Water problems

Not only has the rain been a big problem, I came home yesterday to a basement with 4” of water in it. Sump pump failed on us!

Quick call to my insurance lady and I began the pumping and drying out process. Luckily I spent 6 agonizing months working for a company that did this kind of service.

I got the pumps going then Judy and I began tearing up carpet/laminate flooring throwing out damaged items etc., waiting on a dumpster so everything is being put out on the concrete approach until one becomes available.

With how often they run there is never an indication of when they fail. And they always fail when needed. I now understand why people have two. One with a low float, and a backup with a high float just for when the main fails.

That really sucks Steve. Holler if I can help in any way. Rich is right about the backup pump.

I take care of a duplex for my mother and got a call from a renter last night at 9:30 saying the basement was flooded. Thinking the worst I grabbed my knee high boots. They had water out 3 feet from the walls and flowing towards a still working sump pump. Not a lat night emergency if you ask me but I did get to tell them to clean the junk out of the basement.

One of the great things about having a bunch of fishing friends is.....they are a support group.

What can I say, I'm a sucker for a damsel in distress. And Judy, too.:Rofl

Water issues continued:

Last Friday I noticed water around my washer. Not uncommon for that thing but it was enough to investigate. I will say that in the 2 years I've owned a front load washer, it has been the worst thing ever invented (right along with the lawn mower and car wash).

I removed the back and followed a hose with my hands. Inspection confirmed a wear mark in the hose. Of course, now I had to take the whole thing apart to find a part I had to order. Fast forward a week and I get the part. Not a moment too soon as I have no clean underwear or socks, and I have a geriatric dog that wets the bed.

I get it put together and start on laundry. I come back down to 20 gallons of water in the basement. How the heck? Of course, now I have to watch and see. I find out that the door is leaking (60 gallons later).

At this point, you have to take it all apart to get at the hinges to adjust, then put the face back on, then the door. In other words, it is trial and error and 30 minutes round trip to do it. I'm not about to test that theory again. Besides, I hate that washer and I do all the laundry.

I leave Abby to a mop and bucket (I was in the Marines so that is what we would use). On my way to town I called my dad. He recommended my shop vac (duh, I own two). A quick call to my neighbor to see if he had a dolly and to ask if he could get Abby all setup with the vac.

By the time I got back, 90% of the water was gone and the old washer was on the deck. Thanks to his teenage son and friend. I got the rest cleaned and the new one installed.

The next morning I go down to find 1 gallon of detergent on the floor. The bottle fell off the dryer and broke. Yes, a shop vac will clean it too.

Yesterday my wife says that no cold water is entering. The rubber stop in the valve is stck open but no water. I look up to notice I had installed secondary shut offs and, when the teenage boys removed the old washer and couldn't get cold water shut off at the box, they did the smart thing and shut off the valve above it. Crisis averted.

No, I didn't purchase another front load machine!

The last washing machine I bought, the one I have had for 20 years, is as bare bones as they came. Hot/cold or cold/cold, large or small load. The salesman says-how about this feature, no, how about that feature, no, what about this cool gizmo, again no. I say how about that one with the dent in the side and no features, I'll take it if you knock some $$$ off. 20 years later it still works fine and I've done nothing to it. Sometimes simplicity is best.

Washing machine?.....I’ve had the same one for 40 years this October and don’t see a need for a new one....

Sorry to hear of the water troubles, I would offer to come help but I’m stuck in south Bend working , I worked at this ladies house and she had 4 sump pumps to keep her basement dry

Steve, just a small suggestion for a southerner who has been through several flood. Be sure to spray any would that was wet that is not being replaced with a mold spray. We treated my daughters house with a spray from Home Depot after stripping the walls to 48.5 inches. During that flood event 3 years ago over 150,000 homes and business were effected. You could not rebuild until it was determined that it was treated for mold. Anyway the stuff was fairly cheap and really worked good. Comes in spray bottles.

Basement is drying out, bought a dehumidifier last night and it filled up in a short time (110 pint size)
I cut out the drywall so everything can dry out framing wise. That’s the good news....

Bad news is we are not covered as fully as we thought. We have a 5K ceiling for repairs, contents etc.

So we will do what we can, if we have to put epoxy paint on the floors instead of carpet and laminate so be it.

My laptop is fried so no more YouTube videos. Couch and chair passed down from my grandma is probably ruined, some ammo and reloading components are likely not gonna work and some pictures are in the trash..... but it’s all replaceable (well not the antique furniture) life goes on and you roll with it.

You think that is bad, wait until you see that guy working with a soldering iron.........

Just a quick update, getting things dried out.....borrowed a dehumidifier from Erin as well as the one we bought....surprises me how much water we are getting out of those two units. Also got my laptop problem remedied and bought a new battery....the old cord was the problem. So now I am able to make youTube videos again (and you thought you were all safe :Rofl)

Hauled the first (wet) load to Grainger....thanks Sparty. Now we will start putting in the couches, chairs etc and get rid of them. Anybody need a home fitness center? I got one to give away nothing wrong with it.....just dont use it.

Bought some new windmover fans, just cause. :dono

Good to hear things are under way, stopped by your buddies house shortly after you left and had mentioned he got your pc fixed,that must of been some relief
