A Good Morning For Gills
Another week of afternoon obstacles, mainly Mother Nature’s fault with wind and rains here in E TN. The one evening I could go and the weather was halfway decent I had to take care of the yard chores. Oh well, this morning the Old Girl gave us a break and I cut a trail to the lake so fast it would make a fish swimmy headed. Greeted by a slight but steady West wind I probed several known beds with little to no luck, so just continued on my usual Milk Run until I stuck a nice male and the fight was on.

Today’s lure of choice was a Bead Head jig 1/24oz tipped with a Berkeley Power Wax Worm. This combination was deadly, and cast like a little bullet on the Corto with the Ester line.

I did throw the Trout Magnet some but the fish seemed to be a little deeper so the added weight kept my bait in their faces a bit longer. Anyway, a pattern started to emerge, and the total fish count was well over 50 before long, with the majority of the quarry about average/medium size. Always fun to hear the drag squeal. Good keepers were scattered, even found some in hiding in the shade of deeper docks, bushes, and steep bluff faces.

The sun was getting brutal and the lake lice were crawling out from the wood work, it was time to go. I brought a couple dozen of the better ones home and released the rest.

Girth and length of today’s keepers was average for public waters in E TN, and perfect size for the plate.

Congrats on your catch.....pretty fish. With that fluoride coating on ester it does cast a long way. Was hoping to get one more trip in before my surgery but with the weather it’s not looking so. So keep the posts and pics coming.....need something to keep me going....LOL.

A very good morning with those numbers. A good bunch of fillets for sure. I used my fly rod this morning with a bead head nymph looking #10 or so, black with some rabbit hair I think. I didn’t tie it but the fish liked it. Gotta try a maggot or waxie next time out. Thanks for educating me on what you use, that helped. Now go back out and get some more.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I woke up this morning to a phone call from my in laws. Seems like a downburst/tornado came over their place in the middle of the night and knocked down/ twisted off 3 trees in their yard, one falling on the house. I spent the day on the business end of a Stihl chainsaw clearing brush and limbs off the house while my tree guy climbed and cut the hard parts. Attachment 347373

No one was hurt but man am I beat. Power was just restored and we all will sleep good tonight. On the up side, plenty of Hickory and Oak firewood for next winter.

Goodness! That’s terrible Stan... glad no one was hurt... the storms have been bad lately for sure... glad you got some fish though!

Bad deal there Stan, glad no one was hurt. You guys have gotten some bad weather this year. Hope it gets better soon. It’s a shame you couldn’t get that hickory to a sawmill, very pretty stuff.
