Pushing Crankbaits

This is going to be new to me, I may make a mistake so help me. I usually pull with 6 poles now I want to get 2 more baits in the water by adding 2 more poles. My set up is 2- 6' out the back 2- 7' poles on an angle then 2-10' poles at 90* out the side of the boat. The 2 I want to add will be forward the 10 ftr, 2 more 6' poles and I want to add a weight "like pushing" to keep the bait close to the boat. My question is how much weight and line to put out say I wanted to keep the bait around 12'. My average speed is 1.5 to 1.8 mph. I will be pulling C55s, C33s, Arkies, Bandits and Picos about 3-4' behind the weight. I sure appreciate any help, Thanks in advance.

What G said. Sometimes with smaller cranks I will use a 2 oz weight buddy.

With the closest rods being long lined, you can experiment some and not get into the other lines. I used 1 1/2 oz and a 5’ leader and a shorter rod like you spoke of. I used some stiffer rods for a while but found a little bit softer action stopped a lot of the head shake releases I got on the stiffer rods. I used 10 lb clear mono for the leader and weaker split rings on the hooks of the cranks that let the hooks pull free and the crank stay connected.

If I'm understanding you correctly that you want to put 6' rods directly in front of the 10' rods on the side rails then the weights aren't going to do you any good, your looking for a recipe for disaster. It would work if you pushed them off the bow of the boat directly in front, although 6 footers awful short for pushing. If your wanting to add two more rods to pull 6 off the side and two off the stern my suggestion would be to buy two 14' rods. Again, I may have misunderstood you, but you don't want shorter rods in front of longer rods with or without a weight. :twocents

If it was me I’d put my 2 6ft down rods right out the back pointed straight back, next 2 at slight angle with longer lines out then the other 4 just like your running them. Just move your existing set up one notch forward. Like Snubby said your setting yourself up for a disaster putting short rods forward like that. Run your 3 oz weights with the chart G posted. That way they are behind motor.

After rethinking my rod set this is the way to go. I can now see how a short rod in front of a long rod even with a weight would get tangled easily. Thanks Cray.

I will be doing more charts. It is a 2 man operation and I am only bout 1/2 man now. Well, maby 3/4 man. Just got some more new parts installed.

Ok guys here is the results, caught about 50 kept 21 over 12". The problem I incountered was plenty bites with no hook ups, 10-12' of line out 2oz weight and a 4' leader at 1.5 mph. The pole would bend real good on the bite then the fish would get off. I even loosened the drag so it would just hold in place. I need some more suggestions so I can make this work better. Here is a box shot.

I pull with weighted lines. The poles don’t bounce like when pushing. If I have a good hookup, the fish will surface and ski behind the boat. I can make tight turns when pulling with weight too.

Tom, I don't know as Pushing in waves & bouncing rods has much of an effect on cranks, as it might on jigs. I don't think the rising/falling weights would change the depth of the crank to any great degree. Now, of course, I'm not talking 3-5ft roller waves like you might get down on your waters. But, even so, the rising/falling of the front of the boat (and subsequently the rods pointing out the front) wouldn't "raise" the weights as much as actually "pull the weights forward" then drop them down some ... wouldn't it ??

But, yeah ... you have the cranks/weights coming out the back of the boat & it's gonna take a pretty good roller wave to lift the back of the boat & change the depth of the crank.

3 - 4 feet. No detectable depth difference in bait depth. I am not a consistent tier of lines. Almost or close is fine with me.
