Thinking about getting my first UL setup. Something small. I've considered a Dock Demon or something similar in size. What does everybody use for UL??

Shakespeare Micro light series, 7 ft. Can find at Wal-mart for 16-18 bucks.

There are a thousand better options.
My UL choices would be a 5'6" or 6' ESP UL -- or possibly a Berkley Cherrywood.
I seldom use UL's anymore, but have two "microlite" rods (6'6" Mitchell Zero Gravity carbon rods) that I could always bring into play if I took the notion.
That's why I'm asking! I'm ignorant on the ultra light game!

Preferably $25. I know it's not much but saw some for that or less. Its just going to be for small panfish.

I just looked them up online. I was thinking more the 4'6" version but looks like a good candidate. You all have used them?

I have a 7' B&M Wally Marshall Signature Series that is really sensitive and a great rod...but around $50. The Shakespear Micro Lites are not bad for $20. I have had the 4'6" and 7' and prefer the 7' but would like to try something in between, say a 6' or 6'6."
I bought this one a couple weeks ago, and had a blast with some good bluegills last weekend.

Have a 7' Micro lite with the Avocet for a "guest rod". Easy to cast - will land big fish. Great combo for the money.
Okuma Celilo , rod and reel combo . $35.00
Okuma is good quality so that's good to know. I guess I always thought ultra light equaled shorter rods. I didnt know people had 7' rods for ultra light. Besides getting a farther reach while vertical jigging what are the advantages of a longer rod?

my favorite ultra is a 7 foot one pc. Tica they no longer make . I have a 6 footer just like it and love them dearly .
but it seems to me in many cases its about what do you want to spend and whats your objective with the lighter tackle .
I love a real strong arch on my rod and a fast tip and want to feel the fish . others want to really fight fish and go with softer set ups .
some go quite the opposite and want to wrangle them in .
my Berkley Cherrywood is stiffer by far than my Tica and so is my Shakespeare ,but I have other rods that are much softer than my Tica as well .
I have a duck commander BnM that's a wet noddle of an ultralite and a bream will wear you down on it .
The Tica Trout rod in 6.6' is a great rod, I carry a 5.5 and a 6.6". The Cherry wood is a good option.
I like the 6' length but like a 4-6" if fishing inside a dock. All brands of rods will catch crappie pick the one that fits your budget. Use 4 to 6# high-vis line.
I have a 4'6" and a 5' Shakespeare micro series...both are good for what they are. The 5' is my go to kayak jig rod..
I have dozens of Reels and Rods donated to me for Crappie Kids.. several are UL rods and reels that I put together as Combos and give to children -- they choose the rod they want. Bass Pro has a 4 1/2 ft Tinylite rod with the Black foam type handle -- this rod could be a good small Dock Shooter -- it has promise that it could land a good size Bass with a reel with a smooth drag

I want an UL for small panfish. To catch them for bait. Bluegill and even tiny crappie. I want the sensitivity to be really good. Then have atleast a little challenge reeling them in.

The micro lites are pretty sensitive for the money and nice rods.
Ah didn't realize that's what you're paying for with a more expensive rod.

I was curious about that too. If they were stronger or more rugged. But if they break just as easy I'll stick with a cheapy!

Most I've spent was $80 for a Lews American Hero baitcaster combo. I use it for bass but I've caught quite a few crappie on it!! Its so much lighter than my 2 Diawa combos.
But yeah $25 is about as much as I want to spend on an UL.

If you got Amazon prime you can get a 6'6 Shakespeare micro series rod for $22.53... I love them.

[emoji106]on the Shakespeare micro series rods, I have several in different lengths and ratings. Wally's don't stock all of them and I special ordered some 7.6" ultralights rated 2 - 6 lb.

I have owned all sizes of the Shakespeare micro series rods but the 7’6”. The best I found, for the way I fish, is the 6’ and 6’6” for casting. I shoot docks with them, pitch jig and float, and pitch jigs, all very well. I use the 7’ , I have two, for trolling and find the a little ungainly for close quarters. I also am not gentle with them and have not broken any of them on fish, only on abuse. I have broken every cherrywood I ever owned. A 6’ micro and a 1000 series Quantum Optix would be a great combo for under $40 with the 6’6” rod coming in a close second. 4lb line and you’ll cast a 1/32 jig farther than you ever dreamed.
