Jighead paint
Anybody paint there own jigheads. If so what kind of paint do use. I'm thinking about starting to make my own. So many of these jigheads the paint chips off so easy anymore or there is more paint in the eye of the hook than on the jig.
Thanks for any info!

Home made fluid bed, powder paint, heat gun and 2nd hand toaster oven will allow you to make a zillion of your own painted heads. I agree protecc is good, I use it myself but for black, white red or yellow you can get a whole lot more paint for the money if you buy it at harbor freight.

Yep pro tec. Paint eyes with a Q tip and finger nail polish.
-
I use fingernail polish and then top coat with Sally Hanson hard as nails. Probably not for doing large batches at a time unless your very patient.
-
Pro Tec powder for most colors is top notch. Harbor Freight has huge low-priced containers of decent quality powder paint in white, black, red and an orangish yellow.

I use Pro Tech paint and I glue on 3D eyes. Both work great for me.

I’m thinking Harbor Freight is just carrying black and white now. Heard someone else say this and last I looked that’s all available at my local store as well.

I agree with above posts, powder paint, a fluid bed, heat gun then a toaster oven at 325* to 350* for 10 to 15 minutes. Don't use your wives toaster oven either...Harbor freight powder paint comes in 1 lb containers, others usually 2 oz by volume containers. Most lure building supply houses carry powder paint. I even know of folks using sample size bottles of automotive powder paint though it might be more expensive. Hope this helped. oh yea, check the sticky's out in the Jig painting and pouring threads sub forum under Jig Tying/ Lure Making/ DIY Forum, ifish posted a thread on powder paint cure times and temps...Helped me from melting lead heads when I started.

Check out SK's Crappie Fishing Adventures youtube videos on jig painting/tying. He shows you how to make your own fluid bed and how to tie jigs. Good videos.
-
BTW, Grainger has the 4" unthreaded spigot plugs you need for the base of your fluid beds.

A "fluid bed" is a nice little contraption that allows air to be pushed through powder paint making it like a "fluid". Makes for even coverage of paint. It's fast and easy. Check out SK's youtube vid on painting jigs and how to build one.

This is gonna be my first attempt using enamel paint. I was checking powder coat paint before but it is quite a step and equipments. I know powder coat would last longer but this will be use as my casting jig and occasionally hopping on the bottom so I hope it would last me long enough.
-
Fingernail polish works better then the enamel paint set. No base coat, cheaper and less clean up.

Thanks for all the feedback ! Glad I found this site. You guys are great ! I took long trip to Idaho had no cell service in the mountains. I sure missed keeping up on everything on here. Sure do learn alot.

dollar tree with the big glitter is good and I like the bright orange and the hot pink .
a jigs life span isn't terribly long and to create a work of art and lose it first drop is a bit disheartening
I tried powder painting some and thought it isn't any faster or easier for me and again I say this about that
nail polish :Rofl

Honestly I am all about Revlon nail polish from Wally World and then hard as nails over it. maybe glitter if I feel fancy, but I gave up on that. Seriously, I am trying g to catch fish, not fishermen and the fish don't care as they have only a few seconds to see the jig anyway. No heat gun or oven.
I spend the money on Crystal Flash and tinsel, rabbit strips and rubber legs. The fish is just going to notice the head's color, the rest is the action of the body. YMMV.

I’ve bought fingernail polish at dollar store, Walmart and Five Below. Five Below has some really cool metallic and funky colors for cheap if your looking for something besides plain color. Tons of choices in fingernail polish but pay no attention to the look people give you when you shop and buy it.....lol.

It gets worse. As I get older my nails have gotten softer, to the point where I can tear a nail opening a soda can. Finally it occurred to me, gee, maybe I should try this hard as nails for something more than jig and fly tying. Darned if it doesn't work. I have yet to paint my nails chartreuse though.

Wife bought this stuff couple weeks ago to help with chipping and cracking nails might be worth checking into. It’s called keratin and sold at Walmart. :dono
