cages, but we did feed all out snakes. We even had a huge mud snake and we found a ditch full of ells we could feed him.

This is my Guess /opinion....That snake probably got in your boat at home or storage....Not coming out of water and climbing in boat...
There not generally water snakes..I've killed maybe 10 in my yard in last 40y and there aint no water within a mile except household water and rain ...Neighbor killed one next to his patio a month or so ago..and guy up the street 3 houses killed one also this summer

I got 2 under /around my storage building seen them a couple times this spring/summer ones a big 2f+...But never when I got a shovel in hand...and yes they Coral Snakes!!!!

I keep both Eyes OPEN when I around that area I Round UP ed all around building this morn...no snake bites but a couple Yeller Jacks got me...

Ever seen the "inside" of a bare kayak? Nothing for a snake to hide in/under. I always garage store my rig and there are no coral snakes in my area. I always "load" my kayak from my car and go fishing. Nothing could "ride along" or hide when I am in a small open area 34" X 60". I was fishing next to bridge pylons as you can see in the photos and I was there for some time. I even got out of my kayak two or three times to stand on the concrete of pylons. That was in the dark but I was using bright lights to bring in bait and could see everywhere. It was only at daybreak I was sitting relaxing and checking my text messages and looked up and saw the snake. I was about 25 feet from bank. If it was not on the concrete or in my kayak it had to swim a bit to get to my kayak. I have anchor lines on the side and the rod holder was right there for him to crawl up. I was just lucky! And if you ask me, yes coral snakes can be found in the water so be careful.
